LoL.  Funny that, when I believe that it is illegal not to have an internal rear-view mirror in a car! ;D

So a 15-20% tint film would be the maximum permissible addition.  :(

I was told its ok to have 2 out of the 3!!!(like break lights!)
like a van! they don't have a centre mirror! (well not all of them!)but my 1.2 Nova never had a left hand side mirror! just a blank plate!

This is all getting a bit off topic as well! sorry to the OP!!!

I don't think it is illegal.

There appears to be some confusion over this.  I believe that under UK law a vehicle has to have a minimum 'two rear view mirrors'.  On a car this can be a drivers side mirror (wing or door mounted) and an internal rear view mirror, or possible two external mirrors, as on a van with no rear windows.  On a van or truck, with no view through the rear window, this can be two external mirrors.  However, I have also heard that if a vehicle is fitted with an internal rear view mirror when it is built, it is required to have one and may fail it's MoT if it doesn't.  I'm not quite sure what the law says if the rear window is so blacked out that an internal rear view mirror is useless for anything except doing your make-up, or chatting to your passengers... ;D

As you say J@z, you have to have 2 out of the 3 (passenger wing, drivers wing and interior) and one of those 2 has to be drivers wing for obvious reasons

pretty much what I said!
but intresting what you say about ,if vehicle was fitted with a centre one! then it should be there and see out through it!!
coz I'm sure I've been in a van with a solid bulk head and it had a centre mirror!
and I've had a few sprinter vans where the  windscreen has a block on it where the mirror stalk would attach! and when I've had the screen changed they always put a screen with that little block on it back in! ???

As long as it has two external mirrors it will pass the MOT regardless of the internal mirror.

As Rob said it would pass.

To put it simply, you have to have:

Drivers wing mirror + passenger wing mirror or drivers wing mirror + interior mirror.

Obviously you can have all 3.

Can anyone quote the exact Regulation?  As far as I can tell it should be part of the 'Construction and Use Regulations'.

While on the subject, why do our legislators make it so impossibly difficult to find a straight answer to such a simple question?  An internet search around various government websites, like the Dept of Transport, produces no definitive answer.   >:(

I was told what I posted above about 9 years ago when I had a C reg Nova that only had an interior and drivers wing mirrors.

I wanted to know if it was legal and found that it was and they were made like that at the factory.

Sounds like the law hasn't changed then :)

Obviously if you have a van with only an interior mirror and drivers wing mirror, you would need to have a passenger wing mirror if you could not see clearly out of the interior mirror.

I rang a mate (20+ years MOT tester) and thats the info he gave me.

The problem is that it would appear that not all MoT Testers 'interpret' the law in the same way and advice from all kinds of sources appears to be contradictory.  That's why I asked whether anyone could point to the specific Regulation - always assuming that the Regulation hasn't changed.  For example, Regulation 110 that appears to relate to the requirements of rear view mirrors in Northern Ireland was amended, apparently in 1986.

I've recently had a similar problem with the Highways Act 1980, in relation to Restricted Byways.  Even the Legal Department and Rights of Way Office of our County Council weren't sure what the law was.  After wasting a lot of time, we eventually found out that Sections 115a, b & c of the Highways Act had been amended at some point to cover Restricted Byways.  Once we had been pointed in the direction of the appropriate stature we were able to get the lawyers to verify the position.

The laws in Britain are a convoluted mess that serves no-one except lawyers.  Some of them appear to be deliberately convoluted in order to obfuscate what the legislators were trying to achieve, without everyone being aware of what was being enacted. >:(

My mate said not all mirrors are subject to the MOT test, If there's no internal mirror and two wing mirrors it will pass the MOT.

My old escort van didn't have an internal mirror (it was removed) had windows in rear doors and still passed the MOT.

I wouldn't worry too much about it J@z.

I'm not 'worrying about it'.  I have a fairly dark tint on my rear window and retractable sun-blinds, but I do have an interior mirror.  However, I am still interested in what the law actually says about obscuring the view out of the rear window, if the car was designed to have a rear view mirror.  Clearly a van, or estate (or coupe) with rear seats that are designed to fold down to take a load, might well have the rear view obstructed by a load in the back of the vehicle.  AFAIK this is not illegal.

It's not illegal because even with the rear view mirror being obscured, you still have 2 wing mirrors.

It's not illegal because even with the rear view mirror being obscured, you still have 2 wing mirrors.

So, you are only required, by law, to have two mirrors.  One of which MUST be the drivers side mirror.  You can then have an interior mirror, or a passenger side mirror.  If you have a drivers side mirror, but no passenger side mirror, is it then illegal to pack your estate car so that it obscures the interior mirror?

PS It's a long time since I had a car with 'wing' mirrors!  LoL  ;D

I concur! ;D

The Escort passed several MOT's (including the one earlier this year) with no rear view mirror, just the two wing mirrors. :)

Vectra B X20XEV GLS - Daily "bag of spanners" drive.
