Title: SAMARAI's '95 2.0L Ecotec from Australia! ;)
Post by: SAMARAI on September 12, 2012, 15:45:22 PM
Hey there guys. I'm From Australia and here's my pride and joy!

As she stands! (please excuse the Camera phone quality)

Best car I've owned. Absolutely love it!
In comparison to Firstly my 1979 Honda Accord (5spd) and then my 2000 Toyota Camry CSI, my Calibra is like a dream. I'm keen for any feedback and tips on modding!

The previous owner had already:
- Lowered it
- Stiffened the suspension
- Tow Bar
- Installed? a rear windscreen sunshade (not sure if these came stock)
- Muffler (fairly loud but legal)
- Aftermarket Kenwood headunit

I'm a student and its a slow modification process:
- Firstly Put on 3.5inch exhaust tip over the factory rusted looking straw
- Installed Multi-Coloured LED's in the driver and passenger's footwells (Ladies love it and I like how it illuminates the floor. Something is missing without them on. Pictures coming soon)
- Fitted chrome tyre pressure valve caps (someone quite sadly stole them.. was a matter of time I guess)
- Replaced the rusted tow bar with a new chrome one
- The left indicator stalk needed replacing, works like perfect now
- Painted the brake calipers red for the extra 25Kw XD
- Alpine headunit, Alpine rear 6x9 speakers, 6" Clarion fronts and replaced my factory tweeters with those from a 1997 v6 Calibra
- Adjusted the front lowbeams with a new set of Globes (so I can actually see where im driving)
- Custom modified a set of white front windscreen wipers to fit the wiper arms
- Just recently resprayed the front bumper as it was looking quite faded
- Finally bogged and resprayed over scratches from previous owner (rear bumper guards mostly) So much better now!
- Re-blacked the trim ie, door handles, black plastic trim, seatbelts window wipers and seals!

Future plans are still a work in progress but one can only dream right?
- I'm definitely going to keep the clean look
- Bigger rims are a work in progress but would be nice
- An amp and a Sub (I'm content with my current set up but one can never go wrong with extra power and bass right?? XD)
- Window tint
- Possibly change the side guard indicators to something clear?.. HELP?

So thats my daily for you guys! Hope you enjoyed the read!

Feel free to comment. I'd love to chat to you all about my pride and joy!

Cheers for reading.
Have a good one!

Sama!

I'd go for clear oval ones with a dark tint on a white Calibra, definately get shot of the orange "boils"!

Yeah I'd think that should suit. The Orange "Nipples" stick out alot!
Do I have to replace the whole wiring or can I just fit a cover over the top like this? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/330465583343#ht_2900wt_1271 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/330465583343#ht_2900wt_1271)

Hahaha people!
Thanks for the repeaters help. Will have to suss which one i think will suit my white Calibra best. The LED's one would look sick but dunno if it would suit the car? I dont have LED's anywhere else in the car. I might go for a clear/white oval style. Dont think im going to go for the Focus triangle style one! I think its a bit much.

haha as for the bars and brakes talk lol XD

I fit these triangular ones, thought the suited the calibra lines.

Think there Ford focus but I can't remember. But warning don't buy the cheap LED triangle ones off ebay, the sticky backing peeled off mine within a few months of fitting :( these are normal clear lamp and stick properly.

looks great mate! but is it a hassle to take on and off if you need to change the bulbs??
by the way people.. many of the repeaters available on ebay that i've tried dont import to Australia :(

Can anyone suggest a clear oval or triangle (focus style) that get shipped worldwide??

Can anyone recommend a supplier of Opel badges for my Calibra?
Im thinking of Opelising it from Holden badges to Opel! Gotta embrace the Calibra origins!!

My car has the front bumper V-grille.. does the whole thing need to be replaced with the opel badge on the new grille??
Pricing??

Cheers fellas!

hahaha mate ;)

another question thats always been on the back of my mind.
My Cali is a manual and the gear stick knob on my shifter the top surface has cracked and rattles..
Ofcourse for the cali to go in reverse there's the plastic pasrt you have to pull up and then shift to 1st.. to get a replacement knob.. is it easy? would have to be a specific make for the calibra? anything else that would get me by?

My reverse is in a different place being the V6 but the knob is easy enough to change, getting the old one off is a tit though, I still have a scar on my hand ;D Google Richbrook, they do knobs :)

You could always take the gear lever out and put it in a vice pull the leather boot off and your see a metal pin your need a long screwdriver to flick it out

Im considering replacing the Holden Badges with Opel ones! The current holden ones are looking dated and show their age! Im also considering a chrome "calibra" badge for the rear as a replacement like the V6 calibra badge.. Can anyone recommend where I can order from?

Well if you find what you want on evil bay why not ask nicely and get it posted to a member who could then post to you?

I don't why sellers don't post to Aus or SA, they are missing a trick TBH! OK you take your chances a bit as some air mail you can't track it for some dim reason but there you go!

Yeah what's the go with the headlights. The first time I drove mine at night I noticed how dim the low beams seemed (although the high beam is good). . . Had a look at the lights and thought, "Ah. The middle lights are both blown". . . . Had another look and realised that the middle lights are dummies!?!

As for the indicator repeaters and where to get them: how about checking similar items that are sold in the after market motorcycle scene?

Oh yeah. . . Very tidy car too Samarai ;D

With mine mate like yours, seemed very dim and I couldn't see very far at all with the low beams on. Definitely invest in a new set of High Powered globes.. Something white/clear so you don't have that terrible yellow tinge in your head lights.
I also got my mechanic to adjust the height/range of the headlights up! Such a difference now.. No going back and have quite a range I can see now while driving at night!!

As for side repeaters.. I'm looking for some myself. There's tons on Ebay.. Mostly from the UK, Germany etc. If you get clear side repeaters make sure you have amber globes or the police might have a few things to say!

Not to sure about the motorcycle scene to be honest mate.

Cheers mate! I take pride in treating her well!!

Forgot bout the dummy lights you spoke of.
Mate! They are Fog lights.. Now like mine which aren't fitted with the switches and globes.. Yours probably doesn't have them either but again off ebay you can pick up a pair of headlights with the fog lights in them. Just need to install the switches and relays (can be taken off opels of the same year.. Astra, corsa and the like.. I'm not too sure)
Hope it helps!

Yeah I only have the rear "fog light", so I do have the switch on the dash. Having said that though, I'm not really fussed about not having the front fog lights (ironically we do have fog up here quite often). It was just bugging me not knowing why there were "blanks" :)
Title: Re: SAMARAI's '95 2.0L Ecotec from Australia! ;)
Post by: SAMARAI on November 10, 2012, 10:56:54 AM
Yeah mate I have the switch for the rear foggies too! Helps illuminate when parallel parking at night and also when needing to blind the driver behind if they're tailgating or have incorrectly adjusted HID's xD
Yeah I'm not overly fussed about not having front foggies either.. Wouldn't use them in the city as cops would get dodgy and really how much country driving in hills would you be doing at night! High beams suffice! XD

Ooh, looks very gracefully done.

What's the black armour-like stuff on the rear bumper behind the wheels?

My current plans for the Calibra:

- White LED?s for Interior roof light, Numberplate lamps, Boot, Glove Box and Parkers (LED?s currently in transit)

- Opelise front V grille (45mm badge currently in transit)

- Replace/Modernize tired looking Clutch-Brake-Gas pedals

- A nice black (leather) steering wheel cover. (Im very picky about this lol)

- Fix some minor drooping roof lining

- Window tint all round 35% (That?s Darkest legal in my state)

- Remove rear bumper vinyls and re-spray rear bumper

- (Possibly) paint side, front and rear trim either black or white.

UPDATE TIME!

It?s LED Conversion Time!
The transformation is amazing in my eyes! In the flesh.. the White LED?s are so much brighter and add so much more to the cally. Its breathed a breath of fresh air to the car! Really does look so much more modern and fresh! Away are the horrible dull yellow globes!
Much thanks to my man Eddey for helping this happen! Cheers matey!

Standards to LED?s ? So much brighter with a hint of blue.. The new look is great!

Shows the rear numberplate off much better aye? ;) So much more fresh!

With LED?s the interior is so much more of a joy to be in. Its so bright and vibrant now I got a comment from a passenger the other night that they needed glasses it was so much brighter than before XD
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/LED-ified%20Cally/calibra3_zps3a564fc3.jpg)

Much easier to see the whole boot now!

Again fresh looking even in the Glove Box! :P
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/LED-ified%20Cally/131_zps797fde6e.jpg)

The rear looks complete now! Opelised, chrome badges and LED numberplate lamps! Proud to leave the tailgaters in my dust now! ;)

Blue Tinged Cally XD
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/LED-ified%20Cally/10_zps7f8ee119.jpg)

LED Parkers are on only here! Amazed at how bright it looks now!

Low Beams on too here! Much more yellow looking in comparison!

Much easier to see in this shot.. At a distance a nice colour toning can be seen. Bluer parkers against white low beams!

Any Opel badges/stickers that will fit my steering wheel here?

Calibra drivers will know there's a lip around the emblem here and most stickers wont stick to the plastic/leather that is the steering wheel.
Is the only option to superglue an emblem over it?

Any Opel badges/stickers that will fit my steering wheel here?

Here's an idea (bear in mind it's only a thought, it may work or may be a complete fail), I've just bought these for my brake calipers......

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350693342720 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350693342720)

They also do them in Opel.........

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OPEL-Brake-Caliper-Decals-Stickers-Agila-Ampera-Insignia-Astra-Corsa-Vectra-/380556355516?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item589aed27bc (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OPEL-Brake-Caliper-Decals-Stickers-Agila-Ampera-Insignia-Astra-Corsa-Vectra-/380556355516?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item589aed27bc)

The round badges, intended for the rear calipers, are exactly the same size as the logo on the airbag (I've just checked them against a spare airbag of mine) & there's 3 of them in the set.

They come in a choice of colours so you may find something that works. :)

UPDATE TIME!

I decided to use forever black on the bumper and door trim! The current grey was getting on my nerves.. it was looking really dull and showing its age. I always wondered would black look nicer and I decided to test a small area first and that turned to all skirts and trim getting the forever black treatment!

It looks much better now! much more refreshed and sheek!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was the first area I tested on!

After.. I decided it looked so good that the rest of the car was going BLAAACK!

Roof Racks before..

Roof Racks after! much better in black!

The rear had the most faded strip..

I don't have more pictures during as when I did the work it was getting closer to night and was too dark! but this gives you an idea!
I love the overall look of the car now! I do recommend this to anyone who wants to make their cali younger.. from the dull grey to the fresh black!

I used this product called forever Black. Quite cheap and it came with a solution cleaner you use to prep the area so there is no grease. I got it from super cheap auto.

I 'Opelised' mine years ago...front had V-grill removed with the larger Opel logo in the front bumper. Rear has the chrome circular style badge. I sourced an Opel airbag, and also changed the V6 engine cover.

Yeah I know right! even though the Megane is a 2002.
I guess its true they say.. some car's styling is timeless!
If I had the Megane I'd be rushing to get New rims on there! 17" at the least! would change the whole look!

To Do:
- I installed the new gear stick gator.. but it keeps popping out of its place which is annoying. So Im thinking of lightly gluing it down so it doesn't keep popping out and give me ADHD :P
- Darkest legal tint (Looking at the best quotes)
- Get the roof lining restored! (Annoying and drooping at the driver and passengers sides)

Thanks a bunch mate!

Hahaa It's very intriguing hey.. The only car I've ever seen have them let alone a cali. Probably the only cali out there with the on there which makes it unique :p
They are black vinyl sticker type plastics. Previous owner is the one responsible.. Maybe hiding damage.. Or rust? Who knows.. I'm thinking of a re spray of the whole rear bumper when I do eventually take them off. :P

As I write this.. She is getting tinted windows.
I'm getting the darkest legal tint. So keen to see what it looks like afterwards!
If it helps save the interior and keep it cool inside.. Well that's a bonus, but I think a darker shade of Window tint than no tint as current will sit really well on a white car!
WOO soo keen!

Unfortunately, in GB, you're no longer allowed to tint the front side (door) windows, or you can only tint them slightly.  Fortunately I had mine tinted before the law changed (in 1983?) and I had the sides and rear done in what was then the darkest legal tint, with the front and rear sides in the same % tint and the rear even darker.  I've never had any trouble with them.

You can still tint the rear side and tailgate windows, but it doesn't look so good, if the rear windows are tinted more than the front.  Surprisingly, there doesn't appear to be a limit on how dark you can tint the rear window, although it could make the internal rear-view mirror less useful...

Oh wow you lucky thing! sounds like you got in there in the nick of time! :P

I've got darkest legal and so far only seen it at night as thats when I finished work and drove her home.. so far im noticing that the tailgating cars behind dont blind me through the side and rear view mirrors anymore which is a plus! cant wait to see the look in the daylight!
yeah i think its the same everywhere.. the front windows can only be darkest legal and the rears can be as dark as you want.. i guess those cops want to see if they can bust us for no seatbelts or using our phones etc.. but i guess too dark and you cant check plind spot as easily?? :P

The police like to see who is driving etc and also dark on the front is like driving in the dark with sunglasses on, not clever as you won't see properly at junctions etc at night.

That's true! I noticed it was quite darker at night looking through the side windows than before. Anymore and it definitely would be a hazard for sure!

Lets hope I dont fall into habit and open the windows as I usually do.. its a habit but I have to resist.. two days minimum to make sure everything is settled and not going to peel off since its been installed yesterday! gotta wait a few days :/

GUYS AND GIRLS!
OPINION TIME!!!!!

After receiving the car.. to my horror.. the rear windshield spoiler was removed! I guess so they could measure on the outside of the car how much tint they need.
I have a photo with it on and off!
Which to go with?
I'm used to it on there.. so to me right now it looks empty and bare.. but im starting to like it. On the other hand it becomes my cali im used to with it on!
Decisions decisions what do we think!?

Spoiler on...

Spoiler off...

Which has your vote!?
Without, makes the car look sleek and the rear lines aren't messed up.. but with it on, gives it a little somethin somethin.. and I understand not many cali's have them ay?

I'd say, given that the bodywork on your Calibra is still standard, that it's better off without it.

I like roof spoilers, I have one myself, but I think they're better suited to Calibra's with some kind of bodykit.

yeah valid point.. although a roof spoiler you can get away with on a standard car I think.. If i put a massive rear boot spoiler.. that would be a bit overkill with standard bodywork.

UPDATE!

Just messing with this Idea. It was to make a template of the word Calibra that fits over the 3rd brake light so when the brake is applied.. the letters C, A, L, I, B, R, A, shine up!

I simply used black paper as a template, drew the letters, cut the letters out with a stanley knife and presto! An hour of fussing around, designing, cutting and fitting.. we have a rough copy!

Would probably have to laminate the paper so it doesn't get wet when it rains.. or Im thinking a same design but in black acrylic/plastic.

Like I said thought I'd give this idea a crack! It almost came out as I imagined..

UPDATE!

Its been a while since I've updated with progress on the cali.

Now I've always dreamed about a sub.. especially after my mother's old BMW had one! I love good quality music and it always keeps me sane on long drives!
So after a year and a half of umming and ahhing, i finally decided i could justify one! My Type S 6x9's were awesome but lacking a little bass to my ears. So I eventually decided on a 10" active sub.

BEFORE
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/Post%20Tint/11_zps10d45165.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/Post%20Tint/11_zps10d45165.jpg.html)

AFTER
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/Post%20Tint/22_zpscec6449d.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/Post%20Tint/22_zpscec6449d.jpg.html)

After some haggling, this set me back $169 and ticked all my boxes..
- Small enough so my boot is still practical (My guitar still fits in the boot even with the sub in there)
- Low not Loud
- Not vibrate my trim/passengers till they fall off ;)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/Post%20Tint/33_zpsf86044fb.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/Post%20Tint/33_zpsf86044fb.jpg.html)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/Post%20Tint/44_zps60163d8f.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/Post%20Tint/44_zps60163d8f.jpg.html)

After figuring out how to get the positive lead through the firewall and connected to the positive terminal of the battery, the rest was easy enough!
Im in love with my sound system! DAT BASS <3 hahaa

Now Im not sure if its all in the car's build or something but even at the max volume that I enjoy the music without it getting distorted.. with the windows up and standing outside the car its barely audible and there is never any numberplate rattling which are two pluses! I haven't done any sound deadning.. Calibra manufacturing for the win XD

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/Post%20Tint/55_zpsa361e19e.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/Post%20Tint/55_zpsa361e19e.jpg.html)

Oh also another win is that it fits perfectly behind where spare wheel pokes out and the back seat.. it was a very snug fit and the carpeting is almost 100% to the original boot carpeting already there! I cannot be happier with how it all turned out! :D

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next it was round 2 of the DIY third brake light template!

So this time after a few suggestions I had my 2nd more refined attempt at this idea.

First I ordered two of these bad boys!

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/Post%20Tint/11111_zpsf68ce45b.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/Post%20Tint/11111_zpsf68ce45b.jpg.html)

The idea of this decal on my rear windshield was exciting and as it also turned out the text size was exactly the same size I needed for the width of the template.

So I cut the letters out, then using my previous attempt traced that same shape onto a piece of laminate. Cut that out, glued the letters down, spray painted over them and then took the letters off leaving the clear laminate showing through.

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/Post%20Tint/66_zps654a72eb.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/Post%20Tint/66_zps654a72eb.jpg.html)

From there it was as simple as peel and stick and away we go!

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/Post%20Tint/77_zps6d291dae.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/Post%20Tint/77_zps6d291dae.jpg.html)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/Post%20Tint/88_zpsb4c8c54e.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/Post%20Tint/88_zpsb4c8c54e.jpg.html)

My phone doesn't do it justice and the red of the tail lights and brake light looks washed out.. but I love this simple DIY!
Feels good to stand out from the pack and advertise the Calibra when a driver pulls up behind me at the red lights!
Not sure if its a permanent addition but I love it!
It looks way more effective at night but sadly the phone doesn't do much justice! but you get the idea :P

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next I came across one of these bad boys!
My jaw nearly dropped when my cousin surprised me with this! Tis epic ;) same colour and all!

- Completed White LED Speedo/Guages install
- Installed new Pioneer Bluetooth Headunit
- Installed White Vectra door handles
- Removed sagging roof liner
- Installed new Subwoofer (Autobahn replaced my faulty active sub free of charge!)

- New Pioneer Headunit (The bluetooth means no more usb cables to plug the ipod in :D Love that! The headunit also came with a microphone that I've wired to the top of the drivers side front windshield pillar. This now gives me handsfree bluetooth when my phone is connected to the headunit! Love this new headunit!)

I think the white handles sit so much better against the white colour of the car. The handles sit flush and give the car a much more modern look I think.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To Do List:

- Install White or Blue Neons in the footwells that turn on when doors are opened
- Re trim the roof lining
- Get a replacement set of tyres for rears as I discovered a pin with the head the size of 10c coin in my rear left tyre :(
- Remove black vinyls from rear bumper bar
- White converted switches
- (Long term) Angel eyes

Totally agree about the colour-coded (and de-locked) Vectra door handles.  I've got the same on my Nautilus Blue Calibra.  The original black door handles stand out even more against white, or any other light coloured car, than they did on my darker car.

Mine has just started to develop the same 'sagging roof liner' (for the first time)! :(  In my case it has only just started happening.  I suspect the extreme heat (!!!) we've been experiencing recently :) has softened the adhesive.  I tried spraying some new industrial strength impact adhesive (SA-90) between the fabric and the roof to refix the fabric and tucked it back under the rubber trim around the tailgate.  This worked for a while, but in the last couple of days, when we've experienced 32.5 deg C temperatures, the glue appears to have melted and obviously gone soft and the lining has started to come away again. :( :(  Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?

Cheers man! And definitely colour coded is so much better. I thought I liked the black white colour schemeing on the car and thought the black handles looked alright but the look now is so much better!

Now mate I only ever once tried to re glue the sagging roof liner above  the rear Winfield line and front above the windshield. Both sections I used superglue and that did the trick for a year and a half and never once gave way untill I had to yank them free.. It really put up a fight. So if you only have a small section.. Superglue will definitely do the trick but I do know that these ageing cars will continue to have the roof lining droop so you too may need to re do it all when the sagging gets unbearable!

That's what I was afraid of.  I'll have to consult my Haynes manual to see if it gives a 'blow-by-blow' account of removing and replacing the roof lining.  I suspect the trim on the A, B & C posts all have to be removed to remove the roof lining.  To remove these is it necessary to remove the rear quarter panels and dashboard?  What about the sun-roof?  I assume it is possible to remove the trim around the sun-roof without removing the sun-roof itself.  To match the sun-roof lining, I suppose you have to stick with a vinyl which matches the original as closely as possible.  What else needs to be removed?  I don't suppose it is possible to buy a new roof liner (and s/h ones are likely start exhibiting the same problem, if they aren't already), so how easy is it to match the original material?

My understanding is that the pillar trim needs to be removed as well as the seatbelts to get to the roof liner. The lining itself you'll find will pull away quite easily, just remove the screws holding the sun visors and unplug the vanity lights cabling. Now that's as far as I've got with mine, im still yet to arrange the re-trimming of the lining.

I hear its best to go for a cloth material and yes its much better to go for a new one as second hand will probably have shrunk and gone the same fate with sagging. tbh at the moment the lining itself in my car that is bare is a dark grey colour, I actually do like the darker shade on the roof.. but ofcourse the standard cream sun visors stand out against the grey. you can go for a cream cloth material as close to standard if you like.. im still contemplating wether or not to go for a darker grey or black.. it looks quite good tbh. ill get a photo for you mate so you can see!

Update Time!

I've installed some White LED converted switches. Mine originally had just the rear fog light and just the headlight switcher. Now I've got the front fog and headlight adjuster also in white LED. Loving the look.. even though they aren't connected to anything.. hopefully the front Fog switch (which was a pain to find) will be good motivation to grab a set of angel eyes soon!

Before: Stock Orange (Very dull was annoying me)
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/11_zpsa791613d.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/11_zpsa791613d.jpg.html)

After: White LED's
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/22_zps58fad3d2.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/22_zps58fad3d2.jpg.html)

The on indicator I've gone for red.
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/33_zpsa6f8bcd4.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/33_zpsa6f8bcd4.jpg.html)

Loving the fresh vibes in the car. Atm I've ordered my 3 remaining heater control switches which are still yet to be converted to white to finish the look.
I think the white is alot more fresh and modern. Last night I converted my mate's Hyundai Accent speedo to blue LED's and gosh was it annoying to look at!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In other news last night I fiddled with some spare LED strips and hooked them up in a way that they light up the footwells only when the doors open! Loving this DIY mod!

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/44_zpsd25ee39c.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/44_zpsd25ee39c.jpg.html)

Hardest part was finding which wire was which since before I installed them they were a pair of multi coloured LED's.

That's all for now! some more wiring up of LED strips to come! Stay tuned!

Small Update!

Today using a spare Led strip I had lying around, I wired it up illuminate the area under the ashtray as it was looking quite dark and lonely there :P It looks alot brighter on this pic than it really is.. seems my phone cant handle bright light properly! ;)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/DSC_1940111111111111111111111_zpsd1d0db60.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/DSC_1940111111111111111111111_zpsd1d0db60.jpg.html)

Do I need it? Not really.. but I like it and it's now inspired me to put white strips into the door cards so I get a good balance of white and red led lighting around me!

Also as she stands!

Update time!

Some very exciting things have happened since I last updated you all on here.

Firstly I've completed my White LED speedo and switches upgrade. Much much better than the stock dull orange.

I've also put some more lighting around the car.
So as it stands: LED Strips in the front and rear footwells, under the ashtray, around the ignition barrel, in the door cards and also under the door card sills.

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/DSC_2133gggggggggggggg_zps0b83e95a.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/DSC_2133gggggggggggggg_zps0b83e95a.jpg.html)

I've hooked these all up so that when the doors are swung open, the lights come on and turn off again when the doors have been shut.
Love the attention I get at night when the under of my doors light up. I had one guy in a commodore with a priceless expression the other night at a maccas carpark! lol
Gives me a smile everytime I see my cabin and doors light up! Love it!

Next on the cards is a set of Angel eyes and a black roof.

First I'll be ordering the Angel eyes (Approx in the next 24hrs) getting excited for the new look.

The black vinyl roof is an experiment. If I like it, it stays. If I don't too easy.. the Vinyl peels off :P

Thats all for now folks just a bit of an update!

Cheers

Well done .. a lot of hard graft there .. so how did you wire the extra lights in? Off the interior light circuit utilising the door switch or a separate system?
I'm interested in seeing the roof in black as I am tempted myself.

Cheers heaps buddy

I wired them in to the map light centre bulb so whenever that turns on so do the LED Strips. Piece of cake!
Oh yeah? I reckon a black roof would make the car look more streamlined!

Did you consider wiring some up from the 'Bug Eyes' so you have more control of what lights you want to operate?

As for the Black Roof, go for it, but that trend is on it's way out fast, same with the black mags!!!

I primarily went for the middle bulb so that all the LED's turn on and off with the open and close of doors. That was my whole concept. From the bug eyes is a good idea but won't work unless I have keys in ignition whereas with no keys in ignition I can turn the leds on and off st anytime. Even with doors closed.. I just pull the headlight switcher knob!

As for black mags going out of fashion.. Definitely here in Adelaide it's in fashion for all the "cool kids" that do up their cars. Black roof.. Ofcourse we know newer cars like mercs and newer model BMWs and etc have black roofs. Definitely a luxury look I think.

Photo Update

Tonight I had some spare cabling and LED strips lying around so I thought I'dd add some more lighting to the boot. As stock the one bulb design in the back really doesn't give a bright enough output spread light even with my LED strip in that. So onto wiring up two more on each side of the boot.

Photo Update time! - Opelised front V_Grille

BEFORE - With Opel sticker that was really bubbling and looking quite dodgy and annoyed the crap outta me

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/OpelStickerBefore_zpsea00383c.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/OpelStickerBefore_zpsea00383c.jpg.html)

AFTER - With Opel Keyring which originally was too bulky so I DIY grinded the size down to half so it fit a bit more flush.
Very pleased with my results.

I went with white back for something different!

Opelised the front grill DIY style.
No more cheap sticker! Rather a very humbling DIY metal opel badge that I literally put my blood and sweat into making!
Worth every burnt finger (As I was grinding the metal back so it was a bit more slim in thickness the grinder made the metal too hot to touch)
Love it!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've gotta say I really love the transformed look. I had my fingers crossed that they wouldn't look cheap and they definitely aren't.
The black backing and clear lenses make the look for a much younger/more stanced car. And I love being different to most cars on the road so I like the new look.

Will need to install whiter bulbs in Fog Lights and also LED the side indicators (I believe you need a relay for this to work properly in the indicators). I've already put white LED Parkers but at some point down the track may look into installing HID's and CCFL rings. For the time being I can live with both! Im not looking for "OH MY GOD thats mind blasting!!!".. Im looking for "Wow thats nice" ;) and so far thats what I've been getting!

Thats all for now folks.
Stay tuned for progress as always!

Mate...

Looking heaps better, but anything is better than the Original Out-dated Lights...

I suggest you buy some Osram whiter bulbs, to fit in the Headlights and Fog Lights...

I also suggest fitting LED's in the front and side indicators, but you'll need a special relay
for the indicators to flash at normal speed, but that's cheap and easy to do...

Forget installing HID's and CCFL rings, many have has issues with that business...

As you say, definitely better than stock lights. I think the black backing with clear lenses really makes the car look younger and doesn't look out of place on the car!

Yes my plan is to get rid of the crappy dull stock bulbs with something whiter. Maybe crystal vision.. But I do want function over form for the main beam!

Yep I already have repeaters as LED but yet to do the angel eye indicators as orange LED too. Do you have the relay for the front indicators?

but those options really are bright and both can be seen at a distance. especially HID's. When correctly adjusted to not dazzle oncoming cars, the output of light is amazing. As long as you dont install cheap ones I imagine reliability of them isn't too bad. You get what you pay for when it comes to electrics.

HID's fitted and my gosh what a difference! I never wanted to be an annoyance on the road to other drivers but with the angel eyes fitted.. the beam was so bad, I could barely see at all and especially in the hills where there is no lighting whatsoever. So in summary it was dangerous driving at night. Now its much better and I've adjusted them so as to not blind people. Im also on the lookout for calibra headlight adjuster motors which with my factory switch lets me adjust the height of the lights. Very rare but im sure weill be very handy!

Some before and afters.

Keep in mind the the stock light output my phone couldn't pick up the light beam properly because they were too dim.. and with the HID's they were too bright for my phone.
But you get an idea ;)

Im much much happier on the roads now. I can actually see where Im going. One of the best mods to date!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Photo's of my latest mod. Excuse the shocking quality as it was low light and the shadows from my hands.
Finally learnt how to wire a switch into my car to power these $4 Ebay DRL's i bought a few years ago.
Not very functional but I mostly wanted to put them there since it'll be something different. I would've preferred to put them more towards the outside edge of the front bar but sadly opel didn't make any room for me. So in the middle opening of the grille they went!

Opinions?

Yeah they are Day Time Running lights.
The more I look at them the more I think they are out of place on this car. Plus being illegal basically, I don't think I want to risk driving with them around.
It is looking like it will come off soon. It was mostly an experiment for me to learn how things like this work to get wired up to a switch.

Wise move :) We seem in UK to have them on every other bloody car now, yet to see a single vehicle they look good on.

And as for mine looking bright.. Its only in night time photos they seem bright mate. During the day they are sh*t and can't notice them. But the handy thing about them being so dim is that police will never have anything to say because they aren't seen as distracting :p

She now has a semi major coolant leak from somewhere :'( Suspected water pump since the leak is from somewhere central of the engine bay from within. The radiator definitely isn't at fault since I installed a new one 3 months ago. Looks like a big operation is needed. But will be taking a good look during the day time since last I looked was at night time with my phone's camera flash when I had the car on ramps.

For something a little different. I found a few pictures of my first car. My 1979 Honda Accord 5spd manual. 1 owner before me at the time and only 78,000 k's on the clock. Twas a great car to learn manual in :P

Very sad to say goodbye to my best friend! RIP - Diagnosis, motor died.

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/DSC_2813111111_zps0ede42b8.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/DSC_2813111111_zps0ede42b8.jpg.html)

My calibra gave me a smile every time I started it up and took it for a drive and was the best car I've ever had. I loved it more and more with each day.
I fixed its major coolant leak due to a leaking hose and after a short lap around the block, a loud bang and a rattle 5x louder than a diesel.. she doesn't turn over anymore. Suspected piston failure. RAA confirmed this, and so did 3 of the best mechanically minded family members I have.

Im having a good hard think what to do from here. Either sell it as it is, drop in a reconditioned engine down the track or wreck it for parts.

I know I'd die for this car but I'm also thinking down the track. Im considering all options for my future with this car. I guess it all depends how much I'm willing to spend and how long I'm willing to keep it running. I have seriously considered a daily in the meantime till I sort out my cali.

The new car is most probably a definite but for now will be a surprise. Any guesses what it might be? and no hints or clues will be given. I shall update as details go.

Oh dear.  Very sorry to hear about what happened.  The question has to be, do you know what caused the engine failure?  Was it the aftermath of losing coolant when the hoses leaked, but still driving?  The body has got to be in good enough condition to make it worth dropping another engine there...

Sorry to read your news ... absolutely and definitely a good looking Calibra and 1000 miles away from scrapping or breaking I would have thought.
Strip down the existing motor and see what's what and if it's repairable .. if it's totalled see about getting a decent second hand unit.

Good luck

Many cars are scrapped because the bodywork starts to look really tatty, or various components fail whatever roadworthiness tests apply and it is 'beyond economic repair' to replace them.  So many scrapped cars have engines which have many miles left in them.  You should be able to pick up a good replacement engine reasonably cheaply.  If you replace like with like, the cost of fitting a replacement engine shouldn't be too high and you can have the replacement engine fully serviced before you drop it in to the car.  Only if you want to upgrade to a different engine does it become a bit more expensive.

It does look to be in superb condition for its age (but then, so does your Calibra).  Certainly exceptional for a 'barn find'!  What model is it ce, ge, or te?  What engine has it got in it?
Compared to a Calibra, it's a bit like a 'barge', but should be very comfortable.  Mercedes tended to be much too softly sprung.

Oh guys it definitely is a land barge but it's a welcome change for that swagger factor hahaa ;)
And no no by no means did I go out searching for this specifically.. I just came across it and new for the price and condition I couldn't give it up. Mercs go forever and are years ahead of other cars it's age.

As for the cali.. It'll sorely be missed. But I slept on it tonight and I think I came to a conclusion.. It will be my long term project to put an engine in and for it to be my weekend drive!

Like the look of your Merc but you definitely need to get a new engine in your Calibra.  Mercedes are too big and wallowy.  They definitely don't have the grin factor or rarity value of a Calibra.

Yes definitely not the rareity of the calibra and that always is awesome!
Well being a full time student and working part time too.. time is ALWAYS short and money too. But will see how I go. Would be great to have the cali as my weekend cruiser! we'll see how it goes.

For now the Mercs German charm has me inlove! I do miss my manual cali soooo much but the smoothness and refinedness of the Merc has me mesmerised.

(My two beasts) <3 + note mum put a chrome tip on the exhaust of the benz without consulting on the way home from when I picked up the cali. She told me she was getting groceries hahaa I swear mum is worse than me sometimes)
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/CAM00077777777777_zps962aad8e.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/CAM00077777777777_zps962aad8e.jpg.html)

(The very first time I saw my calibra when it was ready to be driven out with its new engine in place.)
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/CAM00011111111_zps2c45c5a2.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/CAM00011111111_zps2c45c5a2.jpg.html)

She needed a new engine dropped in because the old one shat itself in the bottom end.
So a bout 2 months in $700 later I found one @ 105,000kms on the clock.
I paid $700 labour at the mechanics that had the engine but they swapped engines for me, fitted a new clutch, waterpump and timing belt and a radiator flush.
My parents shouted me the $700 so the rest totaled me to $1500 which I'm stoked about! The labour was given a 3 month warranty which is part of the reason my parents wanted me to go with that option even though my Adelaide Opel mates were happy to jump over and help with the engine swaps.

She feels like a brand new car again especially with the feeling of the new clutch and Im convinced the new engine (even though its exactly the same X20xev model) has more torque.

Altho the Cali is no Merc :c In one sense I miss the Merc's refinedness and class. I miss its Ironing out of all imperfections on the road and its comfy seats but that car is for cruising long distances. The Cali will be my daily run around. I love it because its different to most cars on the road and most people don't know what they are because they are so rare these days. The 2 door, very streamlined look I love and the bass in that car from its sound system I installed made me smile everytime.. and so did its muffler.
Now speaking of the Merc my mum is using it as her daily as she doesn't have a car. So im glad that it will be driven on the odd occasion that mum goes out so I know it won't rust into the ground at the back of the driveway.

Anyways Glad to have the cali back but Im now faced with having to mod her up again. As I said earlier I wasn't planning on resurrecting the cali so soon.. I had taken out my whole sound system and LED's.

TO DO LIST:
-5000k HID's (my last set one of the HID globes blew before the car broke down. I had 6000k last time.. a bit too blue for my liking)
-Need to install LED strips in footwells and under doors (This will be for the second time as I took all the strips out and installed them into the benz)
-Headunit (New one Installed)
-Front 6" speakers (old ones are still there but the cali has a leak in the door window sills somewhere and the back of my front door speakers were rusted in patches.. new speakers bought yet to install)
-Rear 6x9's (Took old ones out and put in the sister's camry but that was before the cali was back on the road so I'm currently using my sister's old clarion 6x9's.. temporary till I buy another set of Type S Alpine 6x9's)
-Need to find another sub (since the active sub I had in the cali.. its amp broke down so need to find a replacement as the replacement for the active sub Autobahn gave me was a bigger active sub that resides in the Benz) problem with subs in the cali is the boot aint very deep so will be trial and error to see what fits. So sad without my bass.
-Bought a spare front bar. Will be transplanting all the good bits onto it as my current one has a bit of annoying previous damage.
-Need to order chrome plated indicator bulbs for the angel eyes that flash amber
-Need to Gloss spray the third brake light cover.

Thats it for now guys and gals. The Cali is back better than ever and Im keen for more mods to get her back up to scratch!

Cheers for reading.

It's funny I said the same thing about you being from South Australia in my other post :P
Yeah I am entirely new to the Calibra scene, being that it is my first car and I've only owned it since December 21st 2013.
Didn't know we had a facebook page but I will have a check for it now..

Cheers mate, I hope so too!

Update!

So the cali is back on the road after needing new Valve stem seals. No more smoke emitting from the exhaust! yayy!

Here are a few pics the arvo that I got it home two days ago. Straight after a wash! Upon washing I really can notice it needs a good polish!

As she stands! 07/03/14

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/22222_zps35aeed82.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/22222_zps35aeed82.jpg.html)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recently got a hold of another bumper. Mostly because there is some previous damage on my current one and even though I fiber glassed it and painted it it started to crack and show again so onto the new bumper we go. I will need to transplant some goodies and also it could use a good polish. But it will be worth it.

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/111111_zps037b08fa.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/111111_zps037b08fa.jpg.html)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To Do List:

-Sub + amp
-Tint (Old one faded so need a new set. Will go to the same dude that tinted my Merc)
-5000k HID's (Old set blew and wasn't reliable anyway)
-White LED strips for footwells under door courtesy lighting.
-White LED bulbs throughout the car again.
-Fix new bumper (I need to research how the bumper strips come off as the strips on my current bumper are in better knick than the ones on the new bumper. The new bumper also needs a very good polish)

To Do Eventually List:
-New Rotors all round.
-Fix the raspy exhaust.. really annoys me. (I have a muffler on it but after 3000rpm it gets very tinny and farty a sound)

Thanks for reading guys and gals.

Thanks mate, and that's for sure! Hopefully I can find out what's going on with my aircon here, with enough searching I'm sure someone has a solution. :)

Think I have the same issue on mine, I'll mostly likely show you at a meet sometime. It's the front end exhaust that's causing all the noise for me..

I think it's a very common Calibra rattle raspy exhaust but I never really looked into it. Will hope to resolve it one day!

After 2 weeks of waiting for my mechanics to fix the coolant leak, my cali is back on the road stronger than ever! :') but I do have to fix the slightly seeping oil from the edges of the rocker cover (Me thinks a sealant glue again like last time.. Last year I used something similar and it held for about a year might have to do the same.. the mechanics had used an aftermarket cover gasket and it isn't holding the oil in)

But anyways, here's a few pics of my recent progress.
- Orange bulbs to Chrome plated that flash amber for moar stealth and style.. the orange bulbs were a sore eye for me :c muuuch better now!

-------------------------------------------------

Installed my 12" Kicker Slimline sub and Amp - Im in love with my bass!! I used to have a US Audio active sub.. but this sh*ts all over it and I haven't even worn it in properly xD

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/20140405_172911_zpsa8dcaf2b.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/20140405_172911_zpsa8dcaf2b.jpg.html)

The sub I bought it because it fits perfectly under the parcel shelf and behind the spare wheel that pokes out from the floor.
I didn't want anything that will overkill so one sub is plenty for me.. enough to give me a bass that will make me smile and my passnegers smile like giddy kids xD
-------------------------------------------------

One of my globes in my Calibra Aussie edition third brake light burnt out so today I was trying to see how it comes off and what globes they use. I haven't looked into this much yet but I hear through my mate Eddey that there are two screws coming out from the bottom. Might need to spend some time in the holidays sussing this out and I want to upgrade to an LED strip if possible/Easy enough.

--------------------------------------------------
BONUS!

I got spotted by a fellow MCM member and after they posted it on our facebook group another member went and photochopped it!
I can't help but drool over how good it looks (might be a tad low for practicality) but this has given me a dream to one day lower my cali.. gotta convince my parents tho :P

Photo Update time! Its been a while since I've written about my calibra but here I go.

First it was LED strips into the footwells and under the doors and in the boot!

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/11_zps69fee0a5.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/11_zps69fee0a5.jpg.html)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/44_zpsa218c5cd.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/44_zpsa218c5cd.jpg.html)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/55_zps68b548f1.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/55_zps68b548f1.jpg.html)

Im just loving the night life with all the lighting! (My phone camera makes it seem brighter than it is but I love it! GAHHH <3 )

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next I went on a Dyno Run (Was complimentary since on the day that MCM Adelaide held a dyno day, a bearing on a roller gave way and gave me incorrect results)
To my delight my cali ran a consistent 84KW at the wheels. not bad for a 20 year old car! (100kw from factory)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/77_zps72777a32.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/77_zps72777a32.jpg.html)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/66_zps1de95c2d.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/66_zps1de95c2d.jpg.html)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next I went and fitted an original factory bonnet light! Opel had already put a spot for it and all! (Probably incase people break down middle of the night)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/13_zps2f0a7111.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/13_zps2f0a7111.jpg.html)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/14_zps1402c70e.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/14_zps1402c70e.jpg.html)

I do need to fit an LED in there pronto!!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next one of the bulbs in my third brake light blew so I took it as an opportunity to fix the loose bonnet fit and also put in an LED strip instead of the halogen globes for a more modern look.
I do need a brighter LED strip tho, this current one doesn't really cut it during the day sadly. at night not too bad.
Again excuse the low res shots! damn phone!

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/8_zps10e1af1e.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/8_zps10e1af1e.jpg.html)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next here are a few photos from an Opel meet. (first 2 photos credit goes to Kevin Tria Photography.. last 2 photos credit to my phone that I didn't realise was on a 2mp quality setting sorry bout that guys)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/10259747_10202856012700171_1306776354900173774_n_zps6e401a2c.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/10259747_10202856012700171_1306776354900173774_n_zps6e401a2c.jpg.html)

I managed to find a mate with a calibra and got him to come along. L plater for now so dad came along too :P )

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/15_zps40bdfc2d.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/15_zps40bdfc2d.jpg.html)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The more astute of you would have noticed in the above pictures I no longer have the Facelift bumper. I scored an earlier model bumper without the V-Grille.
Dont get me wrong, I love the chrome accenting but a mate talked me into trying the bumper.
Plus I had some previous damage that was showing thru the paint which was annoying me so it was fresh new bumper time!

So with a bumper change I thought I'd do HID's too while I was at it.
This was round 2 for HID's. my first set were Ebay ones and didn't last and weren't reliable sadly.
I went for Philips 5000k 35W and im a happy chappy atm!

Left stock bulb. Right fresh 5000k goodness!

Cheers as do I. I find the chrome grille somehow ruins the clean look. I wish their facelift models weren't just the addition of the v grille but rather changes in the bumper's styling or something!

Mate...

It now looks like a 92 Model, from the front, seeing that the V-Grille is gone...

But that's just my opinion... I too went without a V-Grille at one stage, and never again...

Quite so. Chrome is too 80's . Old style looks way better.

Me too - much cleaner and less 'cluttered'...  The ------V------ is superfluous decoration...

I know what you mean Eddey. It did take some getting used to without the V grille to be honest but now Im a much bigger fan of the clean look without the grille. to be honest the V part just stands out and breaks the clean bumper in my opinion.

I love how it is currently. but I still have the old bumper, so If I were to one day want it back on its a bumper change away :P

My calibra lads and gals. I need opinions and thoughts/suggestions what custom numberplate to get. I want to ask you guys because ya'll may be able to choose a word for me that encaptulates the calibra and makes people go yep, that suits the car and is clever.
At the moment Im tossing around ideas. If I can't find anything worthwhile I'd rather not get something silly just for the sake of getting one because you do have to pay yearly for them.

I'll upload below a few photo shops of the words I've thought of. I live in South Australia, max letters and numbers you can fit are 7 max.

First for the Calibra.

SAMARAI - So firstly my name is Sama and its also a play on words with Samurai and SAMARAI is also my forum name throughout the internet.
(I'm deciding against this kind of because I want something that is about the car not really about me Ideally)
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/SAMARAI_zps5c676434.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/SAMARAI_zps5c676434.jpg.html)

CALIBRO - Play on words with the model of the car being Calibra. thoughts?
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/CALIBRO_zps61c49315.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/CALIBRO_zps61c49315.jpg.html)

CAL1BRA - Think its corny to put the cars model as a numberplate?
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/cali2_zps5d887369.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/cali2_zps5d887369.jpg.html)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

My Benz Im pretty set for. I wanted to get TITANIC but its already taken so here are the next best thing.

TITAN1C
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/T1TAN1C_zps59ed82cd.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/T1TAN1C_zps59ed82cd.jpg.html)

TYTANYK
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/TYTANYC_zps71af7d7b.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/TYTANYC_zps71af7d7b.jpg.html)

Thoughts especially for my calibra's numberplate would be awesome. cheers guys and girls.

Calibra gets my vote! How does your system work then? Over here you get what's on the car unless you buy a 'private' plate but, even then they are not as good by a mile as what you can do!

Over here the numberplate registration options are quite vast and aren't too pricey.
Over here you get stock randomly assigned plate numbers like the white one I currently have but some people elect to purchase a more premium plate. many to choose from.
Depending which you do choose.. some are once off payments but you are restricted with amount of letters and you must put atleast one number in after the state's logo which looks a bit naff.

The premium one im after is all free up to you for how many numbers or letters you want.
6 letters/numbers is paid annually $225 and 7 letter/numbers is $255 a year. so not too bad hey!
you can choose different backing and letter colours.. I'd go with silver text on a black background!

Howdy Calibra Brothers and Sisters!
I need opinions. White or black trim? I always was curious if the colour coded trim would look better than stock black or not.
So the other day I plastidipped my door and bumper trim. Im undecided which look I like better.
What's your thoughts?

I reckon black is classy and breaks up the white, but white makes it look sleeker/sheeker!

Before (Black - Stock)

After (White - Plasti-dip)

im still a bit undecided black vs white.
I did contemplate the lower skirts too but I thought it would draw unwanted attention to them let along having to clean them all the time since black hides it better hahha

Turf install as footwell floor mats.
Photo Update time!!

About 2 hours ago I finished the install of turf in the front and rear footwells acting as replacements of standard universal floor mats I had.

Gotta say im more than pleased how it turned out, best 5 hours and $59 spent ever!
I always do like being different.. not just with cars but in everything and when a few mates with utes tossed the idea around of getting turf along their ute's trays I got thinking that well I don't have a ute.. but next best thing was the footwells! Probably the only calibra in the world with this mod! now thats MAAAAD! :P

Enjoy some before, during and after shots!
Comment your thoughts, always glad to hear people's opinions. good or bad! might not be everyone's cup of tea but I love it.. my phone photos don't do it justice but enjoy!

For now take care, till the next installment of SAMARAI's Calibra! (that is if I don't plant flowers and play put put golf on my turf now) xD
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before and after!
(Can you see the face in the left footwell? I shat bricks when I saw it thru my phone as I took the shot! hahaha)

Getting round the pedals so they dont impinge when using the clutch for example was the hardest part but nothing this persian beast can't handle :P

hope ya'll like it!
day pics to come soon!

Cheers for reading!

Hahaa nahh no way mate all good! Omg Nah it made my day man, was hilarious as. I've got a good sense of humour I knew what you meant! XD

But you've got it right bro, what easy making it look like a pro job with no carpet showing on the edges or the turf unrolling out from under the side trim.
Defs not the factory look but maybe went for surprise factor when passengers open the doors :p

Looks very slick and tidy.

Stick some ivy growing out the bonnet? Maybe a little herb garden in the glove box and some rosebushes would come up nice out the wheel arches and a potted cactus in the exhaust pipe ?

(Still on the turf theme :) )

Photo Update Time!

Here's an update on the latest mods to the cali.

-Reverted to stock headlights with Angel Eye clear lenses.
-Installed Headlight level adjuster motors
-Installed Cup holder
-Replaced semi-broken seatbelt pre-tensioner.

----------------------------------------------------

Firstly here are some shots of the last day she stood with her angel eye headlights before they came off.
(Gotta love white cars, It needed a wash and a polish but somehow in these photos it looks mint) ;)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/20140618_1538381111111111111111111111111_zps545b042a.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/20140618_1538381111111111111111111111111_zps545b042a.jpg.html)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/20140618_153906111111111111111111111_zps21838859.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/20140618_153906111111111111111111111_zps21838859.jpg.html)

-----------------------------------------------------
So to explain the method behind the madness, the sonar projector housings were sh*t house and as a result the projected low beam pattern of light on the road and the beam cut off was so inconsistent and poor that even with HID's I could barely see the road ahead.
I have had these angel eyes about a year now and in that time.. every night drive was soo frustrating because for one I couldn't see where I was going and two I had to have the left beam adjusted way down so that I wouldn't blind cars driving on the side of me.

So enough was enough. With the encouragement of a friend, he helped me open up the Angel eyes to see if we could retrofit the stock calibra projectors into it. Sadly no matter how we tried we couldn't do it.

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/20140625_1650041111111111111_zps1a3bfbbf.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/20140625_1650041111111111111_zps1a3bfbbf.jpg.html)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/20140625_18312911111111111111_zps7f0469d0.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/20140625_18312911111111111111_zps7f0469d0.jpg.html)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So after about 3 hours of fussing around trying to get the much better spread of light enabled stock projectors to fit in, I resorted back to the stock headlights but replaced the lens with the Angel eye clear lens and this is how it turned out! Pretty stoked!

(Excuse the glare, I took a quick few snaps today when the weather cleared up for a bit.)
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/20140626_14533911111111111111_zps89663fce.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/20140626_14533911111111111111_zps89663fce.jpg.html)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/20140626_145303111111111111_zps693962cd.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/20140626_145303111111111111_zps693962cd.jpg.html)

I also have a few degrees of control over the vertical position of the lights from the original headlight adjuster motors I gott off a calibre from you pull it. So cool to have.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Now my eyes do need adjusting to the chrome look but so far Its a nice change, somehow freshens up the front end I think.
Now I'll bring your attention to the start of my problems.

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/20140626_16195811111111111_zps76b93c90.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/20140626_16195811111111111_zps76b93c90.jpg.html)

As you see here on the right hand side of the headlight is the high beam reflector housing and just before putting the clear lens on I thought I’d use some wax and grease remover to clean up the residual dust that was on the bottom surface, nek minut the chrome came off as I wiped it. I guess it was a very cheap/think/crap layer of coated chrome.

IM NOT TOO FUSSED! To be honest, this is a small trade off!
True I’ve lost the black backing, I’ve lost the front foggies and halos but I don’t care.. the light output, spread and shape of the cut off is 1000 times better!
Plus the stock projectors have a switch per projector that lets you adjust if you want the light to cut off perfectly horizontal or have a Flick up at the left hand side. I DIDN’T KNOW FROM FACTORY WE ALL HAD ACCESS TO THIS SWITCH!! Even with HID’s right now I have total control over the cut off of the light and not fearful of blinding oncoming motorists and people im driving behind or over taking.

I now have some thinking to do, wether I want to source another stock chrome housing and replace the housing that’s turned yellow, or I can paint what I have black, but my problem lies here that the high beams are refelectors so I can’t really paint those black and lose the use of the high beams.

Another possible mod is to go and install the angel eye headlight halos into my current stock ones. Now Ideally I’d like to go CFL rings or something brighter as the ones in my old angel eye set were so dim.. but I guess they were designed that way to act as parkers and ideally be more legal for on road use. Not sure if I want to risk cop attention with putting bright halos, my old halos might be the fix, plus that’s MCM DIY style ftw :P

I am also planning on retrofitting my angel eye front foggies into the stock headlights im currently using. And hopefully putting HID’s into those aswell. I wouldn’t really use them as low beams but more as DRL’s :P

--------------------------------------------------------

Finally I installed a cup holder. Damn opel for not giving me one in the first place, but its all sorted now!

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/20140626_1659501111111111111_zps9748bab7.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/20140626_1659501111111111111_zps9748bab7.jpg.html)

------------------------------------------------------------

And lastly I scored an un molested original calibra seatbelt pre tensioner.
From about the first few months of owning the cali, a cousin leant onto my drivers side one and broke it. I did fix it but it never was the same. Finally now we’re all good!

Here’s one of the old one. Guess the 20 year old Euro plastic has done well in the Aussie heat!

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/20140626_170036111111111111_zps744323b0.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/20140626_170036111111111111_zps744323b0.jpg.html)

(ps a sneaky self plug in of Adelaide’s Marty and Moog approved, printed, cut and sold .Adelaide extension sticker)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

To Do list:

-Contemplating going back to black door and bumper trim. (Its plasti dipped white currently.. can just peel off)
-Look into mirror upgrade (mine is perfectly fine but loose so a tad bump and I have to re-adjust. Very annoying)
-Sort out something for the head lights. (Either find a stock headlight housing to swap over or paint current ones black)
-Contemplate installing halos
-Fit the Angel Eye front foggies into the blank fog light spot of the stock headlights.
-Replace cream interior with black interior (pillars, parcel shelf etc)
-Buy Air-horn (Loud one)

Thanks for reading guys and gals!

I have the same rubbish sonar lights as u and ripping them out is high on my "to do" list!

Ur problem with ur mirror loose, not sure but probably a small Allen key will tighten it up?

Do it man, you will thank yourself so much after going back to the stock projectors and with hids it looks mint! I will NEVER go back to the sonar set, they aren't even half decent.

Great idea, I forgot I noticed that there was an alen key type notch whilst sussing the calibra at the local wrecker yesterday.
Thanks mate will suss.

Thanks dude, will definitely have to give it a shot. It's pretty frustrating to get it back into that "perfect" spot when a light bump aligns it out of line. Lol

Replaced tired numberplate lamp covers.
Tried bleaching them over the years but it still wasn't perfect.
Now it's heaps better.

Last night I transplanted my old bump strips.
Thinking of going back to black.
Black vs white. Thoughts?

- My Custom Factory Foglight Replica Install -

Yesterday with the help of a mate, I retrofitted BMW projectors in the blank fog light spot in my headlights.
My intention was to use them as DRL's for my own safety, driving in overcast weather and to stop people pulling out into me at intersections and when merging lanes etc.

I was stoked that with little modification that the BMW projector fitted although there wasn't much room to work with.

I was scratching my head as to what to do, and I was trying to be delicate whilst drilling the blanks out. Bloody thick pieces of sh*t!
Stoked with the result, looks factory and doesn't scream "Cops look at me I'm modified".

Currently I have them wired up to a wireless remote that I can wirelessly adjust brightness, and make them flash/strobe (more of a fun trick to show at meets) :P

--------------------------------------------

To Do List:
-Clean up white plastidip residue around bump strips and re-forever black. (Decided to go back to black for now) Im secretly enjoying the factory freshened look ;)
-Adjust headlights (low beams and high beams aren't aligned vertically properly yet)
-New tyres, but as for 18" rims I've always wanted, for now I'm saving up for the colourcoding paint job for my Merc.
-Detail the cali

From foggy clear repeaters to Smoked.
My eyes still need to adjust to the change but I'm convinced that the clear ones on a white calibra win so I'll be hitting the aged clear ones with bleach to see if it will clear them up.

I do mostly night driving and make it a habit before really long night trips to check oil levels before and after. Old car like old person needs more attention. Best not to cook the engine ;)

My mighty mod of the night,
Middle sun visor for the few frustrating times when the driver and passenger visors can't block around the rear view mirror.

Inspired from my merc that has one! Donated from a merc from U-pull-it! (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/09/12/udeje4u9.jpg)

Photo Update!
Howdy fellow calibra club.com fans. Here's my latest update on mods.

-Factory Halogen boot brake light swap to Astra G LED brake light.
-Interior trim swap from cream to black
-Installed a switch to my custom fitted projectors in the blank fog light spots in my headlights
-Also installed a Merc w124 middle sunvisor. (Inspired from my own w124 merc)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Long story short, the factory eye level boot brake light had 4 halogen globes illuminating the red lens. A bulb blew and once I found they were halogen bulbs I went for an LED alternative. Turns out the Astra G brake light strip fit in perfectly. Winning!

(My phone couldn't focus properly because the LED strip is so bright. But now I really feel it modernises the car very subtly over the dated looking factory 4 halogen bulb setup)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next up was the interior trim swap that I was had to put off for about 5 months because I have been so busy but Im so glad I got round to it.
The cream upper half of the interior really looked out of place against the black of the dash and darker grey of the seats. I managed to luckily find a full set of black trim at my local u-pull-it from an earlier model calibra.

------

Now the earlier model calibras ofcourse, had matching black visors but didn't have the vanity mirrors or lights in them from what I can gather. From that I can tell, only the later post facelift model calibra sun visors however did, and since I didn't want to lose the lights in my visors I decided to die my visors black/charcoal to match my recent interior trim swap. Stoked with the results!!

If you notice I also have installed a w124 Mercedes Benz middle sun visor. Inspired from my own merc, I decided it may come in handy to have this as sometimes the pesky sun still manages to blind you from between both the passenger and drivers visors even if they are both down. I just cut the foam visor to fit and screwed it into the headliner. DIY ftw!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally I got round to installing a switch to operate my custom fitted projectors which I fitted to the blank front fog light spots in my headlights.

Bottom whiter beam (5000k HID's with flat cut off)
Top bluer beam (Diamond Vision halogen bulbs I had lying around)

Turns out im fairly certain my mate and I installed the custom projectors upside down... oooops! so I have to get round to turning them the right way around and hopefully order some HID's for them also. I want to run them as DRL's for daytime driving safety!

As she stands!
I'm going to leave you with a few photos from the other night.
Cheers for reading. Feel free to leave thoughts and feed back :P
Cheers

Photo Update!
Howdy fellow calibra club.com fans. Here's my latest update on mods.

-Factory Halogen boot brake light swap to Astra G LED brake light.
-Interior trim swap from cream to black
-Installed a switch to my custom fitted projectors in the blank fog light spots in my headlights
-Also installed a Merc w124 middle sunvisor. (Inspired from my own w124 merc)

Hi SAMARAI,

The boot brake light swap is on my to-do list. I've been thinking about which LED's I could put in there as I only have one bulb working at the moment.
Can I have a few more specifics about the "Astra G", like the model year and also, how easy was it to wire in? I should be able to find one a wrecker in Cairns.

Love what you've done with the fog lights too. I was wanting to do that years ago but had no idea how to go about it, I even took it to Metro Holden were I got the car and they had no idea either, typical. Too bad I don't live in Adelaide anymore, would have been great to hang with a fellow Cali devotee! I'll read a bit more detail on your fog lights and I might have a few more queries for you.

Cheers in anticipation.

Mate, is the Astra brake light from one with a spoiler or without?

Stay tuned to this space, done some exciting work lately. Been meaning to update for a few weeks now!

The one I used isn't the spoiler astra G light but the one at the top of the rear window. Fit straight in and I used double sided tape to keep it in place. Hasn't missed a beat.
Hope it helps bro!

No worries mate.
Have a look at your local wrecker, should be plenty to choose from.

Photo Update!

I have been meaning to update this thread for a while. A few goodies to catch you all up on but to start with I present:
My cali with her custom DIY Angel eyes.

They are COB LED rings and I have hooked them up to a wireless controller so i can turn them on/off and strobe/flash with varying speeds and patterns.

I gutted my old aftermarket angel eye headlights and only kept the clear lenses.
I then installed the rings to the parker wiring of my stock headlights and replaced the stock lens with the clear lens and voila here we go!
Part of the reason for the whole shenanigans is the sonar angel eye projectors are sh*t house and the halos were lit by the sh*ttiest smallest x2 led's so during the day time you couldn't see them at all. Now, no problems hahah

Better photos to come soon!

Photo Update!

Just yesterday I treated my cali to new shoes.

-18" Motovatr Rims
(2nd hand off an MCM friend.. A temporary till I save up for a really nice set of 18's one day. The more I look at these rims though the more I fall in love with them)

Here are some photos of the progression of the rims on my cali.

Photo 1: Stock 15" Calibra rims

Photo 2: Next I had some 2nd hand ROH 17" rims (A desperate set to get just anything bigger than the 15" stocks. Had them for bit over a year)

18" rims are cool, but to keep the same rolling radius, to avoid affecting the gearing or wheel clearances, you need to use a much lower profile tyre, typically 215R18/35.  This is fine on a race track, or good quality roads, but on the pot-holed roads we have in the UK they can be a nightmare.

I've cracked two sets of 17" rims, shod with 215R17/40s, on pot-holes and had to have two wheels on a third set straightened after being damaged on a single pot-hole in Essex.  :(  One problem is that some light-weight after-market alloys appear to be made of slightly softer alloy than OEM alloys.

They also make for a harsher ride and, if I remember South Australia's roads, they're pretty close to worst in the country, not for pot holes, Far North Queensland tops the list there but for just being rough patchwork strips of bitumen mainly due to constant repairs of burst water pipes due to the weird soil properties there. Having said that, I've not lived in SA for over 13 years.

Yessir atm I am running that same 215 35R18 atm and its almost not that much different to the way my 17's felt on the roads. If anything is a little less harsher I don't know how that works haha.

Yes I have heard of people cracking bigger rims and South Australia doesn't really have great roads but I always drive cautiously anyways and avoid pot holes in the roads and drive slowly when entering exiting car parks and driveways where the road dips.
but yes you are right, some rim patterns being knock offs and what not can be very weak in nature yes!
I hope these aren't too bad!

Thats right man, South Australia's roads are sh*t house but after a while you learn most of the imperfections in the roads and know how to avoid them! yeah there are always road repairs here but not too bad.
I always drive cautiously on my almost 20 year old calibra.. gotta look after such a classic and not only to drive slow to save the rims but also the rest of the mechanical components on the car. An old car is like an old man.. isn't as spriteful in recovery as its youth :P

On roads you know it's easier to avoid potholes, or at least approach them slowly.  The difficulty is that potholes often appear on roads you think you know, or existing potholes suddenly get much worse.  Road repairs is that they are often poor quality patches, rather than proper repairs.  In this country frost can cause patched and potholed roads to deteriorate rapidly.  The real problem is sharp-edged holes larger than the length of the tyre in contact with the road.  :(

Right you are mate, the continued aging of our roads by the sounds of it anywhere in the world really poses challenges to those of us with nice cars out there :C drive safe!

oh thanks a mil mate!
yessir, lowering her a bit really would set her off. Maybe someday soon ;) for now I can live with the stock height.. calibras are streamlined cars after all once being the world's most aerodynamic car :P

So sadly this happened! :C

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/1_zpscf83fc23.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/1_zpscf83fc23.jpg.html)

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/3_zpsb8ef91d3.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/3_zpsb8ef91d3.jpg.html)

So basically I managed to lose control of the car heading to work one Saturday morning in the hills and I managed to mount this dirt wall on all 4 tyres which had a rock ledge as seen in the next photo.

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/4_zpscc71146d.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/4_zpscc71146d.jpg.html)

Taking the half torn bumper off, it turned out I had managed lower chassis damage and from the landing had bent the suspension/strut/control arm and bent all the radiator supports and everything. Engine turned over and all was fine but basically the front right tyre was resting against the guard and was basically burning rubber as I limped it to safety where I towed it home.

(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/THESAMARAI/5_zpsecacae34.jpg) (http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/THESAMARAI/media/5_zpsecacae34.jpg.html)

It was very saddening to see my cali broken like this but im moreso glad  that I live to tell the tale. I was quite close to rolling the car and if it happened a little ways down the road I may have landed myself at the bottom of a cliff.

My cali was about a week later announced as un-repairable write off. RIP.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My first thought was ok now I can try something new. I contemplated many different model cars but In the end I managed to convince myself to get another calibra.

Not my first choice in colour but glad to have a donor cali. Currently am in the process of putting all the best bits into the new cali.
To follow my progress on the new cali click on the link: http://www.clubcalibra.com/show-off-your-car!/samarai's-'91-red-bute-from-australia!-p/

I agree fully with you in gorge road.
No this was on old Norton summit road in the wet you.
Not particularly a bad stretch of road but I should have gone slower.

I know that road well it's not far from where I lived. Me and a mate used to drive it pretty fast at night (so you could see oncoming headlights and slow down. Not much room for error there. Great pub at the top where the old and new roads meet. Norton Summit always was (and still is) where I'd like to have a property. Except during bushfire season!

Where the old and new meet.. The crash happened not 30 seconds heading down old Norton summit road. Not even at a sharp corner or anything, still can't remember exactly what happened as it happened so quickly.
Yeah such a nice end of town though.

Very sorry to see such a lovely example of a Calibra come to an end like this, especially after all the great work you put in to it.  :'(

About the only positive note is that you must have gone almost as far with that project as you could - a bit like building a model railway, building it is always more satisfying than playing trains on it once it's finished.  Now you can start over and do it even better!

Thanks for the kind words man and you are fully correct.
I still am as annoyed as when I first stepped out and saw the damage and thought what a shame. But like you say I really had done just about everything I could, I had learnt alot with that car.
Atleast this time I can make cali 2.0 even better! XD
