C20NE Daily to C25XE Trackdaytool
« on: December 15, 2014, 23:52:26 PM »
hi,

After following some projects here, it's time to start my own project page!
Some little information about myself, I'm Dave, living in the Netherlands (so I'm sorry for my bad English sometimes  :P), 20 years old now, and own 2 Calibra's at the moment.
Story's about a 1992 Calibra with a C20NE engine, I bought it in 2011, But it had a lot of rust, so I decided a year later to rebuild the car again. Does anyone know the best possible way to put pics in here? Will be updated soon!

Use Photobucket, link below for you.

Why are you using a C25 for a track day car?? The NE would be better IMO, the V6 is a cruiser and bloody heavy.

Welcome to the site :)

A standard V6 is indeed a bit lazy as Alz says, but a lighter flywheel and a close ratio gearbox will change that!

The reason that i chose a c25xe is because i've always wanted a v6 calibra. I'm a big v6 fan. When i was 17, my dad doesn't liked the idea that a v6 was my "first" car. His reason was that i needed to learn drive first before i purchase a v6 calibra. But when i picked up my c20ne calibra, i've done to much to sell it and buy a v6, so i decided to build one. But not as daily, but something special, that's why the idea streetlegal trackdaytool came from. But in the netherlands you have "apk", that's a sort of yearly check if your car is safe. But you have to equip same engine as om your car papers, so when the v6 is in the car, i have to go to the Rdw, so they can check if the build is safe (think about good replaced engine, brake upgrade etc etc) then they replace my old 4 cylinder papers for a v6, and then it's streetlegal
When i'm home tonight i'll place some picture's of the outside restauration i did 2 years ago

Nobody is complaining about the V6 engine, it's quite good. The problem is the gear ratios and flywheel weight, this spoils the performance. That's all!

Look forward to seeing this happen!

Hi Davebatenburg, if you have 2.5V6, go for 3.0 V6, all bits you need are on 2.5 and with 3.0 you go for 200 or more bhp :-)

The begin of the story;
Bought it like this in 2011;

After some mods, changed it to this;

And did my first carshow ever at age 17, It called Sevenum

and that was also the first time my car didn't start, after some searching it was the crankshaftsensor.

The following year I get my license, and drove the car for a year as daily.
Then decided to get a full restoration and respray, because the rust also hits my calibra :(

Picture's say more then words, afterwards I think I made to less picture's...

aaand the other side

Then suddenly after some days, it became this;

Then he's ready for some original paint, spectral blue!

and the rebuild :)

Then time for the ''APK'', the dutch road inspection

Drive with the car after this 3 months, then it became colder and winter, and decided it's time for the inner side and a bigger engine, a v6

Some latest pics when the car is complete ;D

Then it's time to get some parts, so I bought another calibra, with a v6 in it.

Meanwhile I bought a golf MK3 GTI as new daily (yes a vw :-[)

There they are, waiting together

Updated soon, stay tuned! ;D

Next; Engines out!

First one is out  ;D

Now time for the cables

And done, engineroom is empty now :)

As you can see, it's a bit rusty in here to :'(

now the other one, First we tested the compression so we know something about the engine, pressure was between 14-15 BAR, so that's not bad.

oops empty room in here :)

and here's our little friend!

serious weight saving haven't my priority, but my complete interior is stripped out, only a rollcage and bucket seats come back inside. So indirect I saved some weight, but think the car still is al little bit heavy. But the car must be also usable to drive from point A to point B

Another new update from my side to tell you another part of my restauration. After the engine's, I decided to get my complete interior out of my car, so Maurice came that day, and we strip the complete interior out.

It's a little but rusty inside, way more worse than I thought. But to end that day at a positive way, I try to fit my rollcage, and it fits :D

strange places for that amount of rust  ??? nice work on the repairs.

you've saved quite a bit of weight this way, probably more than on my car.. just don't forget that the front end is top heavy now with the v6 lumb.
for a car that already suffers from a lot of understeer this can/will be a problem at the track

what kind of gearbox are you running? if it is the f25 or even a f28 maybe you can consider to go for a much lighter close ratio f18 or f20 box with a lightweight flywheel.
also a good idea to get the battery and washer fluid to the rear to shift some weight.

and the abs pump is quite heavy, probably a good idea to remove this and get a fixt system with a 70/30 or a 60/40 split depending on your brakes..
this really stiffens up the brakes and for good feeling on the brakes you don't want the abs working at the track anyway  ;)

Drakos, Battery is removed to the rear, but want to tell the story exactly as it was, but car is way further now (as the story :P )
Sealeysonic, the idea after this is that in the Netherlands you see many calibra's as showcar with a LET engine or XE. My car must be fast on track, but a good concurrent for the other calibra's on the shows here. But also usable as a daily. So I have to put different styles together :D

2 months long almost every evening after work I was working on the rust because not only interior was rusty, but also engine room;

and inside :D

After that set it in the epoxy, a sort of anti rust coating (They use it very much on very expensive restorations here, like Porsche's etc.)

After that Decided after that it's time to get an expert on it. So I decided to get a good friend who also make's my full RVS exhaust system, on the job. So transported the car to his place;

and some pics working on it there;

Rust is away, now time to get it back together! :D\

My friend niels @work

While he's doing his job, I build meanwhile the V6 Engine at home, so that's next!

First need to get the engine in parts

Meanwhile I get the cables out

and the engine at that moment;

now restoration of the cylinder heads;

Ordered some X30XE G-CAMS from Ebay Germany

Then bring away the cylinder heads for some new valve seals, max levelling (not sure if it is the right translation, but in dutch; maximaal vlakken :-[ )

then I cleaned the pistons;

Painted the engine;

no idea why, but love this pic;

Next time more engine stuff  8)

meanwhile I build the engine, Niels was ready with the bodywork. No more talking, just picture's!  :-*

Some thing Niels did for me;
- removed all the rust in engine bay and interior
- anti rust treatment for welded parts
- Fitted and mounted the Roll-Cage
- Homemade rear strut brace

Now is the car back at the painter, so I could back to work (do most of it myself)

As you see, also removed the battery, he comes somewhere in the car

Removed trunk because of rust;

Main reason for all the rust on my floor and other strange places inside;

Meanwhile I bought some new wheels and some tires;

painted my new wheels;
 OZ Superturismo 7Jx17 inch with Federal R595RS-R 225/45/17 Semi slicks

Hope they fit my dark blue car well :)

At my local Garage box in town I stripped my donor Cali for the cables (the v6 comes out this car to;

And give a sneak preview about my new daily car, more about this later :-X;

Sun shining in the Netherlands, and u got this;

Back at the painter, they painted some stuff of my car in basic colour;

And painted my engine room in the colour of the car;

And then arrived this;

and bought a pair bucket seats makes together this  8);

When I removed the sound absorb plates under the rear seat, Frank welded a custom chair frame for my bucket seats, more about that later (still not sure how we mount it). The bucket seats are higher than my original seats, so I came with my head to the roof..  >:(

1 side done;

and removed this plates to;

Done! ;D

found some new rust;

Not much, but also this is repaired soon

And my new daily, on wintermodus (normal 18inch OZ Superturismo)
Calibra 16V Ecotech DTM 1997, bought it with 132.000 in August 2014, now 141.000km's

Finally after 2 months searching found a old type sunroof, which is in good shape;

and the old one;

Because of the bad original painting underneath the double pieces, did some epoxy spray on it.

Last time old one;

VS New one;

paint it black :D

fitted;

look'in good!

Removed steering house from my v6 donor car (from projectcar was in bad condition)

cleaned it;

Paint it;

fit it;

Now that's done 2 8)

And last weekend I visit a mate, with also a amazing calibra with 3.2 V6 Signum engine conversion

Still work enough to do, but love the car

This was my last update from the past, at the moment there's not much more done as told here, so every little update posted from now :)

You heard a few weeks nothing from me, but I have still did some little things to the car (Was very busy with work)

First I had to unpackage the car; ;D

Then we did some work at the floor for my seats;

Then arrived my aerocatch, but aren't the good ones, these are ''underhood'', I want the normal ones

So send them back to motorsport-tools UK, and wait for the good ones ::)

Removed text, spoiler and rear wiper from my trunk;

And a little bit of white paint, rust prevention 8)

After fitting seats, found first problem, seat is 3cm to wide, so have to buy other ones :o

Also fitted my new hood (thanks Maurice when you ever read this :P)

Did some little things to my daily, Also fitted a 63,5MM Group A from FK-motorsport, but doesn't fit good :( Had to change some mounting points etc before it could under the car

Rear silencer hits the heat shield from the fuel tank, and the stabiliser from my rear axle..
also it comes to far behind the car, so after 2 days decided to get everything off and fit my old exhaust with new gaskets
Also removed rear bumper for repair.

aaaand done! 8)

New opdate coming sooooooon! :-*

After long time not posted anything here, it's time for a big new update!

Mounted Aerocatch;

After finished that, i had some problems with my daily calibra's suspension;

After finishing that, 2 days later my radiator broke, so had fixed that to.
Then i make my projectcar ready for the paintjob;

Give my car a floorcoating;

Finally painteddd!!!

i must see how my front bumper looks on the car :)

Get the car back home;

2 weeks later i had a day free from work, so i cleaned up my storage;
Before;

After:

Same evening did some work on the car;
New seats (other are to high and wide)

We had to make some costom frames, so this is how we make it;

Yesterday it was cable day, so here some pics all over the day;

and it's out;

In the projectcar;

Missing my dash to fitt it good, but that would be solved next week.

Tried Original rearlights and black rearlights, but think Original would be better, what do you think?

Your project is inspiring stuff & I love topics that have pictures revealing areas of the Calibra structure that are hard to find such as the stripped out interior or the front corner without the wing attached. It's often the case with cars of this age where things get broken by taking gambles because we cant see what's behind a panel or trim - now we can :)

Hello sealeysonic, the old driver said it was a dtm, with licensecheck is has also be a dtm, but haves no dtm badges. Anyway 100% sure you never know, but for me it doesnt matter enough to spend time to find it out.

Calibranath, i'd like to make picture's of my work, and try to post all the good pictures i'd make so the ones who want to follow my project seen every detail. But sometimes i forget it to, spend tomorrow a day time for underneath the car (try to update it this weekend)

Yesterday it was finally time to build in the engine. :D :D
So a mate was here 2 days to help with the engine.

First, cars out :)

Towed my projectcar to my garage at home, so we could there build in the engine.

After that, we build up the engine (last little things)

Build in my 5,5KG CourtenaySport/MTECH flywheel with Black Diamond stage2 Clutch

And together at my home :)

Put the engine in the middle under my engineroom, on a tyre.

Then the car down;

Then put the engine lift on it and tow it up;

And fit the engine on the car;

Done! suits well in my C20NE Body;  8)

And how the car looks outside now;

And then get them back in my own garage

Love the engine like this;

And this is probably the interior design, what do you guys think about it?

(steering wheel is temporary)

See ya!  8)

Hello,

Its a long time ago ive posted something, but some things are done after those 1,5 months.
Are very busy at the moment, so have not much time to spend on my car...

Just bought some brakes;

Paint it;

And i found a problem with my second belt, i have a car with airco, but a belt for cars without airco (wanted to remove the AC Pump)
But my shorter belt hits the engine mount, so need a new mount for cars without AC (and a V6)

Ordered new hand brake;

And these ones are in bad condition, so need other ones;

Try to fit my cooler from my donor calibra;

And tried my new wheels on the car if they fits;

It nearly fits with my federal RS-R Semi slicks in 225/45R17
Going wide on the back :)

Love that wheels!  :-*

Finally after a month searching found new ones;

And bought a Carbon spoiler from Rieger

(it has a protection folie on it at the moment)

Did the brake upgrade;
Original;

And new ones;

Includes; - 298MM Drilled brake discs from mathijssentechnics holland
- EBC Redstuff brake pads
- Omega 3.2 Girling callipers
- Wezmoto braided brake lines

and ordered a roose motorsport coolant kit;

Removed pins from aerocatch and slide them to the good size and mount headlights;

And a little project my dad is working on;

See u next time :)

love the wheel/tire combo.
also the hoses are a nice upgrade

not a big fan of the fake carbon spoiler, painted in the body color it wil be much nicer

for the engine mount.. the non ac are quite rare and mega expensive ( i've got one  8) ) but if you mount an extra roller on this mount you can do without ac
got a complete mount with extra roller/belt for sell if you are interested. just pm me on the opelforum

hello boys and girls,

I know it is 3 months ago you heard something from me, but i was very busy with anything except the calibra...
But did some little things last few weeks, did some cable work, fitted front bumper to see if it fits, bought a restorated rear axle and ordered a package of powerflex black series for the rear of the car.

If everything is going as i want, ive got some big interior upgrades before my vacation (end of august)

See ya :D

I know you all should have thought the project is stopped, but it isnt :)
After a long vacation we picked up the project a month ago.
A good friend of me is helping me to finish it, so i'm not alone anymore

A lot of pics to show u what we have done last month;

Bought a new car, a Green Calibra from 1996 with a V6 X25XE inside

Sold my old 1997 Iceland X20XEV

And ofcourse the projectcar;

We started with replace the rear axle, its finished at the moment but some pics;

Replaced the old handbrakeshoes for new ones;

Some EBC Discs;

While neil was doing the rear axle, i mounted the right engine mount, a new belt and the A/C Pump (not installed, but it wa required for the belt.

The car at that moment;

Old vs New;

Needed to paint some parts because we dont want to have 5 different colors on the car;

Coated rear axle, With new Powerflex Black series arm rubbers

Enough for today, will update soon as possible :)

Hi man. Would it be possible to make a run first and before map, just to understand wich might be the gain of your engine with mods done?
Thanx in advance.

I'm working (unfortunately too slow for my thoughts) on my x30xe with ported heads, Friederich motorsport exhaust manifold, custom inlet manifold (larger pipework and plenum) and I'm searching for the largest amount of informations related to GM V6 engines results down the net

hello,

it's been a while, but plans are totally changed. After some contact with speedequipment about the clutch, i have to drive 1000km 'normal' because of the stage2 black diamond clutch. so a remap or dynorun will be after that. Also i bought a Vortech V9F Supercharger, and want to fit that before the car goes away for the remap. (don't want to pay a couple of 100's for a remap, and get after 2 months another remap because the charger). But are there more calibra's here with a supercharger? Will update as soon as possible with some picture's :)

It's been i while i posted some pics, so here's a little update for you guys :)
Had a lot of problems with any kind of things, 9 out of 10 are solved now.

A friend make a full costom 2,5Inch exhaust with costom headers, packed with titanium heat wrap.

mounted costom rear bumper for last exhaust part, then i noticed i got some paint issues,

and ofcourse the clubcalibra stickers :) have to say love the color combination (blue/white)

Car back in my storage :)

Meanwhile i bought some parts, also a new costom made bumper;
fitted my front bumper for the intercooler/supercharger

another one of the exhaust;

get the exhaust underneath the car because of several leaks, so we had to fix that first;

enough for today, next update -> Interior! :)

Welded some plates for the sparco 4 point harnesses

Fitted the first seat with harnesses;

and second one;

MOMO steering wheel;

Meanwhile i bought some costom made coil-overs;

because i love this pic, engine from a other project :)

Coilovers fitted;

its been a while since i posted here, when i got some time i will get some pics how the car looks now. Its now full DTM stickered, and finally ''finished'' as i can say.

anyway got now the C25XE inside, but bought a while ago a Vortech supercharger which one gonna build on the v6.
But i'm busy now searching a F28 gearbox, And considering about a x30xe or y32se from an omega to replace the 2.5 before it get some boost :)
Anyone knows what stock internals can handle from both engines or have done this before? Hope to hear from u guys soon!

3.2 do have a steel crank where 2.5 and 3.0 have cast iron.If I were you I'd go
For a 3.2 engine if it's easy for you to find out.Better base plant for future madness engine modifications 😂

yes in that case its better to have a 3.2. also i thought that the compression ratio from the 3.2 is lower than a 3.0, but im not sure for that. in that case i can get some more boost on it, and higher hp :)

Right man. You loose only a few CR (10,8 for 3.0 and 10,1 for 3.2) wich isn't enough if you plan an high boosted engine. Wich is your goal? Wich will be car's useless? Track?Daily?

If you need an hi boosted engine you should use crank and steel rods from 3.2 with 3.0 block and use Z20LET pistons to lower CR enough to run on 1,0 bar over pressure. 3.0 use 86mm pistons wich are the same size of 2.0 and you might (not sure about this, check everything before to go on) have the same head desing from both ecotec generation engines (V6 and x/z engine series are all ecotec and IIRC 2.0 X20XEV/XER Z20LET/LEH... have same valves so I assume they have same valve angle and similar head spec).

This are my thoughts, I haven't any detail to be sure, I'm doing a simple brainstorming know how GM/Vaux/Opel had worked those years with engines engineering.
