Changing Manifold.
« on: May 14, 2006, 15:40:11 PM »
Hello.

I know this may sound very incompetant, but how do you change the manifold on 2l ecotec. Is it just a case of taking off the heat shield, undoing bolts on the manifold, removing manifold, then replacing with new manifold and gasket?
I dont have a Haynes manual, and im no mechanic.

Cheers

Josh.

(Also, how long do you think it would take?)

I've been warned not to try this myself as the risk of Manifold bolts snapping is quite high and pretty common - They're almost impossible to get out (once snapped) and normally have to be drilled.

Wouldn't attempt it yourself dude, if you do BE SURE TO TAKE PHOTOS, hehe

thats the sort of job i would put on someone else because as soon as they touch it and it snaps its down to them to fix as it wasnt snapped when it went in

True, although I've heard of some mechanics blaming the 'car' not themselves for snapped manifold bolts...but then I think its quite standard for them to snap due to the temperatures involved whilst the cars running, expanding/contracting the metal.

Check the situation with the mechanic before he starts the job.

i had a very similar problem when i had new tyres fitted, they broke the track rod end bolt when doing the alignment and said it was down to me to get the parts and fix it etc, so the car was stuck in the workshop for a weekend as it happend on a Saturday afternoon.

if your going to attempt it yourself make sure manifold is hot causes metal to expand hence less chance of bolts snapping

But surely the bolts would be more prone to expand than the manifold itself? being of a lesser metal?

The problem is cause by electrolitic corrosion at the joint (due to two metals being in contact with each other) and corrosion (rusting) of the stud if it is steel. The principle of using heat is to allow the metal holding the stud to expand (the alloy head) faster than the stud (steel or brass). This is normally done by heating the stud. Alternatly soak the studs in Plusgas (WD40 is not good at this) or brake fluid overnight.

In an ideal world there should be a steel or brass stud with a brass nut so that a steel nut will not rust to a steel stud.

IMCSherry you should now have your points, they're showing as you're very rich according to the shop, hehe - best bank before someone steals!!

Yeah a guide on this would be great, thanks! Create it in the Submissions/Requests forum, and we'll upgrade it to the FAQ subfolder once you've finished!
