A soury burning smell??   if its inside the car three things spring to mind,

1) Burning electrical insulation.  could be a shorted wire. Is there any smoke??
2) Do you have air con?? Poorly maintained air con can make horrible smells.
3) Somethings been spilt in the car. Have heard some horror stories about car sellers pouring milk into vents to p**s people off.

Hope its not too bad you will have to smiff your car to find out the area that is the strongest smelling.  Good luck and get sniffing  ;D

Could be the heater matrix begining to leak. Screen wash often stinks something horrible if its been in the tank for a long time, obviously you notice it when you operate the washers.
ALARMED!....You will be, this car is owned by the most hairy arsed b*stard of the worst kind.
