Hello and welcome to ClubCalibra.com.

My advice would be to do some research on the idea of converting to RWD and Google it as well.

It is a big BIG job to do and needs plenty of custom fabricating. If you think you are capable then by all means go ahead, it would be great to see.

Just make sure you realise just how big the job is first :)

Hi and welcome

as to the plans, we seem to get a new member once every 6 months planning a big engined rwd calibra and we never hear anything back on how it going. Lets hope you are the one to do it. I think a 4x4 chassis will be your best bet for rwd but one of the more technical members will give you more info.

As I'm sure that you are aware, the 383Ci is a bored out 350, which is a V8.  The Calibra has a very low bonnet line - one of the things that contributes to its low drag coefficient.  Unfortunately, as Bad Kid says, this means that a V8 wouldn't fit under it.  You could fit a V8, but to do so, you would have to have an American 'funny car' style power-bulge in the bonnet to accommodate it - and that would be the least of your problems.

You're right that the V6 (and Turbo) have beefed up suspension, anti-roll bars, wheel hubs (5-stud), brakes and so on, to cope with the additional weight and higher speeds, but that is the extra weight of the 2.5L V6 lump, not a massive 5.7L Chevvy V8!  You would probably have to scrap just about everything in the V6 suspension and start from scratch with springs, shocks, ARBs and brakes.  It's not impossible, but as several people have said, it's a huge undertaking.

I still think that the best Calibra conversion ever done was Frank's supercharged 3.2L V6 and even that suffered from still being fwd.

I still think Franks supercharged 3.2 V6 no longer exists so who cares?

Agreed Robbo, another pipe dream.

Sadly not, but at least it was built and it did exist and quite a few of us were lucky enough to have rides in it - so it wasn't just a 'pipe dream' - even if, now, it is just a happy memory.  I'm looking forward to meeting Frank again, at Santa Pod, next weekend.

No idea.  Probably meeting him at his hotel and will go on to the strip from there, so if that's what he's come in, we may do.  Certainly puts my E60 5 Series M-Sport in the shade...

The 'standard' M5 has a 5.0L V10 engine, producing around 500bhp and 520Nm of torque, with a 0-62mph time of 4.7s, 0-100mph of 10.1s.  With the electronic speed limiter removed it is capable of doing 203mph.  I believe that Frank's was producing at least 560bhp, but he had some more mods 'in the pipeline' - certainly not another 'pipe dream'...

If I see it I will, but I don't suppose that it will look much different from my E60 M-sport!  It's what he started with under the bonnet and what he's had done to it that gives it more than twice the power!  My E60 is no slouch either, despite weighing 1650kg, acceleration is similar to my V6 Calibra and the top speed is electronically limited to the same 155mph as a standard M5!
