Clanking on cold at power steering pump / timing belt pulley
« on: February 02, 2018, 20:01:49 PM »
When I start the engine from cold (as in sitting at least a day), for the first couple of minutes there's an unhealthy clanking/scraping/rattling noise from around where the power steering pump and timing belt pulley exist.  It goes away after a couple of couple minutes at most, and won't reappear until it's left for another day or so without starting.   Timing belt is not due for replacement, although going to get it changed for piece of mind.  Any ideas ?  I'd have thought if it was pump bearing related that it would be there constantly.  It's not the usual whining of a failing power steering pump.  It's metal on metal.  ('97 ecotec engine by the way). Thanks.

Theres a lot going on down there.....my power steering pump was making a rough noise so I took it off to have a look.....there was a bit of play in the Pully....i refitted it n topped up the oil with new....the new oil had an additive that helps stop squeaks too....it was a bit better...I endded up changing it later....there will be a pully down the side for the belt...might be that....but im not an expert on the Ecotec Engine.....

I did find out that there is two sizes of pully on the pump...on my 8v engine one rubbed on a engine mount...

Is the steering smooth when you drive....?

Thanks for that.

Yes, everything runs perfectly - I'm 99.99% it's not a problem with the pump itself.  When I get the timing belt changed next week will be able to see things a bit better.  May just be age related and needs a bit of lube for the first few cranks....but then, don't we all get like that ?   :)

I'm not even sure it's down the power steering pump anymore - think it's the back of the engine.  Managed to grab a few seconds of video with sound this morning when started it up before the rattle went away...

ooh sounds rough.....the only thing i can think of is the Alternator....some have a fan type thing to cool them....it might be loose or bent in some way..?

Yep. It’s looking more like that now that I can hear it’s from the back. It’ll be dismantled on Wednesday so all will be revealed. Thanks.

And the conclusion was......water pump on its way out.

New pump.  New timing belt.  Off for a blast across the hills now...!
