Guide to Swapping the Sunroof
« on: September 08, 2006, 06:26:04 AM »
Just though i would share this with you guys as ive just done this job on my car and found it an easy job.
Its not for the faint hearted though as is quite involved but any one compitant with spanners should have no problems.
The first thing to do is buy a good working roof i bought a complete car with a working roof but there are other option.

1. I would recommend taking out the front seats first to give you more room to work in the car. Easy to do as only 4 13mm bolts to take out. If fitted with pre tensioners put the red clip in place first should be a warning label on pre tensioner to tell you where it fits. Also disconect wiring if fitted with heated seats.

2. You now need to remove/loosen the plastic trims that run up the door pillars and the pillar where the seat belt is again a straight forward job the front part has 1 torx screw or if fitted with grab handles 2 extra , remove the coat hook in the centre to reveal another the center and rear plastics dont need to come off but need pryingdown to release the headlining. Also remove the bolt from rear seat belt as it alows the trim to hang down.

3. Remove all other items holhing the headlining in place such as sunvisors, rear light, sunroof switch and alarm sensors 3 scres each on visors and other stuff just cliped.

4.Now the trick part if you roof wont open like mine then you now need to get the inner finishing seal off if you carefully push up where the join is then once started you can pull it off. Under the seal there are 4 metal clips holding the lining to the roof along the clips are slots the slots indicate tabs that are bent over and hold the lining to the roof. If you cant get to them dont worry gently pry them off the lining and refit afterwards you will see how they fit once off.
Then you need to push the headlining backwards as the rear has a clip that slots into the roof panel. May be worth getting someone to help with this so you dont damage the lining as you slide it out of the car through the tailgate. Then you need to remove the roof inner trim panel this shoul just pull off.

5. Now you will see all the suroof and may be put off but dont worry the next bit is easy. Firstly look at what is where drain tubes in all 4 corners need to be disconnected they will be tight just twit gently with some pliars and they will release then pull off. Take note off where the wiring routes then remove and drape over the steering wheel to keep it out of the way.

6. Now removal of the roof. First remove the roof panel itself there should be 6 10mm nuts with built in washers holding the panel on remove them the push the panel upwards and remove to a safe place.
Along the rear of the assembly are 4 10mm bolts lossen these about halfway you will see the assembly slot over these bolts so they dont need to come out.
Down each side you will see 2 brackets attched to the body and sunroof assemby again 10mm dont remove the nuts and bolts holding the assembly to the brackets 4 nuts and 4 bolts.
Next you will see 4 nuts 1 in each corner that are held in with circlips. Undo these nuts gradually as you will see when you undo the they lower the roof so undo a bit them do the same with another then another one just so you dont twist the panels them the assembly may fall out or may need a bit of help .
On either side there is a peg that the roof locates on in the middle it may just need a pull.
Then hopefully your sunroof is off.

7. Refitting is the reversal of removal. Slide the slotted end over the 4 bolts at the back and tighten the 4 captivated nut first do them up evenly till the assembly is aligned and up to the brackets that are fixed to the body. then refit the 4 bolts and 4 nuts to hold in place tighten the 4 bolts at the rear.

8. Next refit the roof panel and use the 4 captive nuts to adjust the panel to get it flush with the roof panel once you have done this reconnect all the wiring and test it works. If you ar happy with it remove the panel again and refitt everything else.

Hope this was useful info for anyone wanting to have a go.
I already had the interior out of mine but some one with reasonable skills shoud be able to do this in a day.
To remove the headlining and fit the roof so it was working took me about 2 hours but it took longer to refit the lining and trims as they can be tricky to do.

I took some pics but mos didnt turn out.
You can see the motor and rear bolt in one of the pics when undoing these just lossen half way as the roof has slots so is esier to put back if the bolts are in place.

There is a pics of the side mountings and roof panel. The panel has 3 nuts each side remove both sides and the roof panel just lifts off.

There is a pic of the side mouning all 4 are similar 1 bolt to the body and 3 to the roof.
Leave the bracket fastened to the body and undo the others. Firstly undo the nylock nuts and the bolts 2 either side.
Then you will see 4 captive nuts 1 in each corner these are held in with circlips. Undo evenly and the roof will lower and come out just keep hold or it may drop on top of you.
When refitting these 4 nuts adjust the roof panel by raising or lowering each corner.

The last 2 pics show the headlining clips the fit along each side of the opening and have tabs that bend over the roof assembly.

Hope these help.
