The numberplate is in. It's on sticky pads which allow it to sit on the curved glass

Is that legal? It's forward-facing, sort of.

My Sparco harnesses showed up too!

They are really good quality compared to the Willans ones I used before and have quick release fixings for easy removal

The fixing points are as follows. The inner lap belt mounts are where the standard seat belt buckle bolts to. This is part of the seat subframe

Looking like this when fitted...

The outer lap belt mounting points are the frontmost point at which the standard seatbelt rail bolts to...

The shoulder belts are as follows...

They cross over, with the outers securing where the rear seatbelt plugs are normally bolted to (in the centre of the rear bench)

The inners cross over to the rear pillar

This is where my battery will eventually live, for better weight distribution I need an alloy tray for this and an Optima lightweight battery. It'll also free up room in the engine bay for any future mods (turbo the size of Wales?!)

I've also started securing wiring and pipework down using nifty little pads which are self adhesive and allow you to cable-tie things to them! The whole interior will be looking MUCH neater soon

I've also got some rubber mats and some corrugated sleeving to tidy up the looms. More to come soon!

EXCITING DAY TODAY YO.

Cleaning a dirty rear diff

Before

During

After

Car is now ticking over pretty good, update time, we've done the following (thanks to Jack and Jonny)

- Wired in engine fan
- Fitted cleaner header tank and added water and sorted several leaks (needs a new rad though :( )

Next up Jonny went mad with the T-cut in the engine bay

And off came the wiper arms

And scuttle panel

We gave it a good soapy wash

And refitted it and gave it a good coat of vinyl cleaner

Finally we fitted a new bonnet release cable, for the upcoming MOT

Yesterday Jonny arrived nice and early (he bought my SE8!)

We saw what was possibly the flukiest bird sh*t ever, it exploded like a grand slam bomb and got right inside the boot

Next up I put on the wing mirrors

They fit okay, but not perfectly. Hmmmmm.

The mission began with a tow

We arrived at our destination, and parked next to some lesser cars

Where's your gaffa taped side skirts?

Up on the ramp for the exhaust fit. We've put a stainless scorpion 2.5" bore on it just for the time being, seeing as my main fabricator isn't able to do my exhaust just yet.

The place we went to was that busy we didn't finish till 6pm

Today I did some more vinyls

They really are fantastic to work with. Excellent quality and very satisfying to fit

I fitted a couple more on the boot, the two Mobil 1 logos. If you look at the top of the rear screen you'll see the Opel Team Joest as well. I'll be adding a red sunstrip under this (same as on front of car)

Finally I fitted the retrimmed leather cushions to the seats

Mr Miaw thinks I'm an idiot though. He says unless I buy him tuna, I can never succeed.

Well I've got a few more little jobs done:

Firstly a rear sunstrip and some decals on the roof edge. They turned out really good

Next I peeled off the stock roof rails

They have now been replaced with DTM ones (smoothed and colour coded white from the factory)

Next up I replaced the stock crappy side lights...

With these ice blue ones. Much better.

...and fitted some HIDs. They are 55w 6000K... and one ballast was dead on arrival

Tell you what though, they are epic at night

More news...

Firstly it was time to final-fit the HIDs and seal them in watertight. First off I took the standard headlight covers

Used a hole cutter like this...

And the grommet fitted snugly like so. I might add some silicone just to be sure.

All the power wiring is contained within the headlight unit, which is cool. No wires outside the headlight except the braided wires to the ballasts!

Jonny and his missus popped round for some mincing before our day at Santa Pod tomorrow. Here's the beast getting a wash. Jonny is hoping for a high 16, given that his car makes good power.

I see something in the reflection!

Project jockstrap! (cos it's better than a kick in the balls)

Next up Jonny's missus worked her mad paint skillz on my interior

Before (loose sound deadening on the right, cleaned floor on the left). Even cleaned it's still dull.

During:

After:

The finish is nice and smooth. Definitely better than the shitty grey colour left from the sound deadening. We'll consider a second coat next week, and finish doing the front section of the floor.

Big thanks to the main girl for that! :inw:

Finally here are a few pics of the test fitting of my wet fuel pressure gauge and fuel pump switch/relay

I'm using this bracket to bolt to the floor, and hold the gauge and the switch.

How to crimp, the manly way

Gauge...

The hoses are joint free from pump to rail, and back to tank. When I say joint free I mean no jubilees (unlike the stock system which has over 9000). They are all proper compression fittings :D NO LEAKS!

I'll be using these sticky-back cable tidies on the painted floor. You just loop a cable tie through them to tidy wires.

... I have a few more bits of news.

I did a teeny bit more paintwork, did the spare wheel well and the passenger seat floor before I ran out of paint (500ml got me that far!). I've got another litre to finish the job (will do that tomorrow if it's dry)

Here are my replacement dials, I didn't think white ones were appropriate in a track car with black Stack gauges. They are still 160mph/electronic speedo drive. I find they can also be made brighter at night.

I've decided to put a skeleton dashboard back in, as they weigh naff all compared to the wiring, soundproofing and fittings hidden behind. It'll let me mount my clocks and light switches properly. I'll mount the Stack gauges where the heaters normally are.

Engine wise I've just fitted a new TPS (genuine Bosch) for good measure and ran it up to temperature a couple more times.

I've also got a TX autosport solid metal water pipe to replace the shitty plastic one. I love stuff like this to improve reliability  :) It'll also let me weld over the outlets I'm no longer using (no heater matrix) instead of bunging them up.

Here's a quick video for you of it ticking over

I laid underneath it for a minute or two and there are no leaks whatsoever, which is nice. You know your Dad's here.

I also now have all the gears as far as I can tell.

Body wise I spent this morning spraying up some aluminium mesh. I went for gloss black.

I was going to fibreglass it on, but this seems secure enough and means it's removable.

Here it is fitted... barely noticeable actually. I *might* go for some honeycomb type mesh in future... not sure TBH (and dont really care enough, lol)

Next up I spent HOURS t-cutting the skirts up to get rid of the sticky residue left by gaffer tape. Then put some new vinyls on...

I'm chuffed!  :) It's now about 95% vinyl'd... it needs another flash on the rear quarter and a few random vinyls here and there but it's almost done.

Here's the homologation stickers for the bonnet, as per DTM car. Would be comical if I crashed on a trackday and the marshalls looked for an isolator! :D I'll have to cross them out for that scenario.

I've also finished the rear sunstrip (no pics) and laid out the rear roof vinyls (no pics yet). Im aiming to have the vinyls 100% done in the next week or two.

Finally I got to t-cut up a 3rd Compmotive wheel. It's made a good difference

Just one left to go!

Oh and my G-max springs and dampers showed up.

I'll be building up some freshly powdercoated legs with new bearings and strut tops! They should look/perform beautifully I hope.

Okay I gave up on trying to have a Calibra without a dash. Mounting the clocks wasn't a problem but the fusebox, headlight switch and wiring was just left dangling. It was a mess.

So, I found a dash, gutted it and fitted it. It's a lot lighter than the standard dash because there's no sound deadening, no heater matrix and very little fittings... but it's still maybe 5kgs I didn't want

I've wired in the gauges. Each gauge has the following wires

Ignition live
Permanent earth
Illumination live
Illumination earth (dimmer system)
Sender wiring

I've basically had to knock up a small loom with all of the wires. It's very basic, just some wire from an old wiring loom with crimped terminals. I've wrapped it in insulation tape to cover the solder joints and keep it all pointing in the right direction. It'll do the job.

It's a crapload of wires :( At this point I've still not bought or wired in the wideband lamda system, EGT gauge or comedy rev counter... so there's more to come. I might tape the whole lot up together with amalgamating tape or loom wrap to keep it neat

Here are the gauges finished and fitted. They should illuminate and dim with the speedo clocks  :) The may need some hoods to shield them from sunlight, I'll have to see. I'm happy anyway!

I tested all the wiring for continuity with a multimeter, then finished it all up nicely. I also mounted the speedo properly and fitted the plastics back on. All done!

Plan is next to get a rev counter mounted on the top of the dash, as big as possible (I'm thinking 5"). This is for Santa Pod mainly, as I launch with one eye on the revs and the other on the lights.

Rawr rawr update time. Well, where to begin really... change is afoot! The main news is I bought a Cav Turbo to strip, in the process I had a few bits for my car... mainly the freshly built 86.5mm block. So yes, the whole lot came out of the Calibra again to fit my big-spec head and gearbox onto the new block... and swap things like the steel rods over as well. So it was pretty much a case of stripping down two fairly decent engines to make one super one!

Here's the Cav

Out came both the engines with a bit of cursing and swearing

Ahead now was the task of putting all the best bits onto the 86.5mm block

First up was a hone and a set of rings (+.5mm obviously)

Once these were on the oversize pistons I swapped over my steel rods and ARP bolts and checked the crank, casing and bores over for cracks, damage and tolerances.I put a silicone hose on the back of the water pump, where the normal 3-way hose is prone to splitting (and is a c*nt to change)

That should do the trick. I didn't care about the colour because it's unseen (rest of the hoses are red)

I have this for the sump

It'll let me put a temperature probe in there to monitor the oil temperature. I'd like similar ones for the gearbox and TXB oil.Brand new black diamond fast road clutch? It'll do for now until I look into a lightened flywheel (maybe) and a helix paddle clutch

It's also got a C20NE bonded baffle plate in it for good measure to help stop leaks.

I'm left over with a spare head as well, which I may keep to build a custom inlet plenum onto (one for the winter maybe)

Meanwhile the subframe is off and jetwashed down, ready for modifying to clear the turbo to intercooler pipe.

It'll be powdercoated (silver possibly?) shortly.

I binned the anti roll bar after that pic was taken for my new one. It's been chemically dipped, shot peened and powdercoated in gloss red. It's the later, thicker bar with the bolt-on droplinks. They've now got Powerflex bushes

The actual mounts for the ARB are powerflex too

All ready to fit when the subframe comes back

Yes I am aware this a monumental amount of f***ing around, re-doing the same job several times etc...

I also gave some brand new lower arms the love from Powerflex

I also got a strut brace done to match the anti-roll bar. It's made from steel which is much more rigid than the usual aluminium.

That's the front suspension pretty much sorted, from top to toe. It should be mega tight and grippy!

Rear suspension will get similar treatment

That's a complete rear setup I'm stripping down and getting powdercoated/polybushed. I'm also tempted to add some weld to a few of the factory mounts (rear ARB looks a bit shaky) to stiffen things up a bit. Not that it's rotten, it just looks like a poor job from the factory. I'm going to go red and silver on the rear suspension I think, and probably do new shoes and brakes too.

Back on the car...

Apex rear suspension removed (came with the car)

Brand new Gmax springs and shcoks on...

With plenty of WD40 in the bottom shock bolt hole

New rear topmounts on. Anyone fancy a rear strutbrace? To be honest I'm set on getting a cage for it now so I wont bother

And back on the car...

Front suspension was off next.

Gmax on

This won't be the last time either as I have some spare legs I want to get new bearings pressed into and powdercoated. I'll then send them off to have some caliper carriers made... the plan is to run some 4-pots (probably Brembo) on Astra VXR discs (340mm ish I believe). So then I'll put this Gmax kit over onto those mint legs. Then I should have a Calibra that handles and brakes exceptionally well!

Interior-wise there has been some progress too

The floor has been fully painted now

In the end I managed to remove 3 binliners FULL of sound deadening, insulation and wiring. There was a lot of weight there... not to mention the seats/doorcards/roof lining.

Speaking of the seats, they are still a pain to get in and out of. This Momo snap-off boss will make that easier though and also keep the car more secure

I'm fitting a Vx220 alloy handbrake handle as well

The bodywork has seen a few tweaks between jobs as well. The final door flash was added professionally. £60 per hour and they took their time, lol. I need them to re-do the other side too where I scored a line through the vinyl when rolling the car past an open toolbox drawer :-(

I did a few last tweaks before the engine went back in. The bay was looking quite sorry for itself and the fact I had no airbox left the brackets sat there doing nothing

Out came the grinder

My elite skills were put to work

All gone

And temporarily painted to stop rusting

I'll be doing something with the paint in the bay long term. Possibly matt black. Possibly matt white. Either way it needs some time and prep work which I dont have the patience for right now.

The "new" engine was then fitted, along with the F28 and a transfer box (4WD coming soon!)

I got the brackets for the prop back from the powdercoaters too! (excuse the greasy fingermarks)

As it stands now the engine is bolted into place, but awaiting the modified/powdercoated subframe before I can crack on with getting it all wired up, plumbed in and running. On that note, my last engine ran

OK except for electrical problems when it got up to temperature. I WILL call an autoelectrician if this happens again on the new build. I just want this beast on the road now!

Since doing all that I've also replaced the 50ft aerial with a stubby one, saved myself about 20 grams there and some drag

I also bit the bullet and forked out for a proper Storm single wiper kit. Not had a chance to look at it yet but it comes with a new linkage (for a proper sweep) and a smooth cover. Could be lighter than two wipers.

Here are also a few bits of engine bling I've bought (under protective wraps). They are an injector rail cover, brake reservoir cover and ABS box cover

I've got no plans whatsoever for the next 7 weeks, I am literally free 24/7 so I will be cracking on with this! Next up:

- New all-steel engine mount to clear the big turbo and be stronger
- Modified, strengthened, powdercoated subframe to clear FMIC pipes
- Metal water pipe for back of block
- More vinyls, new look rear end (will be nice)
- Car up and running smooth!
- MOT
- New wheels (18" in white, ordering tomorrow)

PS - Thanks to Al for the polybushes and momo boss!

Here's the subframe cut and re-welded to a new layout. We basically laid it on the bench then made a simple jig of all the pickup points before cutting and re-welding it

It's all on the car now and fitted, plus the polybushed lower arms/ARB are in (pain in the arse). The pipework now fits a treat and is overall a much better design.

I've done some more vinyls too, here is the 99% finished roof (just needs some thick pinstripe I think)

I even ran a stanley blade down the EDS sticker just for Gary and Vexorg.

I've also put a Clubcalibra sticker on the wing, where the race drivers' name normally sits. It looked bare otherwise!

That's a smudge on the camera lens, not the body! I have also started on more tailgate work (yellow panel between rear lights with race number and sponsors)

Here are my new DTM style wheels in a chavvy finish. They are the size/design I want and not too heavy as they aren't actually split rims. Not the offset I wanted though so I may get another set pending how the car drives with them on.

And trial fitted to the car

I actually have to keep them on for a while as I move house (car will be driven there) then they will come off for powdercoating gloss white as per the old wheels. I hate polished lips. Feel free to rip the sh*t out of me till I get them done white.

I've finished up some pipework on the engine and fitted the momo snap-off boss, the strut brace and a few other odds and sods.

It's now more or less ready to go for when I move in the coming weeks to this place...

I'm just waiting approval so it's not 100% sure yet, but looking very likely. It's not cheap to rent, even though I'm owed a big favour from the owner but it's a nice area and will be ideal in terms of garage space as it's one giant garage inside complete with a mini kitchen and plenty of storage room. There's room on the front for 7 cars (meet anyone?) and a dozen more on the street as there is no other houses to one side for 500 yards

In fact I am tempted to have a go at making a wide-arch kit using sheet metal, as per this car. Any ideas?

I could buy a black Calibra and go down that route over the winter. It's early days yet but that's whats on the planning board! I'd like to mess about with something a bit different (in terms of the wide body) and a different engine (saab or a v6 maybe?)

Okay just a quick update, not many pictures but some fair progress

Engine wise I've always had concerns about the oil return being too close to the exhaust housing on the turbo, and the downpipe. Here is the solution

It's £30 for a short length, but well worth it apparently as it can resist 500 degrees direct heat (touching) and 1200 degrees radiant heat. I'll secure this with metal cable ties and it should do the job

Other than that I've done virtually everything there is to do in the bay, except the gear linkage and filling the fluids :D

I've also sent a cam cover and smooth metal spark plug cover away to be painted white. Both will be plain gloss white, and I'll put a black Opel logo vinyl on the plug cover I think, something subtle

Body wise I'm having this little fellow peeping out of the back window

I have also removed the rear numberplate, to reveal quite a bit of sticky pads which I removed with a heatgun and sticky-stuff remover. This left a fairly good panel behind it, but there were a few rust bubbles arouind where the numberplate bolt passes through into the car (common spot on Calibras actually, but not usually seen). This I treated with rust treatment back to bare metal, which has now been fillered. I'll sand it flush and give it a coat of paint tomorrow hopefully.

The reason I'm doing this is for this panel, a genuine Lenk rear recess panel. This will be painted yellow (same as flashes/front bumper)

I'm contemplating filling in the Lenk logo first, opinions?

Finally, once painted yellow it will have the black number "9" applied to it (with a white outline) and then the Baumler sticker which is again black writing on a solid white background.

I think that will transform the rear-end to the race-look. I feel currently that the back end lets the car down ;)

Okay update time

I've got a new cam cover, powdercoated gloss white which I think I'll be keeping

It's had the breather mod done to the baffle plate, which was then degreased, cleaned and re-attached with threadlocked bolts

Here you can see a polished stainless injector rail cover :-)

Polished stainless ABS box cover

And a matching alloy spark plug cover, also white, with the lettering machined off. I want to get an opel decal for it (Opel + lightning logo)

I've been tidying up the wiring too, cable tying it out of the way and adding some convoluted sleeving to keep it together.

I've also stuck in a brand new rad, seeing as my last one (2nd now!?) leaked

Body wise I finally got round to drilling and riveting on the side skirts. I dont like the idea of smoothing them in or using adhesive, it's a bit girly... like sticking on some false nails. I'm also going to rivet the windows in I think

Remember the lenk rear panel? Here it is (pre-painted) with the vinyls laid out

The bodywork behind the factory rear numberplate was OK, but there was a small patch of rust around where one of the bolts passes through. This was filler'd

Primer'd

And painted

Not perfect at all, but it'll stop the rust coming back. It won't even be seen when the lenk panel is over the top.

Next the lenk panel itself was fillered to remove the embossed logo

And smoothed as best I could

It's now at the bodyshop being painted yellow to match the vinyls. I'm hoping it will transform the rear end when vinyl'd up from "poor" to "nice" as I'm not happy with it at the minute.

I have a square rear plate

Here it is with an LED light (to make it legal, I hate the thing!)

It's going to be mounted on the rear bumper, off to the right (under the rear light), to allow the lenk panel to display it's vinyls properly and look more like the race car than if I had the plate there

More coming soon guys

Right, today...

First off I painted the slam panel, just a quick rattle can because the job done before via hammerite was shockingly bad. This is a little tidier

Also note the painted chassis plate on the right :D The one on the left has been cleaned up and both riveted on using ally rivets. It's not the best job in the world but I have more important things to be doing!

Note the giant hose as well, the braided one... thats the main feed from the PAS pump to the accumulator. This has to be braided because the stock line is metal and rigid... and gets in the way of the intercooler and many other things as well.

I've got only a handful of jobs left to do now... this was one of the bigger ones here, the AFM to turbo pipework. This was quite complicated, lol. If you look here you'll see the red hose going into the turbo compressor, that is under the power steering pump and somehow needs to reach the AFM!

So it then goes into some 70mm alloy pipe (you can also see the blue pipework leaving the compressor going towards the FMIC; it was this that meant my subframe had to be modified)

The AFM pipe then comes out here, and turns 90 degrees upwards then 90 degrees backwards to bring it up to where the standard airbox sits.

I'm now just one piece short of being able to connect the AFM!

Jobs remaining:
Sort out ignition module, possibly fit an adjustable steering column
Fit prop and rear diff
Fit gearbox mount
Sort gear linkage

Right, looks like I will be making Pod next Sunday :) Touch wood.

I've wired in my slimline fan, to this switch which triggers a relay and strobes the LED. I'm really chuffed with my "advanced" electronics

Actually I'm not chuffed. I'm afraid. Like that time I tried shrooms.

Fully legitimate numberplate, forward facing. Problem officer?

I'll be getting this installed professionally, to tie in with some specialist security. It's real carbon fibre and I love it. In fact I rubbed myself on it.

More switches, this time above the windscreen. Just like a motherfucking plane! They are going to be for auxillary stuff like lighting, interior fans, instruments, ejector seat, afterburner etc, nothing urgent. It's pop riveted on using alloy rivets.

Engine wise it's all sweet. Ticks over nicely, runs up to temperature and doesn't smoke or leak (except oil return which will be sorted) Now I'm just tinkering and tidying. Here is some more bling

The gearbox mount didn't look too clever though :(

Autovaux delivered!

It's got an air filter on finally and all the cables are tidied as best I can for now.

Main thing now is to start on the 4x4, filling the TXB and adding the prop / rear diff and maybe poly bushing the rear to match the front. First off is some oil for the TXB

I'll stick the prop on during the week if I get some time / good weather, but TBH it's not essential!

Next up
- Seats back in / final adjustment on harnesses
- Painting the wheels white
- Single wiper kit
- More vinyls
- MOT / tax for Pod! :D

Stay tuned folks and see you on Sunday!

Thanks guys!

Well I've finished with the side skirts now, by riveting them into the arches to tuck the ends in flush to the body. Don't fancy losing them on the way to Pod. I've got a few more finishing touch vinyls to come for the end of the week

Next up it was Storm time! I've been putting it off for about 3 months now lol. Here's a few pics of the conversion...

And with the drivers side wiper blanked

Once it was all set up and proven to be working and not interfering with anything, I opted to park the wiper out of the way.

And fit a smooth wiper arm cover

It comes close to the sunstrip but just misses it! Bonus!

All in all, it was easier than I'd feared to fit. The instructions were fairly clear, although there was no distinction between where you stopped working on the old linkage and starting building up the new one. I didn't need any special tools or anything, just an 8mm socket, 13mm socket, circlip pliers, some grease and a grinder.

It's well worth lubricating it thoroughly

And in my scientific test with a watering can, cleared the water off the screen very well. Better than normal in fact. Any droplets you see here ran down after the wiper had passed

Today I am just refitting the seats, harnesses and mirrors ready for the MOT tomorrow! And sorting some insurance!

Good evening Calibra lovers.

Here are a few bits I've done today and in the past month.

First up was the rear suspension/brakes. They are about the only servicable chassis parts I've not yet changed/upgraded. They are also the earlier 270mm rears

For some reason the rear arms and subframe are also really rusty, having come from another car under the previous owner's modding. Shame as the rest of the car is very clean so it had to go. I also wanted to poly bush the rear end as well, given that the fronts are all polybushed. Finally, I have the 4WD to refit in the shape of the prop, diff and rear shafts and sort out the non-existent handbrake. I'll also fit some braided lines too. So one big job

Out comes the smooth black Hammerite

Spare, late rear trailing arms

All wire brushed up and given two coats of Hammerite

The old bushes were burnt / prized / hammered out, to make way for Powerflex goodness

And eccentric camber adjustable inners

And all ready to fit with new Quinton Hazel 284mm rears. I've decided on just going for quality, brand new rears with fast-road pads rather than upgraded. I don't see the point, when most of the braking is done up front (where I will be spending the money - six pots? ) and given the car is much lighter than standard there's another bonus.

And a few more goodies (shoes, pads and track rod ends)

Finished painting and left to harden

I'll be fitting all that lot in the next few days. The old stuff is already partly stripped off

I've also got an Opel vinyl for the spark plug cover, one of the last touches to the engine bay

I've sorted the oil leak on the turbo oil return, by changing it for a custom braided one. No pics of it sadly, or the gear selector cage I've painted black.

Finally I got hacked off with the noisy clunking doors and replaced the bushes and fittings on the door checks.

Now silent. Best £14 I ever spent

I've decided I want a roll cage at some point this winter. Stay tuned!
