Sunroof not closing
« on: June 18, 2017, 22:20:47 PM »
Hi,

I have looked at various threads and can't seem to find an issue the same as mine but they are all likely to be similar I guess.

So, I tried to open my sunroof, it got about half way, made a noise and then refused to go further.  I cannot now close it either, it got to the 1st stage closing and wouldn't then go further.

I notice the sunroof is not level anymore either and there appears to be play when I touch it i.e. it slides on one side.  The motor seems to want to work but its now just making a buzzing noise.

Any idea's?  roof lining out, remove sunroof cassette for a replacement or is there another fix?

Thanks

Mark

there are a few people on here who know about this kind of stuff regarding replacing them, unfortunately i am not one of them.  The sunroof uses a metal cable on each slide to open it and close it, a bit like a wire window mechanism.  It sounds like one of yours is broken, whether you can replace the cables i dont know.

I have the sunroof for sale from my car but firstly you need to work out which type of sunroof you have (i think some have one cog and some have two? somebody on here will know more), also mine for sale is orange.

My sunroof did something similar. I had it looked at and the "metal cable" mechanism referred to by tommygards was out of place and had to be cleaned, oiled and put back together again. Works fine now.

The motor worked but the roof didn't. Had a look and after the headliner was removed - to get at the sunroof - a bunch of screws fell out..!! Turns out these were to hold the motor in place. I guess after 20 years they had "unwound" themselves loose. Only one screw held the motor in place so it "wobbled" when in use and, I think, that caused stress to the sunroof mechanism causing it to stop working. Once they were screwed back in place, and the sunroof mechanism refurbished, the roof work fine now.
Drives: an original SE6 auto, 81,000 miles (approx) and still going strong......(but some work is needed!). Now my second car.

Hi  :)

Pain in the butt job but has to be sorted. If you need to close a stuck sunroof for security or before a replacement you can do this.........near the interior light you should see a grey plastic cap which you can prise off. Through the hole you will see  a hexagon shaped aperture. You need to insert the right sized hex key an turn the key which will move the sun roof manually Open or Closed.

There may be one in the glove box specially for this job but usually gets lost ::)

As members have suggested repaired can be made if you know how but the easiest way is to buy a compete sunroof from say Tommygaurds.

He said his is orange....but when you remove the underside sunroof panel headline you will expose bolts which will detach it from metal arms.

All you have to do is swap it with the one on your car.....it will just bolt on. After you have removed the headlining you disconnect the harness plug and remove the bolts holding the Sunroof and lift it clear of the car.

Drop in the replacement and reassemble......job done ;)

You would have to identify with tommygaurds wether yours is the same as his and "Bobs your Unkle "as they say.

Hope this is of help to you............this procedure is documented in the Haynes Calibra manual or ".....Lindsay Porters Cavalier Vectra Calibra manual."

Thanks for the advice.

I took the easier route and have dropped it off at a friends garage as I just don't have the time and looking at it, we found quite a few smaller jobs too.

Hopefully when it returns it'll all be sorted.

No major issues, one of the bolts had worked loose which then caused the misalignment.
