Front Bank Rocker Cover was loose...
« on: November 10, 2011, 18:30:03 PM »
Well I was painting my rocker cover on the car earlier as its my day off... and I fancied turning one of the torx bolts by hand for some reason... And it undone with my hand..  :o

Turns out they were all like it on the front bank IIRC! Now I dont know why either... Anyway since the conversion last week I've been thinking to myself... "People always say the F28 conversion completely changes the car" ... And I just wasnt getting it. It felt like it was holding back and It kind of felt like it used to or worse.

After tightening those up I drove it home and Bugger me! Its completely changed the power in it and its ALOT quicker than before. In third gear she had me say out loud to myself "f*ck me!" LOL.

I'm guessing the head/pistons werent compressing properly with the loose rocker cover. Luckily it wasnt leaking oil and no damage caused

Just been thinking now! and searching the net! My claims in the first post are soley due to the fact that I've not done anything to the car today so I assumed that would be the reason And then on a phonecall to my brother he said... Maybe the engine wouldnt compress nicely?

Does that even effect compression? I'm not up on Engines that well TBH!

Anyone know? ?

The rocker cover wont affect compression As the valves and head gasket are between the chambers and the rocker covers.

Its seriously up'd its game. Its like driving a totally different car and it also seems smoother.

Sorry ray but tightening the cam cover bolts will make no difference to compression. Put it this way if it was not leaking oil then it will not of been leaking air ;) it must have a lot of sealer gluing it down. The torque on these bolts is next to nothing.

There must be something else you've done if you genuinely think its quicker ???

Worth checking the rear cam cover as well then!
Is the inlet manifold tightened up?

Camcovers have no affect on the performance, especially if it's not leaking.

Now a loose inlet manifold would have an affect on proformance but not cam covers.

Wierd guys because its quicker and loads more torque! I have no explanations!

Well much to my surprise my mate say's yes it could be the reason for the cars better performance  :o

He say's his w*nker mobile (AKA BMW) is noticeably different if he doesn't put the oil cap on right?!

An this adds to the confusions. Does it, does it not? Shall I do a comparison tomorrow? The car has gained alot of power over an afternoon.

Nothing else. Not touched anything else on it mate. It is very noticabilly quicker!

So much that I just took my mate out as passenger and said to him "somethings happened to my car today" .. so I didnt let on to what, if anything I made it sound bad, and he noticed straight away.

Just did a traffic light start with my mate in his Astra VXR (in eco mode which he says is about 230-240) and we were neck to neck and both spinning abit until mid third... he span more but still! lol...

Im very confused by all this TBH..

Only way I can satisfy it is loosening them how they were and testing. If the same then something happened today that I wasnt envolved in

If I was you I'd be checking everything is torqued up and not just hand tight or things are going to start falling off.
If it won't go into gear properly check and see if you still have a gearbox ;)

We didnt touch the engine, cambelt, gaskets etc during the conversion, just checked and all was in order.

The rest is torqued up properly dont worry lol, that includes subframe, flywheel, gearbox etc.
