EM light now lit
« on: November 23, 2011, 19:39:53 PM »
Hi All just a quick question (i hope its a quick answer ? )
Past couple of days my EM light has come on upon starting and remains on i noticed when changing gear it tends to seem to gasp for breath, but if i stop after a few miles and restart light goes off & engine seems fine, i dont think my cally likes the cold (who does ? ) Past few mornings been very cold out aprox 3 - 4 degrees

Cheers for any advice

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

As above mate, the self diagnostic (paper clip) test is you best friend when you own a cally :) it will give you a fault code then you can look on the list a see what's causing the light.

Decided to give my cally a treat going for a full service tomorrow as they give it an engine tune too via the diagnostics & i thought as winter is coming a fresh lot of oil ect will do it good.   :)

Have you done the paperclip test yet? If a sensor has failed a service won't fix the problem.

so your going to pay someone to do what you could have gone outside and done in about 6 and a half min!(diagnostics) they cant tune the car with it! that will be a extra bill, after they undo a nut let the oil out and pour new in the top and charge you ?40 a hr to do it!

hope it sorts it for you  :)

I agree it may need a service BUT needing a service will not bring the eml on, if the eml is on a general service will not make it go out.

What does the garage mean by an engine tune via the diagnostic? I.have a feeling there going to rip you off! Have you had a price for said service and tune up?

The self diagnostic literally takes minutes to do at home with only a paper clip and your ability to count and it could save you a lot of money.

I might have worded the engine tune via diagnostics they put the diagnostic machine on & they also tune up the engine as well sorry for any confusion,
But yes i do know what you mean too.

And how are they going to tune the engine then  ?

Bolt on a turbo  ?

Engine tune is mechanic "talk"  for service.

They might be able to adjust the timing if it's a bit out but I don't see what a 'tune' could involve as everything else is controlled via the ECU.
Sounds like a load of expensive bollocks to me

Could very well be me just wasting money but as i would find it difficult myself to do the work as im registered disabled and even doing basic mechanics i would find it hard.

That's understandable mate. On here we hate to see people get ripped off by garages when 9 times out of 10 we can come up with a solution on here that will cost a lot less than a garage will charge.

Ask the garage what the fault code was that was causing the eml light and let us know what they say also tell them to ring you if the price go's above the ?99 before they do the work as some garages magicaly find faults while doing a routine service.

We don't like to see people get ripped off, this is why all the above questions were asked.

Let us know what they say.

I know what you mean guys always looking out for each other thats why i like it  on here no-one wants to be ripped off but i know the garage and its a decent one been around for years always a waiting list to get in there.

So as soon as i find out the code i'll let you guys know for any tips and hints as i said i think mine has a dislike of the colder weather ha ha.
