Knock sensor wiring on c20let
« on: September 08, 2010, 20:12:05 PM »
Possibly the cause of my engine blowup, the knock sensor wires are snapped and mangled , it wouldnt have given an ecu light because the ecu light was always on due to immobiliser fault , it still ran ok...till it didnt anymore

Does anyone know how sensitive the ecu is to the wiring length / type / ( ive no idea about knock sensors ) , can i just cut it and add a new plug on the end, or just add an extention piece to make it longer or will it then give the wrong signal due to the joins in it?

In my days (a while back now!!) as a vauxhall tech we used to frequently rewire the knock sensor direct to the ECU, due to the wiring picking up interference from other circuits.  If you want to do it you need to run a new two core screened  (bit like the TV aerial) cable direct from the knock sensor to the ecu and bypass the multipin connector in the engine harness. The length of the cable doesnt really matter but make sure that the screen goes to earth, preferably at the ecu end of the cable run (there is an earth bolt near the ecu, drivers kick panel). I don't know the ecu pins it goes to off the top of my head but may be able to find out if needed. ;)

1) There are two types of C20LET loom, and two types of knock sensor.

Type 1 is a knock sensor with no wire built into it, just a plug. This is connected via a mini-loom that also plugs into your ICV
Type 2 is a knock sensor with a wire built in, this wire goes up and plugs into the main engine loom

If you have type 1 (a mini loom) you can just buy a new one off MIG (I just sold one :( )

2) The knock sensor has a specific torque, this is important so it can hear knock properly

Good luck

i have spares of both type of knock sensor that are all serviceable, i even have a genuine vauxhall one still in the box if you need to get hold of any.
