is it some form of sensor that over time has been dragging on the road, or against a drive shaft or summat and eventually worn away?

on the back of the wheel you should see a bracket, with a barrell hanging over the abs ring which looks like a cog - lots of teeth

From here, it runs up into the engine bay to some sort of module which is linked to the ABS ecu in the car

If it's not an ABS sensor connector (check in your wheel arches for them) it could be the connector for the oil sump level sensor, that looks very similar.

Were abouts in the bay is this hanging around mate?? Might give a better idea of were it use to be fitted

For example, is it hanging high up in the bay/ from a wheel arch area / from the underneath/
A broken abs sensor would prob explain why the 4x4 is out..

just had a better look. looks like some sort of temp sender? got 160degrees written on it. will put a pic up in a sec just uploading it.

probably lost all the oil too!

I'm sure the 4x4 would cut out ,if that sensor wasn't getting correct temp reading!

that is the temp sensor for the 4x4 tx box. If its not reading something correct then it wont allow the 4x4 to engage, also that is where you put the oil in for the box so i imagine you have lost a large majority of the oil.

i don't use that hole for checking the level no, not sure how to do that. Never had to check the level because you should only use the vauxhall oil, and that is only sold in 600ml bottles which is the correct amount.

look in workshop manual then look in TXB oil level checking!

in short dont remove the temp sensor.. but remove the bolt next to it (mounting bolt) yes vx do it by 0.6L but I use castrol TQ-D (castrol recomendation for the 4x4)
comes in 1L and I use the first 0.4 to flush the box a little befor filling the 0.6

If and when you do it you will need the car in the air to get to the drain and the level check plugs BUT the car MUST be level!!!! or it will effect the amount it fills to!!!

Like martin has said you need to remove the bust sensor from the transfer box by lifting the car to get access.
The sensor will either be a 19mm bolt if the car is an early turbo or a 13mm if the car is a later model..
In order to get the system working again you will need to fit a working sensor in place of the bust one as without a working sensor, the system will not come back on..
Once you have another sensor fitted in place then you remove the bolt next to it that is in the mount.( be warned the sensors are very easily snapped off when tightening up so be carefull)
Then you fill with the oil from the breather pipe that comes out of the top of the transfer bx and should be coming out up by the header tank.
( this must be done on level ground) This is done using a small funnel and is a slow proccess..
You stop filling the oil when the oil starts to flow out of the mount bolt hole..
Then you replace the bolt..
If you intend to get the 4x4 working again you will need a replacement sensor which can prove difficult if you have the earlier turbo model as they are not made anymore..
Thing is, once the earlier temp sensor fails it is ruined and cannot be re used so a 2nd hand one will have to come of a working 4x4 box..
The later sensor is a simple switch so a 2nd hand one can be used again..

thanks for the info. i haven't managed to get the sensor today they said its a main dealer thing. i think it was a 19mm to get it off. so may have to get a second hand one

when looking for the 2nd hand one, scrappies know them really well, just ask them for the de-bobbleator, they have em on a widespread variety of engines - i found out this morning

i think somebody changed the oil and snaped it off doing the bolt up next to it as it was glued back together.

if your struggling to get a part ring autovaux, they will post it to you, as its drivable now there isnt much of a prob. they can do next day delivery if they have them in stock, and if they dont they have always been able to source my stuff within 2 days max and are cheap, for stuff like this you will never really find one in a scrappys as they sell them with the box's normally and its rare if you do cos they normally sell the boxs with the engines. plus its better to buy stuff like this new, that way you got a warrenty if the things is keput.

here is there website with contact number etc, they can get turbo parts better then vauxhall main dealers can, dont ask me how they are like the magicians of c20let to me.
