I have serious doubts about the whole honours system, but if you are going to criticise it, you really need to get your facts right.

Not a dig at Hamilton for once but its not really difficult to get an MBE these days.

He is the first Brit to win the F1 World Championship since Damon Hill in 1996.  He is also the youngest driver to ever win the Title.  Both Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell only won it once and both got OBEs (I think that the Officer of the BE is higher than Member of the BE).

Quote
Because the uk is sh*t at sport in general, MBE's are awarded for mediocrity to be honest.

Britain is not "sh1t at sport in general".  In F1 in particular, not only has Britain got more World Champions than ANY other nation (9), but they have also won more Championships between them (13) than ANY other country, even allowing for Michael Schumacker's extraordinary 7 World titles.  The next nearest country is Brazil with 3 Drivers with only 8 World Championships between them.

On top of which, with the exception of Ferrari, four of the five most successful F1 Constructors have been based in England: McLaren (12), Williams (9), Lotus (6), Brabham (4).  That's how "sh1t" British racing teams are...

Nor is Britain hopeless in other sports.  Despite having a much smaller population than many nations and investing far less on training, coaching and facilities for our athletes, Britain came third in the Olympics medal table in Beijing, ahead of many countries that claim to be superior sporting nations.  Tell our cyclists, or rowers, or sailors that "Britain is sh1t at sports".

Dame kelly holmes was a f*ckin useless athlete for 99% of her career then wins one race and gets made a "dame" ?!!

I agree that it was ridiculous that Kelly Holmes was made a Dame - it set an absurd precedent which is now causing problems with Rebecca Addlington and others - but it is only the female equivalent of a being made a Sir and how many men have been knighted for doing little more than Kelly did?  And, if I remember correctly, the reason that she was made a Dame was that she won two Gold Medals, not just one and they weren't for just any old races, but two Olympic finals - the most prestigious races of their kind in the world.

Quote
If you want a title easily in the UK, just buy 1 square foot of land on a manor somewhere for £25-£30 and you gain the title of "Lord" without breaking into a sweat ;D

^^^That Lordship thing i just mentioned is genuine by the way ;)

I'm sure that it is, but the ability to 'buy' a title, whether by buying a particular patch of land, or by supplying soldiers to a monarch in the past, or by donating or loaning funds to political parties today, is even less justifiable than being recognised for reaching the top of your sporting profession.

why does one or maybe two achievements warrant a knighthood, mbe, obe etc ? So Kelly Holmes is made a dame for running round in a circle yet a soldier that fought in afghanistan who maybe has lost a limb just gets a bravery medal ?! What about athletes that consistently dominate sports such as chelsea and man utd players ? surely rooney deserves an mbe ? i have no objection to athletes being given titles as long as they have earned it over their career and not just when they have a flash in the pan victory at the end or start of the career. Now if Schumacher was british he would rightly deserve an mbe/obe as he is a legend of the sport. maybe one day Hamilton will be but not after winning one championship does he deserve an mbe.

olympics are joke IMO no matter what the event. I do not believe rowing a boat or riding a bicycle is a sport. when i ride my bike to work some mornings does it mean i'm competing in a sport ? when the first olympics were held, did bicycles even exist ? don't recall rowing/sailing being an event either ? By far the biggest load of shite as far as sport is concerned and whats worse is that i'm paying towards hosting it in 2012 !!!

I have to agree on the Olympics, surely to god the state the country is in right at this moment with very few peoples jobs 'safe' all the money being spent on that could be put to better use? Granted the building of whatever they are using for it is currently employing people but then what!!

totally agree NanaALZ :)

I hope Hamilton continues to be successful as this country needs more people like him to show what used to be "Great" about Britain whether i like him as a person or not.

That argument is about as fatuous as arguing that "when I drive my car to work some mornings does it mean I'm competing in a sport?"  Therefore, driving round a grand prix circuit isn't a sport.  Doh!  ::)

I don't know how you define a 'sport', but the fact that you can use similar activities as a mode of transport, a form of recreation, or a sport does not mean that activity can't be a sport.

I agree that gongs are given out like confetti, often to less deserving, but more popular reciepients, to the extent that they have become devalued.

I agree that you can't equate sporting achievements with military exploits, but just what would you have wounded soldiers given, apart from 'compensation' and a decent pension?  You could shower them all with VCs, or other honours and devalue those honours in much the same way...

With the front wings the middle of it can't be used to create downforce so they have to make them wider to compensate for that, and with making the rear wing tall and skinny they look completely out of preportion to each other.

I agree, not a very elegant car, let's hope that it improves with development, although with restrictions on in season testing it may be difficult to implement improvements.

Being outboard of the front wheels I don't see how the front spoiler is going to make overtaking easier - I don't see them lasting very long!

Yes I think what we see here is largely what they will all look like, the Mclaren MP4-24 launches Fri and I expect it'll look the same tbh. I did read somewhere how the new spoilers will work, it did make sense too, can't remember where I read it though :D

I think in regards to front wings there is something they can use when behind another car to create more downforce, can't remember where i read it. But they are going to end up getting knocked off as the drivers can't see them and don't think about them being their when they are driving.

There's always appears to have been a contradiction between:
    • driving close behind another car to reduce air resistance because the car in front is 'punching a hole in the air', so that the following car has less air to displace.  This effectively appears to create a partial 'vacuum', or pocket of low air pressure, that 'sucks' the following car along.  This can enable the following car to use this 'drag' from the car in front to create a sling-shot effect for overtaking
    • and the instability caused by driving in the 'dirty' turbulent air left by the car in front, which upsets the downforce on the following car and adversely affects road-holding and creates more drag.

Once again I'm being quoted out of context, what I actually wrote was:

"That argument is about as fatuous as arguing that "when I drive my car to work some mornings does it mean I'm competing in a sport?"  Therefore, driving round a grand prix circuit isn't a sport.  Doh!  ::)"

In response to the argument that "when i ride my bike to work some mornings does it mean i'm competing in a sport?"

How do you define a 'sport'?  Dictionary: "a pastime of an outdoor or athletic kind" - motor racing is undoubtedly an 'outdoor pastime'.  I would go one stage further and suggest that it normally involves some degree of competition.  If the Romans could regard chariot racing as a 'sport', I don't see why we shouldn't regard the modern equivalent as such.

I may not like some of the pastimes that you indulge in, or get pleasure from watching, but I wouldn't dis' them, unless there was a particular reason for doing so (like them involving unnecessary animal cruelty).
