Guide to Changing the Calibra's Pollen Filter

A blocked pollen filter will restrict the airflow your in-car fans can provide. It is often overlooked on the servicing of a car, and for the sake of £8.00 and 15 minutes of your time should easily be replaced. Here is how...

Lift the x2 plastic caps off the base of the wiper arms
Undo the x2 nuts securing the wiper arms onto their splines


Lift the x2 wiper arms up off their splines



Lift the long rubber strip off the scuttle panel
Lift the scuttle panel up and off to reveal the filter



The filter is held in be securing clips (circled yellow below)


Remove the old filter. Carefully hoover out any debris and leaves etc... and drop your new filter into place


Clip in securely and refit all the parts that you just took off. Look for dirt marks on the windscreen as a guide to where your wipers should rest!

what does this filter do? i have never replaced one in any of the 5 cars i have owned.

Its the cabin filter, it filters all the outside dust/pollen and other crap from entering the cabin  :)

My Hoover washes my clothes for me, can I use a vacuum cleaner instead of a washing machine?

my august 92 cally does not have one - just taken the black plastic housing off and there is no sign of one [ had the car since new so there is no way it has been modified.]
Still it was an easy job to do and looking on the bright side I have seen bits of my cally I've never seen before.

I had a problem with the car recently which had me scratching my head (and turning the air blue !!) Worth making a note of.....

I THOUGHT something had gone wrong with the heater fan - I couldn't get ANY air blowing onto the windcreen for demisting. Fan appeared to be running but no air coming out!  :(
I came to the conclusion (having recently changed the controls) that the intake control cable had disconnected itself and left the air intake closed. Dismantled dash and got heater controls out (and we know how much fun THAT is don't we children....) BUT NOPE, not that........
Damn sez I. Or maybe something like that.......
Right, finally thinks "I've got a new pollen filter, I'll just change it to see if it helps."
Strip off the covers and get the old filter off - DAMN it's completely saturated with water so allows NO air through at all!
Turns out (and I should have thought of it sooner cos it happened to my other Calibra too) the drain 'trunk' was blocked up and the water, with nowhere else to go, soaked into the pollen filter instead. Though, strangely water was NOT leaking into the car!

So, It seems the moral there - ALWAYS check the easy things first!!!  >:(  >:(

It's true... even mine was only lightly dusty but changing it was like doubling the power of the fans on each setting!

Yes mate

If it's full of dust, the fans can't suck air from outside properly to blow into the car. After I changed mine, the #2 setting on the fan was like the fastest setting before I changed it!

I reckon every 2-3 years is a must personally, otherwise it's like asking an asthmatic kid with downs syndrome to toss Shifty's salad

That said I saved 60 grams on my DTM by not having a pollen filter. So f*ck you all.
