car won't start!
« on: December 31, 2011, 09:21:49 AM »
Stayed at the inlaws for Xmas and move the car on the 27th morning about 10 yards and it started fine. Went to leave on the 28th and It wouldnt start it just turns over with out fireing. Thought it may be the battery as its passed its best really and thought I may have blown a cell. Put a new battery on and still no joy! Have done the paper clip test for the 1st time ever as the eml light won't go out while trying to start it but I get no reading back ???. Theres fuel in the rail and the plugs look ok. Anyone got any other ideas please?

My red top Kadett is in the same state right now! Just driving along, and suddenly - no firing! The first thing I want to check is that there is no dirt in the pickup which reads the timing from the flywheel. If the sensor there does not see the timing marks, the ECU will not know when to fire the system.
From looking at the system, it seems to me the electronic part most likely to fail is the amplifier at the coil.
To put the GM system into perspective - I have used this car for twenty years, no problems! It has 360,000 km ( about 225,000 mies on it). It has the red top exactly as the 2 lit 16v calibra. It is a luxury CD, which was supplied with sound system, full leather, p/s, e/w, etc. All still 100%. The fact that I know nothing about the electronics speaks volumes, as I am a r&d development engineer on automotive systems.
I also drive a calibra 4x4 - same engine. I collect Volvos (122S & 544), and rate my Opels as legendary, right alongside the old Volvos, many of which have never neen overhauled, and run 100%.

Cheers

Depends, some cut ignition system dead, some cut fuel pump etc but saying that there is fuel at the rail ???

Crank sensor?

Looks like Its was over fueling on start up so will have to keep an eye on it. Got it sorted by removing the fuse to the fuel pump and dry starting it a couple of times to dry It out. I put the fuse back In and the same happened so out came the fuse again and she started but only ran for a second or 2. Fuse back In still nothing as Its pumping 2 much In so took the fuse out and started her again dry but as she fired up on what was already In the cylinders I put the fuse back in quickly and gave her some revs and she's still running now. Strange really never had that befor and I'm still puzzled over the while paperclip test.
