Could be a number of things, and primarily depends on your ISP - each ISP has a contention ratio which is basically the number of users per 'Hub' sat within your ISP's building - BT's contention is general 50:1 for home users and so if the rest of those 49 users are downloading movies, you'll suffer slightly!!BT suffered a major node failure last week causing disruption for BT users accessing Pipex/Host Europe servers, such down times affect DNS servers all over the world and has a knock on effect to other ISPs that weren't initially affected!

Quotethe service I subscribe to has a contention ratio of 20:1, so the problem shouldn't be traffic through my ISP.Not necessarily, 20:1 is normally given to a business package and your average business are infact generally using more bandwidth than a home user on a 50:1 contention, therefore you would actually come off worse.In other words, your 50 home users are very rarely going to be utilising a connection 24/7, a business how would generally ALL be online simultaneously.
