Rubber Seals - radio aerial and sunroof
« on: July 21, 2017, 13:20:30 PM »
Folks,

Does anyone know where I can get replacement seals for the aerial on the roof and for the sun roof itself?

Mine are looking a tad crispy and need to be replaced and no amount of vasaline will help. I can't seem to find any replacements: the spares department at my local Vauxhall just laughed. Is there a part from another car - Vauxhall, or other brand - that would fit?

It's the age old problem of a 21 year old car: the rubbers bits are close to perishing  :(
Drives: an original SE6 auto, 81,000 miles (approx) and still going strong......(but some work is needed!). Now my second car.

Thanks sealeysonic, but I think I'm almost past that. I did use some products but the rubbers are splitting and fraying. I think they need a change. I heard that the radio aerial seals from the VW Polo would fit.

It's about trying to find replacements.........jus t not necessarily Vauxhall units.

There's a VW aerial base that sort of fits but not sure if it's off a Polo. You need to boil it in hot water and stretch it over.

For the sunroof I can suggest 2 options;

The first involves a little DIY... 8mm x 5mm, 1.5mm PVC pinch weld or thereabouts and 2-3mm self adhesive felt strip. You can't rely on the self-adhesive to provide sufficient bond so you will need to experiment with epoxy. The adhesive layer on the felt provides a barrier so the epoxy doesn't bleed through the felt;

Otherwise you can look for a pinch weld w/. 90 deg D-mould in rubber;

The one I'm using is a little large TBH (it balloons when the sunroof is closed) even though it's been stretched to within an inch of it's life. I'm hoping that over time it wears a little and perhaps shrinks a tad.

Best wishes
