Alternator surge on starting
« on: November 12, 2017, 01:39:05 AM »
Hi, just wondering if anyone else 8v does the same as mine.

I turn it over and start her up without issue but things like the heated rear screen won't switch on and the fan speed is reduced until I rev it.

Is this normal for an 8v? I don't remember my red top or v6 doing this?

Also the heated seat don't switch on immediately and take a minute or two to actually power up, you switch them on and then the switch illuminates a while later but not straight away and the seat starts to warm, any ideas? Maybe a relay somewhere?

Thanks

As far as i can remember my 8v was the same...theres a lot of current draw when cold starting...i use to wait a min to let it all "settle" then put on the seat etc.....if you turn it all on as soon as you get in and start the Alternator will struggle...the output is only 100amp...unlike other calibras that have 120 amp ones......the rear defrost will suck up power too....!!

Ya carnt just get in and start up and switch every thing on like you can in newer cars.

That is strange I have never had anything like that on my Ecotec.   :-\
Is the battery fairly new and does it turn the engine easily? the only thing i could think of is if the battery is a bit weak and so takes a bit of charge after starting to let you use the electrics.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses, yes its a new battery just a few months old and it is starting ok.  If its usual behaviour for an 8v then no problem, I just wanted to make it wasn't an isue that was building into something bigger.

It just seemed strange as I hadn't seen it on any of my previous Calibra's but this is the first 8v I've had.

Hi ,
Sorry to say every button worked ok this morning on my 8v, however I must say that the car is garaged and the Outside Temp indicated 4 degrees.
Cheers

Sounds like me when I get up in the morning Lol

I would check your earth main connection straps are all sound and tight..but as sealysonic said alternator amps or lack of them can put a strain on your electrics.

I have a 1992 turbo but because it had no Air Con the alternator rating was only......70amps.......I have since fitted a 120amp one which I sourced from the USA.

Now it's like it's on Viagra.........and guess bloody what........it's made for a Chevy and it is plated in Chrome.....sad it's out of sight behind the engine. :-\

Lastly Cold weather will play havoc with your battery and electrics........I have wrapped my battery with chrome bubble wrap against Jack Frost

Works fine for me.......Sorry must tell you this.......mate of mine wouldn't believe me it was chrome.......so what does he do .......moves his head
closer to the alternator cooling fan......and with a bone screaming yell and a noise like one of those meat slicers he removed the tip of his nose

and got bright red blood all over my nice chrome thingy...........He hasn't been round lately.......am I bad ::) ???

I may look at uprating the alternator.  As soon as I accelerate the lights brighten, heated screen comes on.  Strangely the passenger always lights up and swiths on but the drivers one doesn't.

An upgrade to a higher speck alternator is highly recommended  8)

The design engineer's would have done calculations based on what electrical items have to powered from the alternator to work out the best alternator that will be fit for it's purpose. However this is only based on the standard parts fitted at the time of manufactur.

Fast forward to the present day where us owners add items like ...Sat Navs.....Mobile phones.....updated sound systems...etc...etc will drive the alternator harder than it can handle.......when also during winter months ......you will have the heater on......demister ...headlights....with possibly Hid conversion bulbs....wipers going like the clapper's... and on top of all that the alternator has to keep the battery power topped up.

What is the alternator amperage that is on your car now ??...if you can upprate it.....you will notice a difference but before you do sort out your present electrical faults ........as if not the most powerful alternator will be useless.

I have always sugested owners should call a Mobile Car tuner......they will come to your house or place of work to not only computer check how

the engine is performing...but can trace and find electrical faults...fix them...or advise a diy repair. They charge approx £30.00 to £40 per call out

But well worth it when they have diagnosed your engine....and found your engine electrical problems....and will tell you some valuable info to boot.

Sorry I have written a book again ::)

Good luck and keep at it.......you will succeed. :)

Mine does it, just blip the throttle on start up :)
