V6 calibra intermittent managment light and cutting out
« on: February 01, 2016, 16:23:14 PM »
Hi, Hoping someone out there can help. My wife drives a 1996/P V6 3.0lt Calibra that on occasions when decelerating puts on the management light and cuts out. This can be preceded by a miss fire. Normally you can turn off and restart straight away but twice now it has taken about 5 or 6 attempts to restart. I noticed on a couple of occasions the fuel was low (above the red mark but low) She has kept a minimum of 1/3 rd in tank and the problem appeared to have stopped but has started again even straight after filling the car (so full tank of fuel)  I have driven the car on 1 occasion when it happened to me and it felt like fuel .. Can anyone tell me, is there a fuel cut off sensor on these cars that trigger when in an accident ?. If so where would I locate it. I have reasonable knowledge and competence to locate and repair but could do with some guidance from some experienced Calibra/Vauxhall mechanics who may have experience of such problems. Looking forward to any help. Thank you in anticipation of hearing from someone.

No there isn't a fuel cut off after accident, far too old for that  ;D

Is the EML on?

3.0L eh, you have that conversion done yourselves?

Hello and thank you for your response. I can cancel that sensor out then. yes the EML does come on. I have only experience it a couple of times myself (its my wife's car) on one occasion the light came on while I was driving along with some spluttering, I dipped the clutch ,allowed it to stall (light on)and bumped started it and it went out and I carried on as normal.
The conversion was done by my wife's previous partner (now deceased) and lots of work was done to the engine.
Its a  x30xe Omega engine (I think he put 2.5 cams back in), flywheel lightened + LSD fitted when gearbox was rebuilt. All the wiring is standard Calibra 2.5 that plugged in with little mods. Traction control removed. Tubular headers + stainless exhaust
Its fast but I don't like driving it. I'm not keen on FWD.
I need it to fully break before I can try to find a fault but if you or anyone else can help it would be appreciated.

You should be able to read off a fault code - if the EML comes on then hopefully it should be logged. Have you give it a try? There's a simple trick if you don't have a reader you can short the ECU plug pins and count the EML flashes http://www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_codes/fault_codes.htm

Hi Thanks The paperclip will only tell me that the crank sensor or the cam sensor or the air flow meter is at fault because that's what it reads last before it stops. I am working on taking it to have it put on a diagnostic machine but finding someone who can use one competently has proven difficult in the past. Thanks for your comment and will post the outcome as and when I have one.

Hmm well MAF sensor is a likely candidate, it can give symptoms of fueling problems. You could try to clean It and see if that helps. Remove it, clean with electronic/electrical contact cleaner spray, let it dry properly then reinstall. It's a cheap enough job to be worth a shot.

Good call and a five min job. Don't right off the paperclip test though, I have been using for best part of 15 years it must have saved me hundreds!

Rest assured, if it's re starting and running fine it's something daft.

Good evening all. I cleaned the MAF on Friday and drove it around the block and all seemed fine. My wife drove Friday eve for 20 miles and all was well. I took it out today and no problems. Thank you for you advise .All I did was to spray some throttle body cleaner on the sensor as I didn't have the correct bolt key with me to take the sensor out of the housing.I also sprayed WD40 on the electrical connection. I am shocked that such a simple fault should cause the car to cut out and basically break down. Again many thanks for the advise and will be back with any news. Thanks for taking the time to be here. all the very best to you all Best regards Ralpho

Fab news, the MAF is very important so it will cause big probs when dirty!
