Front top mounts buggered?
« on: August 13, 2016, 13:42:54 PM »
Hi all,

I've been experiencing a knocking noise coming from the front suspension while going over a bump. Not really over speedbumps, but like curbs and the lot.

I've replaced the ARB bushings but it keeps on knocking.

Opened the hood and looked at the top mounts on either side. It seems they have a gap in between the top part and the chassis... figure that's buggered?

Anyway, I've ordered some new top mounts and wanted to replace them.

Problem is, the arm connecting to the steering rack, as well as the part of the wishbone sitting at the wheel hub (nut is safe-fixed with a circlip on bolt) are not coming off. I've tried gently hammering it, or levering it with some sort of tool, but to no avail... Am I missing something? Is it glued on or does it just need a solid hammering?

I've attached some pics for explaining what I mean... Thanks for the advice.

Regards
Wim

To them apart the easiest way is a ball joint splitter, one type is like a wedge you hammer in between, another type pulls them apart, pulling type are  better as the wedge type damages the rubber bits and so they then need replacing as well, i use a foot long bar of 12mm round steel on the outside of the balljoint... missing the rubber bits... and hit the other end with a big lump hammer a few times if i cant find the ball joint splitter, it often takes a massive whack which is why i dont hit the threads on the end of the bolt or you can damage the threads

Whenever mine is apart i tend to change the links and wishbones at the same time as i find none of them last long before things start to knock

If you just wanted to hide the gap....and were not getting any knocking noises you can just turn the metal top bit upside down and bolt it back on to hide the gap.

Your top mount picture left right it looks like there is a nut under the top plate which is not meant to be there

Thanks all, I'll give it another go today and post back.
I also have a spare wishbone and steering arm joints - Will try to replace them at the same time.

I'm pretty sure though the strut assembly (top area) has always been like that... at least I haven't changed anything about it myself. The gap seems pretty obvious though. Depending wheel position the gap narrows/opens at one end and close to the other.

Wim
