mot MAJOR FAIL
« on: April 03, 2014, 13:17:28 PM »
GUy said it was the rear brakes where locking up to easily, he said the foot brake squeezes the rear pads and that the handbrake affects the rear brakes in a different way and that it needs adjusted to stop it locking up so easily which is why he said theres a loud thump when ever the hbraks pulled..... >:(
So im wandering if this is true and how do i adjust the rear handbrake brakes

Huh? How would the handbrake cause the rear to lock up then?

The handbrake has shoes, the rear brakes have discs amd pads. What he said, or how you've worded it makes no sense.

Do they lock up when you apply the foot brake?

The handbrake can be adjusted by the 'cogs' on each side at the rear turning the cogs with a screw driver will adjust the shoes, or you can adjust the handbrake cable from under the car if needed.

Do a search on here chap, bound to be a thread or several on it :)

Also as a quick test i'd get the car on flat ground let off the handbrake so the car can roll free then pull up the handbrake click by click to see where the bite is, maybe the car failed because theres not sufficient travel on the handbrake, mine starts to bind about 3 clicks up...

I know you can fail a mot on short handbrake travel as i had to adjust a car a few years ago that failed on the handbrake travel.

MOT tester sounds like a dick! Why would he pull on it with two hands until it broke?? He should of pulled it up normally then failed it on handbrake efficiency.

Sounds to me like it's dislodged the handbrake shoes and maybe ripped the holding pins out of the back plate. You're going to have to strip each side and re fit the handbrake assembly to see what's happened.

The handbrake is a drum assembly inside the rear disk that expands brake shoes via a cable, the shoes are spring loaded and held in place with two quarter turn pins that go through the shoe and backplate then quarter turn to hold in place, a new fitting kit is cheap and comes with springs and pins but the problem is the back plates themselves as they corrode and the holes for the pins pull through causing what sounds like your problem.

The back plates are like rocking horse sh*t new so good luck finding some if the holes have corroded as I have the same issue with mine.

The hand brake and the foot brakes are not related in the way they are applied apart from they use the same disk but in different ways, the rear brake calipers do not engage with the handbrake.

Totally agree with Butcher. My drums/shoes needed replacing shortly after purchase. I suspect that the previous owner had a habit of yanking on the hand brake before the car came to a halt. It is very much a "parking" brake to be used for slowing the car only in emergencies!

This sounds quite minor to me. Why do some people shriek with fright when they hear 'brake issue'?

Adjusting the handbrake is quick & easy, especially in a well-equipped workshop.
I am sure many garages add this as an MOT fail so they can charge an extra £100 for 20 minutes work.

Taking the Haynes to bed is a bit geeky, Dan but RTFM can often save lots of time & money.

Your back plates are obviously in good condition, if you'd seen and tried to adjust mine you'd realise the handbrakes on calibra's are a sh*te set up and now the back plates are no longer available once three gone you have a big problem.

Has anyone tried autovaux for these backing plates? my last phone call with them said that they had them, brought in from a different supplier. the only reason i know is i was enquiring about the rear drop link bushes

Yes they have & apparently there's no more.

Worth searching for Carlton, Cavalier 3 & Astra 3 though cos they're all the same.

Where you been??

I'm always around. Don't tend to post much unless there's anything of interest going on around here.

Hasn't been much of that here in a while so I just sit in the background until something catches my eye. :)
