Actually the blue CTS is for the ECU regardless of aircon, and the black one is for the dash.

Lol I just realised mine was blue when I got the part number and got worried for a minute :)

I have been following this thread all day on my phone at work!
but couldn't see the links!
My car is having all the symptoms of the OP!
So I stopped at a shop on the way home and got a coolant temp sensor!

But I have the wrong bloody thing >:(! I have the sender that tells your dash what the temp is!!!!! >:(
And I know this because know when my cooling fan cuts in and out! the temp needle is NOT where it usually sits!

I have not got air con!!!!

there is one on Ebay with a black plug!
http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&_nkw=calibra+coolant+sensor&_sacat=See-All-Categories

and the one earlyer in this thread which is blue!!!

The thing I have!! and tells the dash needle where to be looks like this!!

and on the car it looks like this! (thing with red ring on it is the new sensor I picked up to day!)

So hear we have 3 diffrent sensors!!

If you read the link you posted it will tell you that the coolant sensor has a blue body.

[/b]

I was more pointing out the sensor that sends info to the dash(on mine) is not black... or blue,

and doesn't look like the other one!

Either way I still didn't get the one I wanted when I asked for a 'coolant temp sensor'! :(

try again tomorrow!! ::)

Your first pic with a single connector is the dash coolant sensor, all other ECU CTS are blue.

you sure mate?  because both my alternatives for the CTS ecu 2 pin connector on my car were blue but had different part numbers and different internal resistances. hence the cock up.  they all use the same plug but i am not sure they are all the same.

the exhaust plays one constant note!!(unlike it did)

glad my post helped did not expect such a debate  though and the debate over ebay is why i went to vauxhall 1st  i wanted the right part  1st time i dont trust a lot of the rub heads knocking out a million things and the info they gave all seemed to contradict  each other and 20 rubs by the time you added postage an original  was just as cheapp the different  colours are what he told me said you dont have air con i had already told him it was a 2ltr red top then he said you  want the blue 1 then and not the black 1

Don't know about the V6!

Now, I'm sure everyone waiting for it but is afraid to ask- so I will.

Can we have a step by step guide to removal and refitting for both the 16v and the V6 with pictures please? Including CTS location, removal and refitting tips and part numbers if poss. All in one nice easy to understand post.

Sound like a pretty important maintenance procedure too me.

Mine will be getting another service in the near future so I can do a guide for CTS, plugs, leads etc with part numbers including inlet manifold gasket.

By the time I've done it though it will have already been done :P

Changed the CTS on my V6 , piece of the proverbial p1ss.

19mm (or 3/4") socket or open ended spanner was all that was required.

Unplug cable. Unscrew CTS. I lost about a thimbleful of coolant. Screw in new CTS. Tighten. Job done. 2 minutes to do at most.

I used a little, (very little) gasket compond on the thread of the CTS as a precaution.

I got the sensor from here, very good seller: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370164125114

For the V6, the Vx part number is apparently: 90510183
