Tune the c20xe or do a v6/c20let swap?
« on: July 17, 2017, 11:29:52 AM »
Hello mates!
I own a very good looking calibra with the Sydney Irmscher body kit and the c20xe engin.
Been reading around on forums on what you need to do for a successful swap and also a bit about tuning the c20xe (sound like it costs a lot to make it give 180bhp?), but I would love to hear what you people think is the best way to make the car faster, would be lovely to take it down to 0-100km/h on 6.5-7secs but maby asking for to much?
And from what I can understand it's hard to tune the c20xe and still have it as strong as it is in low revs.

I use my car as a summer/hobby car and want to do long trips with it but at the same time have a blast on the smal curvy country roads, so dont want to tune so much so I loose the driveability when not being on a track.

I know many think it's better to just buy a v6/let car insteed of doing a swap, but with the calis starting to cost more and more, and it being hard to find one with no rust or dmg for a cheap price I think it will cost me less to do this instead of buying one and swap my kit and respray the hole car. Also I dont want to redo all the other work I have done to the car.

Any imput or own experience is very welcome!
Cheers Emil!  :D

C20let 2wd will easily and savingly let you reach 250 hp mark. 2.5V6 can be tuned to 200bhp with a couple of 3.0 V6 inlet cams and some cheap breathing mods.
It's hard to know wich way can be yours. I've drive both, turbo and NA engines and I'd choosen the NA big displacement solution and have swaped a 3.0V6 lump inside. Next step will be solve breathig limit of Cali v6 legdog inlet plenum wich affect maximum power on this engines.
A stock 3.0V6 with Omega Ecu and inlet, with a couple of better flowing exhaust manifolds can go close to 250hp mark and cost should be not so diffrent with a C20LET swap (you surelly spend less money on a v6 lump instead of a LET one).
What changes from this solutions is torque. A let engine will have a lot of torque only when turbo kicks at its max boost, this mean engine need allways to work over 3.000k rev limit to push hard. A NA 3.0 (wich basically have 211hp) have allways its torque, never thinking about go ahead of some rev limit to have performance. Both have a positive and a negative sides.
LET +
savingly tuneable to 250hp
lightweight than a V6 lump
tons of experience on it
tons of components
Higher MPG than V6

LET -
Engine more expensive
A lot of torque but less linear than V6
No good traction on 1st and 2nd gears
Known issue if not a coscast head

V6 +
Cheap engine
Good flat torque, allways ready
Exotic sound
Good power figure even on a 2.5 with a 100£ spent for a couple of 3.0 inlet cams

V6 -
Heavy engine
Lower MPG than LET
not a ton of different components available
Not really a high revving engine (exept for Y32SE wich is a steele crank)

If your plans are to go more on track than on curvy roads I'l go for a LET and be happy of its kick when turbo spools off.
If you like more to ride on curvy roads I'll choose a V6, wich let you enjoy more your travel with a good power reserve if needed.

My toughts guys, I hope nobody was offended by my opinions
cheers

Ty a lot for the great answer mate, sorry for the late replie, have had some ruff weeks with a family member on the hospital so been little time for the car :(

But all good now! Also got a really cheap V6 cali most so that I could feel how it is to drive and have to say I really like it.

Awesome on the highway with its long gears but also faster then the redtop. Tho it dont feel as sporty. But feel I rather have a good fast Grand Tourer car then a trackish car.

My next dilemma tho is how hard the swap is. Feels like its a lot to do with the electrics and all so afraid my skills arent enough :s

The cally has always been a bit more of a Grand Tourer than a sports car in my opinion, especially with the V6 engine.
Plus i've always loved the bark of a V6.  8)

If you want to go faster, money is better spent on the brakes, tyres and suspension than on the engine.

Not so hard swap.Electronic is plug&play,u need the whole V6 wiring loom and ecu and everything goes in the right place. If you swap its gearbox it's little bit easier than different boxes, otherwise you'll need 4 spacers (3 for right mount lugs and 1 for drive shaft bearing housing) plus you need to weld the tie-rod housing near right strut

And of course as Bad kid told you,big brakes (308mm with calibra turbo calipers and vectra B gsi carriers), good tires and a set of V6 sport springs

Thats already done one the car so that why Im looking at the alternativs, but you are right ofcourse. But as mine stops on a dime and have fresh tires wich are balanced on some sweet borbet rims I feel power is the next step before I give the care a new paint :)
