Got a new cali for xmas

Went down my mums today as my brother wanted me to see me....

His noticed my DTM is looking sorry for herself, so he gave me his spare calibra so i could maybe this year get some work done on it. He didn't like it because its manual and also the knock censor died ( which he was nice enough to give me a replacement censor)...

Its totaly bog standard including the alloys and its got a red top lump and its not purple its dark grey, all i got to do is give her a wash, find where the knock censor is and swap it out and get her a new mot as it run out last month...

I need to get 2 bits which someone nicked off of her, a jack point cover and a rear bumper number plate light lens..
Also she doesn't have the volt or oil pressure guages so that may help me find out what series she is.

Yeah lammy my bro gave it to me, Alz i'm gonna give it a wash and clean change the knock sensor give it a once over and take it for a mot...

I'm in debate whether to use this permentely and sell the DTM as a project,

Plans for the red top, i don't know its bog standard even the rims, i'd probaly like to put a irmscher boot spoiler on her as calis without the boot spoiler look lost at the ass end.....

Something keeps telling me to leave her standard..... this is the first dark grey one i've ever seen and the first to have washer jets in the front bumper.

Definitely leave it more or less standard.  You could swap the wheels for some larger rims, but keep the originals so it can be restored to standard.  There's probably plenty that needs doing just to keep it tidy.  I wouldn't even bother with the spoiler, as that would make it non-standard for it's year (when was the Irmscher kit introduced?).  I used to like spoilers, but they're rather passe now.

The XE is the engine the Calibra should always have had. Dropping it in favour of the Ecotec was nothing short of criminal.

What colour is it? Looks like Magic Grey / paint code 144/86L.

If the back-end of the Calibra was notoriously prone to breaking out - like on the old Sierras*, or rear-engined Porches - increased downforce might justify the increased drag, but it isn't.  You are far more likely to get understeer in a fwd car, than oversteer.  (*that's why the higher-powered Sierra Cosworths and 2.8l 4x4s needed the 'double-picnic tables' on the boot-lid!)

Perhaps, but I don't think it met emission regulations introduced across Europe in 1993.  They had to fit EGR and de-tune the engine to meet the new regulations and to improve fuel economy.

Of course it did, the XE is in plenty of cars even today don't forget. The XEV was introduced to make them 'appear' more green for all the tree huggers.  Samr reason the cam cover's engine description changed on the V6's :) I mean why the hell else would anyone put 'Ecotec' on a V6 cam cover  ;D ;D Knobs.

The Ecotecs are positively toxic bombs compared to those new Ecoflex jobbies ::) ;D. Seriously though I think its all a load of bollocks. The xev was about 15bhp down on the redtop right(?) and both will still pass the same mot emissions test?! I blanked the egr valve on my Cougar and the mpg improved slightly. I might be talking through my arse but to me it doesnt make sense.

Nice car btw, very early as Alz says and I agree keep it as it is. Just wondering is that the original bonnet badge?

Sadly that is correct.

I've owned two C20XE's, one in Calibra form & the other in Cavalier form. I've also owned one X20XEV in Vectra form & driven several members Calibra X20XEV's.

The X20XEV isn't all doom & gloom but there really is no comparison in performance against the good old "Red Top"!

Dan, I'll be buggered if i can tell whether your agreeing with me or not lol, I know so close to Christmas your in Scrooge mode anyway ;D

In fairness to the Cougar I have removed the front and rear badges and replaced them with the original US spec Mercury ones so technically it isn't a F**d anymore :D 8)

They have different pass marks depending on when the car or engine was built. The pass level was tightened for cars built after Aug 96. Anything older & you can get a pass without a cat.
Manufacturers started to make their cars compliant with the new regs before they were introduced.

I think the XE could have been tweaked to make it compliant though.
I think it was replaced because the XEV was cheaper to build. They also paired the newer engine with a weaker gearbox. If cost was not a factor they would have left the F20 in there.

No, they have to meet different standards.

Anything built after Aug 96 (IIRC) has to meet a stricter limit than anything built before.

We had this discussion on the Lotus Elan forum. All S2's (mid 1994-late 1996) were fitted with cats but some owners removed them to gain about 10bhp & they still passed their MOTs. The last few (N reg's) failed.
We found that there was a cut-off & anything newer had to meet stricter limits so most manufacturers made sure their engines were compliant well before they were introduced.

The odd rule is that if you put an older engine in a newer car then the age of the engine, not the car, is used to determine which limit you have to meet.
This is a bit of a strange loophole so you would probably have to explain this at every MOT & get the tester to read their rule book.  ;D

leave her standard, the older callys should be left standard. And yes it does need a spoiler. Nice ride :)
