Help choosing tools
« on: September 08, 2010, 14:10:49 PM »

Basically I have a few items that I am watching on the bay at the moment, but just want to be sure that they are the right tools that I will be needing to help rebuild my engine when the chance arises.

These are the items I am watching, but do they seem too cheap to be the genuine items?

Draper cam locking tool
http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270492794507&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Sealey Breaker Bar
http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120559654344&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Are Sealey any good? As to be honest, I haven't heard of them..... Also is the 1/2" socket the right size for the Star shaped heads I will need for the head bolts?

And lastly, can anybody reccomend me a decent yet not overly priced Torque wrench that will handle the majority of jobs I am ever likely to do an a car.....

Cheers,

Dave

Not sure why you'd want a breaker bar for the head bolts, slight overkill there & a big danger of over tightning with that. Depends what drive the tx-star sockets are, are they 1/2" or 3/8" drive? I think my draper ones are 3/8".

Just use whatever ratchet goes with the tx-star sockets & get a torque wrench to match. You won't pay more than £20 for a Draper one but could still get a reasonable one for less.

I've got 1/2" & 3/8" torque wrenches & that's pretty much all you'll ever need.

thats the thing DanBastardisedHybridCali bra, I have never understood the difference between 1/2 inch and 3/8.

I thing the head bolts use either E50 or T50?

No breaker bar, just a 1/2 torque wrench and preferrably 1/2 torx bits.

You will need new head bolts aswell.

I have never understood the difference between 1/2 inch and 3/8.

It's the size of the bit that fits into the sockets. 1/2" is bigger than 3/8".

1/2" and 3/8" is the size of the connector on the wrench head that goes into the socket/bit.

Buy the 1/2" version as you need to put alot of torque into the head bolts and you might find the 3/8" bits will crack under the strain.

Also note that I refered to Torx as TX-Star.

They're the same thing except the Draper stuff calls it TX-Star (that's what I have) & others call it Torx. Don't get confused, they're the same depending on what tools you're using.

And f*ck you back Shifty, mine was swift & to the point! :P
