Hi guys,

Self inflicted this one grrr!! I was in the process of removing the steering wheel last night (to fix a horn problem) and tapping the central column with a hammer, whilst pulling on the steering wheel to remove it, when i suddenly heard a strange clicking noise. I stopped with the hammer and the noise stopped.

I didnt notice till this morning but all my dash guages are now dead (speedo, rev counter, fuel gauge, temp guage, voltmeter etc). Other things also now not working are the stereo, Traction Control light, Airbag light (had previously been on, and now isn't), handbrake light.

Everything else seems to be working...i think, car still drives fine etc. What the hell have I done lol !!!

I thought maybe a relay, but looking at the list HERE, I can't see any that control all the above. Also can't see any problems with the fuses in the interior fusebox.

The car just had its MOT retest today (after failing on Friday) and luckily the garage obviously only checked what it had failed on before (the handbrake) and didnt notice the problem, hence amazingly it passed lol!!!

Still, any ideas on what I might have done?

Have a look at the giant fuses in the black engine bay fuse box, next to the N/S strut top!

Just checked them, there's a 30A, 40A and 50A fuse there. Pulled them all out, and examined them, but they are all fine ???

Any other ideas?

Check behind the fuse panel, check wiring around ignition, check wiring behind the clocks.

It does sound odd. The only other thing that springs to mind is maybe you've disturbed a common earth for all those circuits? I know behind the dash and around the column there are several.

Surely if i've disturbed an earth though, it would have blown a fuse (or several) which i'd see?

Grr can't believe one tap from a hammer on the steering column has killed half my electrics lol !!!

Worst thing is I had to get the garage to remove the steering wheel in the end, as i couldnt get the bugger off. Took them 20 minutes too lol !!

Will have to have a look around tomorrow when its light.

Why was you hitting the steering column with a hammer ? there's no need, far easier to use a puller or hit underneath the wheel.

lol, unfortunately i didn't have access to a puller yesterday, and it was in for its MOT this morning. Also I couldn't see that there was enough room to hit from under the wheel with any real force.

It was actually the garage who suggested I try removing it using knees under the bottom half, pull hard on the top half, whilst tapping the steering column (with a bit of wood between) to loosen it off. Sounded good in principle but needless to say it didn't work.

They are a f*cker to get off. I've done quite a few now and found the best way is to grip the top half with your hands, bottom half with your knees and rock back and forth as hard as you can :D Sounds crazy but it works. A rubber mallet is good for shocking it loose too, just dont whack the airbag too hard.

If you did snap an earth, or pull it out... it wouldn't blow the fuse. Fuses blow when there's a surge of current, not when a circuit is broken.

Yeah i tried that method initially Chav, but i guess i was a bit reluctant to be too heavy handed in case i broke something.

...and low and behold, now I have lol!! Will have a good look around the length of the column tomorrow to see if i've broken anything, but i just dont see how i could have done by what i was doing ???

I'd say that it would be a fuse to be honest. That happened to me lights on the clock/speedo and main clock.

Just to clarify here, its not the illumination thats gone on the guages, its the actual guages themselves that are all dead.

They dont all run off a fuse as far as a i know. Do they even run off a relay? I'm not actually sure what single point of failure connects all the things that have failed. Unless there is a common earth as Chav suggested.

I'll have a look tomorrow when its light to see if I can see anything out of place, in the places suggested.

When I was having problems with a constantly blowing fuse caused by the faulty ciggie lighter, I lost my speedo, rev counter, ALL the gauges, stereo and horn as well as all the dashboard warning lights.

I replaced the fuse and all was well until I put the lighter in again. Same result.

I'd recheck the "in car" fuses again if I were you. You may have just shorted something accidentally as you were working- easily done. Especially with the amount of wiring and switches around the steering column.

If I remember correctly, though it was 6mths ago, it was either fuse 2 or 8 -blue 15A, not necessarily related to the ciggie lighter.

Just check them all again.
You've gotta grab life by the haunches and hump it into submission!!

I'd check fuse F2 on the main fuse box
