Important Information Regarding Number/Show Plates
« on: September 25, 2008, 14:29:03 PM »
Guys n Gals, Get your show plates in NOW!!!

Please read below, caught this on another forum and thought you lot might want to know.

"You may have seen in the press that from 1st November 2008 it will become an offence to sell or manufacture registration plates that do not conform to the latest British Standards and design criteria laid down by the DVLA. Consequently the ability to purchase Showplates displaying non-legal fonts/spacing/images/slogans etc will be outlawed.

While it is already an offence across the UK for motorists to display non-compliant number plates on their vehicles, as of 1st November 2008 it will become an offence to supply number plates that do not comply with the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. Some number plate suppliers already advise their customers that non-compliant number plates cannot be used on the road and are for display purposes only, however, it will now be an offence to supply non-compliant number plates irrespective of any advice given."

If you have to own a Calibra; make sure it's the 4x4 turbo. You dont want to fanny around with a FWD car.

i heard that if your plates dont have some small numbers in the bottom right hand corner then they are not legal. some kind of plate id i guess. my mate just mot'd his car and had to pay £20 to the mot testing station to change his plates for this reason.

That's true, it's to identify where the plate was bought from. :)

I spoke to a guy yesterday at a market who makes show plates and road legal plates and asked him about this new rule on number plate id etc and he told me that it only affects models made after 2003 ? I assume he has done his homework on the subject as he'd get in alot of trouble if he was misinforming his customers.

He was the same guy who did my plates (road legal type, standard font with an england flag on the left) and he said i wont get any questions asked at my next MOT so finger crossed ay :)

These are the new Regulations< i can't find anything that exempts pre-2003 cars, unless it is just referring to existing number plates...

"From 1st November 2008 it will become an offence to sell or manufacture registration plates that do not conform to the latest British Standards and design criteria laid down by the DVLA.

"You will still be able to get 12x6 plates but only from a registered supplier and with their name at the bottom, post code, SDI number and BS number in the corner."

Why do these new regulations always have to be so complex ?!!

just when your mind is put at ease regarding your current plates, you read something that totally contradicts it >:(

F*cking DVLA need to stop coming up with sh*t regulations and work harder to catch uninsured drivers !

Is it the DVLA, or the Dept of Transport that comes up with these Regulations?

To be fair, part of the reason behind making it more difficult to obtain phony number plates is to make it easier to catch uninsured drivers, especially using ANPR.  It makes it more difficult to 'clone' a car number plate to make it appear legit.

The ANPR is unlikely to pick up the plate id code so its not really going to help in that respect.

You're right about ANPR, but if the plate hasn't got all the codes on it, it will be easier for a police officer, 'special', or warden to spot it when the car is parked and check it out.  I can't see some tea-leaf bothering to keep switching the plates every time they park up.

agreed. This whole issue has got a stealth tax feel to it.

I'd say the main issue is regarding the petrol pump drive off scenario.
