Help: Is it my gearbox, my clutch, or my linkage at fault?
« on: April 23, 2009, 17:08:59 PM »
Having increasing problems coming from the gearbox area on my V6.

Here's the symptoms:

* It crunches slightly if you put it into 3rd gear too quickly (done this for the last 18-24 months). If you put it into 3rd carefully it doesn't crunch.
* lately its started whining noticeably loudly in 3rd.
* even more lately 3rd gear sometimes, but not always makes a noise like metal scraping along the road.
* even more lately still, i'm sometimes having difficulty selecting 1st and 4th gears.

I had the gearbox oil level checked on a service about 6 weeks ago not long after it started whining, and was told it was ok (assuming they did actually check it)

So as per subject, Is it my gearbox, my clutch, or my linkage that is likely at fault. I fear its the gearbox, but just looking for input from the more knowledgeable members.

If its the gearbox, do you think it is fixable or is it likely to be a replacement gearbox job?

I was having a problem selecting reverse, it was crunching every time, so i followed the gear linkage guide here

http://www.v6calibra.net/gearbox/v6calibra_gearbox.htm

It now changes gear perfectly, if that doesn't work for you try clutch adjustment and see how that goes.

the whining noise is most likely a bearing in the gearbox my mates saxo vtr whined in 3rd and it was the input shaft bearing that had gone i replaced that for him and it was fine. you can either strip the gearbox and put a new bearing in or get another box

First suspect would be the linkage. If the gearbox is knackered then a new one is the best option imo

Cheers guys,

I'd say that bullet point 3 above (eg the metal scraping along the road) also sounds very much like i'm dragging a couple of baked bean cans underneath the car. Which i would guess is likely to be something inside the gearbox? Not sure what would cause it to make that noise in 3rd, and only sometimes, but something definitely isn't right. I'll try the linkage, but think that's more likely to fix the selecting gears problem, rather than the more worrying noises.

Think i'm gonna wait till it fails, as at the moment it's still perfectly driveable and only comes and goes (although it is getting worse).

I have a similar problem with me other motor, it's the diff bearing that is causing this grinding/whirring noise, not so much a whining noise, but I have problems sometimes getting into gear but it doesn't seem to be that much of an issue.

Whining sounds like a bearing of some short thats on it's way out, do you know any garages that could recon your gearbox?

Gear linkage or clutch problems would be expected to have been happening in other gears as well.
As it is directly related to third gear, I would strongly suspect it is the problem - possibly the bearing/bush is allowing the gearset to run unevenly.

Agreed, the noise is only in third right?

I have an f25 gearbox here Storm, but try the above fixes first :)

There is also the chance of an accident if the gearbox seizes up and the recovery costs if the vehicle has to be transported to a place of repair - going to be much cheaper to get onto a replacement and/or repair now.
