F28 into V6 What mounts?
« on: October 31, 2011, 10:41:11 AM »
i know you can use the f25 mount for the gearbox and there is a hole on the box that needs tapped out.  But i have heard that some people experience problems and break mounts.  I'll assume if i getan F28 mount it i'll be a direct fit and there'll be no problems??  or would this problem only arise form the engine not being spaced correctly.

Many thanks conal nugent

F25.

I'm pretty sure you can use your original mount mate. I've used the one that came with my F28 tho. Its the same design as the F28 rubber mount I think. Are you going to have a torsion bar on the V6 too?

Isn't the V6 engine block is slightly shorter than the 2.0L engines, because it only has 3 cylinders in a line on either side instead of 4?  So I thought the F28/6 is slightly shorter to accommodate the slightly longer block on the 2.0L engine.  Can the F28/6 and F25 really still use all the same mounts?

Yes j@z your right.  The engine needed moved towards the f28 by 23mm by using a spacer on the driveshaft bracket (the one from the engine) and spacers in the drive side engine mount.

What most people do is use existing f25 gearbox mount and tap out one bolt hole on the f28 to suit the mount.  This is why I'm wondering has anyone used an f28 gearbox mount?? Like one of the fancy german stiff toughened jobbies

So it's effectively the engine mount that has to change, rather than the gearbox mount.  I guess the spacers mean that the moment (load x distance) the engine applies to the mountings is greater.  Does this and the joint between the spacer and the drive-side mounts mean that the engine can move slightly more?

I assume the "stiff toughened" mounts are designed to compensate for the greater moment referred to above.

the standard procedure is to do the above mentioned method, use spacer on drive shaft, drill out and tap bolt hole on f28 and then split and space the driver side engine mount.  I'd heard through a few threads people saying they were going through engine mounts like mad (not sure which one) but i can only assume this is down to the job of spacing not being done right either the shaft spacer wrong size or the drivers side mount not being spaced right or a combo of both.

Anyway, here is an example of the type of mounts i was on about

I guess that it could either be because the spacing is wrong, putting excessive stresses on the engine mount, or because the engine does move around more and this causes premature failure.

well i think best course of action is to use f25 mount and see how it goes.  If there are any issues i'll fabricate something similar to the above mount

Yes mate, its on the road now too! F28, 3.0ltr V6. I used phils Box and linkage mate, It was all made up all I did was bolt it to the box and shaft then two drill bits and it was done withing afew minutes.

If you look on Phils project thread you will see how he's done it.

Also I believe the problems you've read about, about mounts breaking is on conversions in other cars not Cavs/Callys where you have a solid bracket on the back of the F28 that fits to the mount direct. People usually snap these brackets when they are attached to the side of the box. The F25 rubber is as good as others Imo, just make sure its new when it goes in and don't rag the tits off it lol.

Do what I'm doing. Get the torque mount spot welded to the strut if it isnt there from factory and then that will reduce the strain on the rear mount.
