major loss of power and backfire

well as above sometimes it can run fine (ish) and then a complete loss of power, it will then backfire and lunge forward to full power then back to none then a bit of power so im getting 20mph ish then it will run fine for a short while with afew backfires now and then it seams to happen more at low revs  ???

Any fault codes ?  If you don't know then start here -

It could be the Coolant temp sensor or Maf sensor, do the paperclip test to see if any codes are stored.

thats tomorrow's job mate ,it just started tonight so im waiting till morning. im hoping its just a sensor my neighbor seams to think it could be a head gasket?

fault codes-

13 Oxygen/Lambda/O2 sensor No change in voltage/open circuit
39 Oxygen sensor Voltage high (rich mix detected)
48 Battery voltage Low voltage
31 Engine RPM signal (crankshaft sensor) No signal - engine not running (try reading codes with engine running)
 
ill try with the car running later but would any of them make the car run as described?

The lambda would I should think, or CTS. Why do a lot of people assume head gasket when little else has been checked??

I worked with a guy who was a right bullsh*tter, and he reckoned he knew loads about cars. His car (Zafira, i think) pulled severely to the right when he let go of the steering wheel, and he tried telling me that it was the spark plugs.
He also saw my Calibra and said "Oh is that the twin-turbo? I used to have a twin-turbo Calibra too".

I know a bloke who had got qualifications coming out of his ears, no common sense though. He had a phone or light can't remember which now that packed up, he dismantled it properly and I mean down to it's core components and it was a blown fuse :D

he works down at just tyres and has saxo that he has put bucket seats into!!!!!!!!

Seats can make a car feel quicker, next time you get in your car, tilt the back of the seat backwards but still sit up straight and then floor it! It will make your car feel like a dragster :D

it gets better it has 4 point harnesses a ripspeed flip out DVD and has "saxo" written in big letters down the side

If the plugs on the left were sparking better it could cause that...........NOT.

What a tool.

The CTS can be bought on ebay for a fiver so worth changing anyway, even if it's not the problem.
