16V Ecotec turns over but won't start
« on: February 03, 2017, 00:43:56 AM »
Hi All. It's been a while but I need some help with a problem. My car has been sitting idle for over a year but I've been regularly (weekly/fortnightly) running it to keep the fluids moving and the air-con working in the hope of selling it one day. Now, the car will turn over but won't start and looking at some old threads it's likely to be the fuel pump relay. Seems like there's possibly two locations for the relay:
- Right side foot well below the ECU
- Engine bay fuse/relay box
In the foot well I can identify a single relay (black) while in the engine bay there are three (2 green, one purple). I should have taken a picture to make it easier but from some of what I've read the fuel pump relay should be the purple one. Would I be right in thinking this?

Are they easy enough to come by and at what cost? If it isn't the relay then it'll be the fuel pump (hoping not). I've eliminated the crank position sensor and immobiliser because the fuel pump isn't switching on when I turn the key.

Your wisdom and assistance is much appreciated.

Hi,
I am not sure where the fuel pump relay is, but the relay is black and has the part number 90378651. Maybe it's worth checking the relays with this number as a way to find it.
 Cheers

Hi Guys. We traced the fault to the fuel pump relay and managed to get it operational again which lasted a while but it's time to replace it. Does anyone have one from a car they're breaking or can they recommend a site in the UK (or anywhere for that matter) where I can get one?
I found a couple in Russia but don't have a lot of confidence that I'd actually get the part.

Just for a laugh I called a local Holden dealer to get a quote on the fuel pump relay. Now I've purchased this on ebay for $A23.95 new, including delivery from the UK (should arrive next week).
The dealer down the road wanted $A182.65!!!! That is roughly what it is going to cost me to register the car for 3 months while we sort out my wife's car that was rear ended, or nearly 20% what the car is worth on the second hand market here.

Ha ha poor old Holden, or should I say GM or Isuzu or?

In Oz they've always looked down on the Opel derived products... now they have none... products of their own that is.

A few years back I went to see a tech at a Holden dealership and pulled up beside a (then) new Maloo ute on ramps. The salesman wandered over and asked if I was looking to trade the Cali... I said sure, I'm interested in trading on any new vehicle on the lot that wasn't leaking oil from the main seal or sump.

I was once quoted, wait for it (and be certain you are sitting)... $1550 for a pair of front lower wishbones... too funny  ;D

Crazy isn't it? But it isn't just the price of new parts. A couple of years ago I had to get a new pump for the wiper washers. A wrecker in Adelaide wanted $50 odd for one (it would have been 20 years old at the time). I bought one from a UK parts site for $18 including delivery and it was brand new.
And they don't like it when you point out the extent of the rip-off!

Crazy isn't it? But it isn't just the price of new parts...

I recently tried to buy an A/C condensor... you know buy Australian made and all that. The first one they sent (via Repco) was clearly the wrong unit. I didn't even take it out of the shop and wanted it swapped for the correct one. No problem. 3 weeks later... 3 weeks from Adelaide to Sydney, and they sent the very same unit back again! The best bit was Repco 2nd time around telling me I had to pay for it now because it was a 'special order'... ha ha, I quipped... it was so special it didn't even fit. The manufacturer then told me over the phone that my Cali must have been altered as that was the only listing/variation on their list.

In the end I searched UK listings for a radiator specialist, I rang them and they sent the correct one next morning via UPS. When Repco contacted me threatening court/collection, I said you and your supplier are going to look pretty silly in court when I produce the photos and the invoice of the replacement oem unit.

Seriously, now I don't want to get political and all that but the Brits think they've got problems ala Brexit. Here (in Oz) you get assaulted and robbed simultaneously and if you object you're then threatened with legal consequences.

I hear you. Aussie retailers are going to get a pretty rude shock when Amazon ramps up next year.

So, the new fuel pump relay arrived, plugged it in and, no joy. No pressure in the fuel rails so could be the pump, but we found there was no problem there last time. Any ideas or similar experience from anyone else? One theory I have is maybe the connections for the relay aren't doing their thing though I find that hard to fathom. Will keep at it but any suggestions would be great.

It`s possible that the connections might have got hot and melted/come loose...they may look ok from the outside but it might be worth looking at the  of the connector the relay sits in....

Thats a link to a PDF manual......the Fuel relay does quite a few jobs....it also supplies voltage to the ECU....in the back of the Manual are wiring diagrammes that might help.

Wow  :o And I thought it was us poor old Brits that got tucked up on the price of good and services.

Hope you get that sorted. When my Ecotec played up we traced it to the relay unit by the footwell. A new one was fitted and hey presto, all was good again.
Drives: an original SE6 auto, 81,000 miles (approx) and still going strong......(but some work is needed!). Now my second car.
