Times they are a changing.
« on: August 02, 2019, 23:08:20 PM »
Hi all, o :-\

I have become saddened lately that our decent highly informative club is being wrecked by an Exodus of members preferring face book.
We also seem to be in the grip of malicious people posting links to Porn Sites.

I am no prude but please can something be done about this nasty new trend. It is also a problem with some people who post on here in their native language.  I know Cc prides itself on an open policy to members from lots of other countries............but I feel it is a bit rude to not try to get an English translation first before posting.    Even if the translations consist of broken English....this would be more fair to all.

We as members have tried carefully to stick to club rules so as not to upset other members.   I am sorry this all sounds like I am preaching but I am just pointing out some problems as I see it

Finally.......I get where members are coming from when they use " Face book " because it can be another way to spread the word about Cc and hopefully point Calibra owners who have not been aware of this great club.

I am sorry if I have trodden on too many toes.....but we shouldn't let the standard drop by being complacent if we are to carry on Cc good work.

Thank you all.

Ps My car has been scorned  at present due to being in Hospital fighting Cellulitis in my legs which turned into deadly life threatening" Sepsis" bacterial infection.   As luck was on my side and I responded to Life Saving antibiotics.    I am still slowly recovering....I also fractured my knee
when I collapsed........I do nothing by halves  Lol.      My pride and joy will soon be back on the road with me driving again......I can't wait ..

It will be the best medicine ever.

Kind regards.

Hi Turbohead

Firstly, I’m sorry to hear that you’re not well though very pleased to hear you’re on the mend - best of wishes for a full recovery.

The posts are all spam - both those foreign and those that contain links to porn and other nefarious sites.

They’re very likely being posted by spambots rather than real people. I did reach out to Alison who to my knowledge was the last remaining admin for the .com site but unfortunately she’s no longer active if I understand correctly (sorry if I got that wrong).

She did ping the site owner to ask if something could be done but given the lack of pruning of the posts or removal of the fake accounts posting them I’m not sure anything has happened yet - and perhaps it won’t.

I’m actually an admin and site maintainer for the .net site  and the VBOA club - have to say that we also see low activity on the site compared with former years. Largely Facebook and the like have overtaken the traditional forums (or BBS as they were known when the internet was formed!) but I and others like you continue to visit the forums to keep them alive. I think the largest challenge ever is that the number of owners is now at an all time low...

Anyhow, take care and get well soon.

Andrew

Hi Andrew

Thank You for your kind words.......much appreciated.   Yes I feel much better and my legs are healing fine.   The problems that are happening to this Club are I suppose a sign of the times.   Nothing can be kept sterile so to speak but I still feel saddened.

Just my observation and I stand to be proven wrong but this change in posting seem to have started when  Cc members moved over to Facebook.
Perhaps it would be reassuring for all members could confirm their desire to keep Cc active and not allow the rot to set in.

Fineally nobody is criticising members from having more involvement with Facebook but it woul be nice for us if they flip flopped back and forth and to carry on contributing with as much Calibra content etc that they can.

To Qoute a common phrase .............." When it's gone..........it's gone"

Kind regards

Rod.

Hi

I have deleted hundreds of these posts in the past month, but they keep coming back. It has now become a pointless task and there's not a lot that can be done to stop it.  One deleted post turns into 20 more the following day - I don't have time to deal with them.

As for this site, I think it is fair to say that it has been dead for a long time now. I am actually surprised that Ash is still paying for it to be hosted.  There are many reasons for this over the past few years, the first big drop was when many of the regulars left the site a few years ago when someone within this site started a huge argument with others, and they all left to start up their own site.  Hundreds of daily posts turned into a few here and there. A massive disappointment considering at one point there were hundreds of active members online at the same time.  Of course, the demise of Calibra ownership and rise of social media has put sites like this to rest so to speak, even the biggest clubs/ forums have been struggling. However in regards to Facebook, I have to say it isn't really looking too popular over there.

Anyway, with one or two posts a week other than Bot Spam, I am afraid to say that this site is officially dead. Of course, if a new Calibra is ever built, interest may increase again and the site may once again flourish, but that is unlikely. Apologies for saying this, but I think you probably knew this already.

Regards.

Hi!

Appreciate your reply, and the points you make. I do hope Ash continues to keep it running because despite there not being many newer posts, there’s a treasure trove of knowledge and information from the past. Losing that would be a huge blow to the remaining community, myself included. It would be good if at all possible that in the event Ash considers no longer funding the site, he let me know because I’d be happy to take it over including the cost to insure against its loss.

Re the fake profiles - in the end the only way I found to keep them out was to have email confirmation for new accounts enabled and admin review (meaning an admin needs to enable the account before it can be used).

Thanks again,
Andrew

Hi ings...Hi Andrew  :)

Thank You ings for explaining the sad decline of Cc and Thank You also for your efforts to sort some of the problems out.....well done.

Andrew it was very generous of you to offer throw out a lifeline to Ash and for the continuation of Cc. You would make an ideal candidate and let's hope that Ash lets us know what he intends to do going forward.

I wil keep my fingers crossed.  Can we arrange a vote of club loyalty by any members past and present voicing there  intentions about their membership plans also. I suppose I am really asking for a Head Count so to speak.."....that would lift spirits and lift Cc out of the doldrums. I like to think that Cc is not quite dead.....and that we could bounce back.

Could we perhaps post our intentions on.....Facebook to try to encourage members to get more involved again.   Finally  the Calibra will soon enter the realms of Classic Car Status.....with no Road Tax. So this iwill also become an interesting talking point when that happens.

Kind regards to all

Turbohead.
