Royal Timing Belt
« on: May 18, 2018, 22:16:58 PM »
Your all invited to the change of my timing belt tomorrow on my C20NE Calibra,  a tricky pulley bolt and a rusted in water pump being the highlights of the day - certainly more interesting than that Windsor stuff.

Lewis Hamilton said that winning his first race felt better than having sex. Kimi's reply to that was, Maybe he never had sex.

It all went a bit quiet at 12, so I watched it in the end before starting the timing belt, and yes a few horrors from the po's, pulley was seized to the crank belt cog?, had to undo the pulley bolt in the middle then separate the two with a hammer, messed up the timing marks so the plugs came out the distributor cap off and a coat hanger wire down the spark plug hole to get TDC. Chucked the old cam belt tensioner and took the water pump off after draining the radiator, no sign of an O ring on the pump just some goo - but no rust!!! New cam belt, new water pump and new tensioner fitted, spun the engine around twice by hand turning the crank pulley bolt readjusted the tensioner, spun it again.

Torqued it all up (did the pump before putting the timing belt on), fitted the air cleaner and stuff to the inlet manifold then started her up for a 20 secs - all Ok, put everything back, replaced the water - job done (5 hours) :)

Hi, Had to change my pump twice as the first one started leaking after a month, failed gland around the spindle. As luck would have it, it all came apart ok. Lets keep em' on the road.
 Cheers

Out of interest, what water pump did you fit? I was looking for one recently and it wasn't clear if it was 90444123 or 90272361...

The timing belt, adjuster and water pump were all Contitech got from evil bay, the water pump I bought separate to the timing belt and adjuster kit (worked out cheaper). If I did it again I would get it from Autodoc.uk less hassle cheaper once you put your vehicle details in. Early versions of the C20NE use different belt type and no adjuster - adjust with water pump, later ones have an adjuster but you still have to turn the water pump to get it in "range" of the adjuster. Part numbers no idea I chucked the boxes. You need to know if you have an early type belt (round tooth) or late type (square trapezoidal) belt and buy the water pump to suit either round teeth or square teeth.

Hi, Sorry been away, water pump part number for 8v 90444123. If buying on E bay check that part number against their part number. They usually give a list at the bottom of the page.
cheers
