Seems this week there are loads of c20let blocks, cranks, conrods with pistons going cheap (ish) great if your rebuilding a standard engine making it a bit tougher. I won´t be bidding as the Mrs is scanning the account every day after a bit of a splurge recently.

I grabbed a 20E cylinder head last week as I want to rebuild it first before swapping it on my daily driver C20NE 8V Calibra. Don´t want to take the head off, clean it then know I should replace the valve guides, bed in the valves etc. Just want to swap them over fast and use the car the same day.

Every engine I have had gets coked up and has valve and head gasket issues around 90,000 so I am putting the mileage clock back to zero by doing this now. When I did the timing belt I replaced the rocker gasket which looked original (and leaking), took the chance to once over the camshaft.  The lobes looked in good condition and a screwdriver stethoscope test on the rocker cover with engine ticking over was quiet but a bit lumpy - maybe the valves not seating the best.

The 20E head is off a GTE Astra and is supposedly an upgrade to the NE, may have to match the inlet ports to the manifold unless anyone knows different? :-\

I fully agree about coking up and regarding the lumpy running you mention.  It's mainly caused by piston ring blow by...or leaking valve stem seals. The valve guides are prety tough and as long as there is minimal or no side play ..no worries.

It is well worth cleaning the hydrolic lifters as they can get gummed up...effecting the smooth running.   There is a How to thread on this very job on Cc.....it is the piston inside the lifters that is the culprit...but very easy to clean.

Back to de -coking have you ever heard of or used a product called ....."10 K" ??.... it was developed for ships engines when at see for a long time between servicing.....and has proved very good for car engines etc..........not cheap but well worth it.

You spray it into the air intake with engine running.......you will think nothing is happening but suddenly large clouds of smoke comes out of the exhaust and burns away all the built up carbon.......it really does work. As you know thick carbon build up on the piston crowns absorbs the fuel mist like blotting paper  and gives you less bang for your bucks.
