I think it's caused slightly more damage than can be seen, I'm having a break before continuing to fanny around getting them running again from another server.

It's never being turned on again, I've written the f*cker off (old piece of sh*t that they should've been replaced a while back).

It's done more than stop the drive working, there's 2 SATA drives there in a Raid 1 configuration so it should boot from the other if that metled wire had just powered down the one. Boots to BIOS fine but can't see the array so I think the controller is FUBAR'd!

Just lubricate the flange and fit the gasket dry ... if the flaps are OK they'll hold it in place.........

The flaps are all good. Sold them 2 new servers now anyhow, amazing how the loss of a days productivity suddenly gets customers to dig deep & replace the equipment we've been telling them for ages is a time bomb.

Our old phone system was the same. We told them for years that it was in danger of crashing. When it did, there was major panic.

It's totally, completely and entirely different because though it never goes well or to plan, you're rarely cold.

Direct to mains bypass?

Quite easy really, see it every day.

However, I really, REALLY wouldn't advise it.

No, not a copper. Many, many other jobs though.

Put it this way, when the police raid a cannabis farm, they ALWAYS check the electric meter for signs of tampering.

2 reasons:-

a, to confirm that it is safe to start "dismantling" the "farm",

b, Abstraction (theft) of Electricity is a serious offence- its added to the list of charges against the alleged offender.

In fact, in my experience, when attending a call nowadays, the police check the meter at most properties. An easy prosecution.

Tampering with the electric is easily spotted in most cases. Even very cleverly tampered meters and "direct to mains" connections can be identified with only a little common sense. If the officer is still not sure, they can always call for help to identify the problem if required. Then remedy or make safe.

Not necessarily. Seen it in big houses with swimming pools, saunas, etc. Commercial premises. Pubs, takeaways, etc.

Some folk do it because they have no money and are GENUINELY struggling. Can understand why they've done it though cannot condone it.

Some do it because they think they have no money to pay for gas and electric though they can afford (take your pick) the big LED TV, Sky TV, Ipods, IPads, Smart phones, Laptops, cars, fags, booze. designer clothes, etc, etc, etc. The list goes on.

Others do it because they think they shouldn't have to pay for it. They think they can get away with tampering the meter and not paying a correct bill.

For whatever reason, I'd bet that very few of those people who tamper with their gas and electric supply, give much thought to the possible consequences- fires, explosion, burns and electrocution, etc.

Whichever way you look at it, anybody who pays a genuine bill, pays towards the cost of the production/ supply deficit caused in part, by people fiddling their meters.

Its bad enough that we have to pay for line losses and leakage within the cost of the cost per kwh.

Then there's the cost of investigation and remedial action for tampered meters. Fair enough, people who get caught are usually made to reimburse the supplier for their unmetered usage as well as pay charges for the corrective work- usually in instalments. Some don't pay anything back though, various reasons.

Due to a multitude of various reasons, very few people are left "off supply" nowadays. Even when they are disconnected, there's the danger that they'll just reconnect unofficially- "Direct to mains". Quite common- tampering the disconnection.

Always fun digging the street up to cut the supply more emphatically and semi permanently.

Not many explosions, lots of electrical fires- most unreported in the media and even more burns.

Plenty of near misses.

I'll see if I can dig a few photos of burned and melted meters out.

Quite scary when you see them.

I like to bypass the meter from november to february. I do this as i refuse to be ripped off by the energy firms who just happen to increase their charges during this period when demand is high!!!    I sit their sweating with the thermostat on max and enjoy sticking 2 fingers up tp the GREEDY shareholders of these firms!!!  Join the revolution my friends.      ;)

oh right sorry not that revolution;)

it is disgusting how they hike the prices up, i know its capitalism and all but the cold weather payments the elderly get doesnt seem to cover the bill now, however my grandmother had a good line "im putting the heating on, who cares about the bill, i will be dead by then, and if not what are they going to do, put me in jail?"

i think cutting a pensioner off would also be a bad move, imagine the field day the press would have...

I remember reading about a guy who took his supply from a street light, apparently he'd been doing it for years.
was only spotted when a council worker noticed the different tarmac from the street light to the house! not sure how much power he would have got from it though!
I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandad,
