It's a good idea to have bonnet vents to let heat out of the engine bay, particularly on the V6 and Turbo which get very hot under the bonnet.  The neatest vent I have seen on a Calibra was a Mercedes bonnet vent that ran right across the rear of the bonnet, nearly the full width and fitted flush with the bonnet top.

To be honest J@z as you know I have Astra GTE vents on mine, fully cut in & the soundproofing underneath also cut, I've noticed absolutely no difference in cooling.

Aesthetically on the other hand, a subtle pair of vents can be quite pleasing on the eye.

Dan,

Could you upload some photos inside of the bonnet? I would like to see how do you welded the GTE vents frame. Thx.

I suspect that the vents would need to be significantly larger to have an appreciable effect.  Ideally they should also be as high and as far back as possible, to help heat to escape.  That's another reason why I like the Merc vent.

I agree and I think that the GTE vents look very neat.  Though I think that they'd be even better if they were actually flush with the surface of the bonnet.  The Merc vent I saw was absolutely flush with the surface, without any rim, exactly as on a Merc bonnet.

If you use the original mounting frame cut from the Astra GTE bonnet they will be flush.
I haven't seen the Merc one - pic anyone?

The Merc vent sounds interesting.....the way i see it is.....it all depends on the vent and how and where you fit it and wich direction they face....some vents like the R19 could be fitted in the normal way to `scoop` air in....or fitted back to front so the air comes in the front bumper....over the engine and out venturi style....?

I didn't use the frame from the GTE bonnet, not much point IMO.

They are bonded in with a sh*t load of Tiger Seal!

Vents don't really work as scoops, they work in completely different ways.

The idea of scoops is to 'scoop' (see what they did there) cold air into the engine bay to cool it down.

The idea of vents is that as the air above the vent passes over, it pulls the warm air out with it.

Both cool the engine bay but in different ways. See how the vents on Dan's bonnet are pointing towards the rear of the car? That's so the warm air goes that way too, same direction as the air passing over the bonnet.

Both scoops and vents cool the engine bay, but in different ways. :)

I wish I had.  It was on a (Magnetic?) Blue Calibra (with white leather interior?) on the ClubCalibra stand at a show a few years ago.  You can see the style of vent on many Merc models.  It runs almost the full width across the rear of the bonnet.  I'm not certain ,but I think that some have slots running front-back, while others have groups of slots running right-left, rather than 'louvres' running right-left.

Gavs explanation is absolutely right.  A 'scoop' usually has a 'ram-air' effect, like an opening that faces into the oncoming air and literally 'scoops' air into the engine bay - either to feed the air intake (as on many American muscle cars), or to cool the engine bay.  Since hot air naturally rises, a vent in the bonnet simply allows hot air to escape from the engine bay, this process can be enhanced by the effect of air passing over the bonnet pulling hot air up out of the engine bay.  Allowing air to escape from the engine bay may also lower the air pressure in the engine bay, allowing air to pass through the radiator and (on a turbo) the intercooler more easily.
