As you may have noticed, ClubCalibra was unavailable for 30 minutes this afternoon. During that time, the forum was cleansed of old redundant posts, settings tweaked to optimise forum performance, modifications that were not used removed.

We have also made some changes that affect you in the following way...

- Topic/PM Notification Emails will no longer contain text from the reply
- New attachments are no longer permitted - you must use PhotoBucket or similar
- Now Playing modification removed (it was pointless)
- Profile Custom Settings reset to defaults, please tweak these to a minimum
- Certain old boards removed that had minimal activity
- Classifieds section truncated to recent posts only

These changes have been made due to our rapidly growing scale, and so as to keep the server running in tiptop condition! Things will be grinding for a while whilst we adjust the dedicated server settings accordingly, please be patient during this time.

Finally, I have a recommendation to improve performance, FireFox renders ClubCalibra.com at an exceptionally higher pace than Internet Explorer - give it a try, you can download Firefox here:

http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

Please discuss any confusion below.

- New attachments are no longer permitted - you must use PhotoBucket

Good shout. As well as taking up space, i think this will generally improve performance, and it also looks neater.

Although you probably should have said "must use Photobucket....or some other image hosting service" as no doubt some will take that statement literally ;D

Personally my only other bugbear that i find annoying, is not being able to go back and edit posts at a later point in time (or at least later than the 5 minute timeout...or however long it is). I think the value in being able to go back and modify/correct/withdraw/add content to posts far outweighs any concern over anyone making changes that might confuse members later down the line.

What does anyone else think?

Perhaps a vote could be setup to gauge opinion on this, or maybe even have a trial period perhaps??

I also like the modifying posts ability. Maybe to stop confusion, instead of changing the original post, extra info could be added which is clearly visible i.e a different colour. That way you could add the extra info you wish without confusing anyone who has already read the post :)

Storm, the advantage of the inability to edit posts is that it makes members think twice before posting. It also prevents trigger happiness in saying something that you may later regret.

In a sense, it prompts users to consider the content of their post, prior to posting it!

Taking away the modifying option will only increase the overall post count as members will have to post another comment to correct the first if a mistake was made.

That wasn't a moan, it personally doesn't bother me.

But you have 5 minutes in which to reread and correct your post, how could you need any more time? Removing it also allows people to retract something they have written, which then makes every subsequent post illogical.

Pros:

Posts always make sense

Cons:

People change opinion
People update posts (selling, register/list)
Incorrect advice corrected

etc..

I find it to be highly annoying when I come back to a post I want to edit after the grace period has passed.
I edit very rarely, however when I do, I want to be able to.
JB as a mod would destroy cc.com from the inside  :P Like a forum version of Alien  :D

Storm, the advantage of the inability to edit posts is that it makes members think twice before posting.

Think twice about what though? Are you referring to people thinking twice about making offensive comments? If so, how many members are we talking about here? A handful. In fact probably the same number that don't care about the modify limit, and will say what they want to say anyway. If anything, extending the modify time, or removing it altogether provides the option for people to retract those comments when they have calmed down.

Also what about the disadvantages of not being able to go back and edit posts? For example i've had numerous occasions where i have later realised i have supplied the wrong url, wrong image, made spelling mistakes, or factual errors or just wanted to add to the original post. Often updating the original post is better than posting an update or correction 10 pages in where no one will see it. I don't do it a lot (obviously ;) ), but when I do, i find it frustrating that i can't go back and correct/amend it.

How many times have you as Admin gone back and corrected a post, because you realised afterwards you'd made a mistake? I won't believe you if you say never lol ;) Obviously the time out limit doesn't apply to you, but imagine if it did, it would be a pain wouldn't it?

It also prevents trigger happiness in saying something that you may later regret

Does it? I'm not convinced on that ;). The key point of "trigger happiness" is in the description itself. Those who are likely to make those types of posts are likely to do so on the spur of the moment, and regardless of the modify settings. In this example, those who may later regret what they said, can go back and remove that comment anyway (if there were no modify limits), whereas currently they can't after 5 minutes has passed. Again, how many people are we talking about here? Probably a small minority.

I agree partly with your point about removed content possibly affecting subsequent posts, but being a member of other forums where this time out isn't set, this really only happens on the odd occasion and its not really a problem. It certainly doesn't affect *every* subsequent post, as its unlikely every subsequent post will refer to the text that was removed.

I understand where you're coming from, but the examples of the advantages you gave only apply to a small minority of members that *might* cause a problem. Whereas the disadvantages of having the limit set affect ALL members. There are many genuine reasons for wanting to go back and amend a post, and in my opinion it will contribute towards improving the overall content (and accuracy of it) and general user experience on the site.

PS: In all the changes made today, i've lost me google maps award  :'(  :'(

Don't forget if you'd like a post modifying you can always PM a Moderator. I tend to agree that the 5 minute timeout is sufficient

^^^^I agree with this, the site would end up a right hotch potch otherwise because unfortunately the people who don't use a Modify Post facilty correctly would make it unworkable

Niether do I.

Modifying posts is not always about backtracking a statement, it can be about spotting a mistake in spelling or punctuation that we wish to correct. Yes, the spell checker is available but in many instances the speed of reply is paramount vs the time wasted to check it over first.

There are a lot of forums out there that don't have a time limit and they work just fine.

Neither do I.
Nor I.

As I suspect is the case for most,  Clubcalibra is typically a secondary reason for being online so quickfire, distracted posts are the norm thus the  15 minute time limit is far more user friendly in terms of quality checking your post.

FF renders javascript much better than IE particularly if said javascript is written 1990s style ( try an ajax style forum that uses a jquery, moo type framework) or is poorly written ( snow anyone?). Browser memory issues aside, slow content delivery is generally a serverside problem.

I sometimes like to check my facts before correcting a post.  It's very annoying to check something, only to find that it is too late to modify.

Also, like many people, I tend to have the forum running in the background, while I am doing other things.  With a short time limit it is often too long and even sensible modifications are disallowed.

Finally, if people think better of what they have posted after writing something provocative, or offensive, isn't it better to allow them to retract it, without starting an unnecessary row?

Right...I have up'ed the edit time to 20 minutes. I believe that it is an acceptable amount of time to permit an edit.

The site appears to lock up now and then some times takes 5min's to load a thread.

Thanks for listening Ash.

Still prefer no limit haha, but 20 is a helluva lot better than 5 :)
