Ok had a look at this, this evening. Checked the backplate first.....I assume its the thin plate covering about a 1/4 of the disc at the rear? Anyway it wasnt that.

On rotating the disc, i could tell the grinding was definitely coming from the brake pad area.

I therefore removed the spring clip [1] and just sort of wiggled things around a bit, whilst rotating the disc trying to find out where it was grinding.

I think it was the outside brake pad that had shifted because when I used a screwdriver to lever it to one side (sort of away from the hub and into its casing), i noticed the disc now turned much more freely. I put the spring clip back in and the wheel back on, took it for a spin and voila, the squealing and grinding has gone !!! ;D

Would i be correct that the brake pad is probably not screwed tightly enough to whatever you call the bit it is screwed to? And would i also be right that i'd have to remove the whole caliper(?) to get at these screws/bolts to tighten them?

So big thanks to smokeyjoe and enigma. Another karma to you smokeyjoe as you've helped me sort TWO things today for my upcoming MOT ;D

[1] PS that spring clip was an absolute bugger to get back on. Is there some special way of doing it other than brute force and a lot of care not to slip and slice your finger in half lol ?

Glad to hear you have it sorted Storm.

[1] That spring clip. It's all about manoeuvring it and playing with it. I found that one side was more flexible naturally than the other, so would put the one side half in, then gently pursuade the other pin into the slot and push the whole mech into place in one firm movement.

That outer brakepad, I have found, is not really "held" into place by any logical pins as the inner one is, I assume it relies on said spring clip to keep tension. I will need to adjust mine shortly, as replacing them recently I too have noticed slight squeeking here and there as I drive along, especially when turning.

You can probably work this out from the statements above, however for calibrafication clarification;

The brake pad is simply "placed" and held in by the clip AFAIK.  So there is no tightening or anything of the like.
The inner pad is clipped in with 3 metal prongs, IMO how the outer should also be fitted. Alas.

If you were to get at the pads, you would remove hex bolts and the spring clip. It will then slide off.
The caliper frame is 2 10mm alan bolts (very tight) but it's not required to move this unless you change the disk.

Ok thanks for the info, thats really helpful.

I noticed the pad did have a fair bit of free movement when i took the clip off, so it seems that the shifting of the brake pad is probably not a major problem then, and is just held in place by the clip as you say, and its just one of those things that happens occasionally.

I just wanted to be sure, that there wasn't something else that had caused it to slip.

Cheers again for your help enigma ;)
