Announcement: Vauxhall Lifts Lid On Shock New Cabrio!
« on: March 10, 2011, 21:07:33 PM »
This article was just published by Auto Express:

Quote
The attached image show the look of Vauxhall's new four-seater convertible, which bosses have just green lit for production.

Vauxhall's CEO Nick Reilly told Auto Express at the Geneva Motor Show: "A number of models were put on hold as a result of the recession ? the Astra GTC three-door coup was delayed, for instance. But we will build a new convertible that will provide a 'halo' effect for the range."

He continued: "It is two years away from launch, and will be a separate model. It will share some Astra components, but it will not be called Astra - in fact, we may use a name from our past. It will sit above the GTC." Asked about the name, Reilly said: "Calibra
is possible, as well as Manta."

But what should Vauxhall's new canvas-topped cabrio be called? Vote in our poll on the top right of this page.

Calibra
If you were in the market for a good-looking but affordable coupe in the late Eighties and Nineties, chances are the Calibra was near the top of your list. The sleek three-door had a huge fan base, and 250,000 were sold around the world, badged as Opels, Vauxhalls, Chevrolets and Holdens, before it was axed in 1997 - eight years after launch.

Manta
When the first-generation Manta appeared in 1970, it was the Ford Capri's worst nightmare. With its simple flowing design and rear-wheel-drive layout, it was an instant hit. At the 1975 launch of the second-generation car, two versions were available - the sporty Opel Manta or the more sedately styled Vauxhall Cavalier.

Is this the car which is pretty much an Insignia coupe? I heard they will be calling that a 'Calibra'.

Well, we're unsure and can only go from media reports at the moment - I guess we'll see!

Welcome to the Club Ripper, where did you find us?

Hopefully if they do use the Calibra name, they'll do it justice. VW did it with Scirocco, brung it back years later and nailed it.

Thankyou :) I found you by mistake actually, I'm looking to buy a Calibra in August as i'm 'out of my time' in my apprenticeship and will be enjoying a 'hearty' payrise. I found you on google, first link ;)

why all the excitement by the forum management even if they do call this a calibra? It won't bring in thousands of new members, infact a calibra mk2 forum is bound to be set up surely?

If that is badged as a calibra it will be the best way to lower an already low opinion by most on the calibra anyway.

Ask any genuine Mini or Beetle fan what they think of the new versions? I'd bet most would say they are shite.

Thats a very good point mate, both of the new versions are hairdresser's cars and have nothing much in common with the originals, the Mini especially. How many blonde bimbo's would jump in an original, British made, Mini and think it was great. Not one i bet

Agreed Angus, I'm not a fan of mini's or beetles but I respect the originality and querkiness of them both, the newer models were just bigger, fatter and vaguely resembled the icon they were copying.

Some cars from the 80's and 90's should just be left alone and be remembered for the classic motors they were rather than have some joke of a new model ruining the status of the older variant.

No doubt some of the newer variants of old models are good cars, just give them another bloody name, it's not like there's a lack of them out there ::)

On the vauxhall scene alone, they should leave novas, calibras, cavaliers, mantas etc as models that were legendary back in their day that are not to be resurrected otherwise you'll end up with a new calibra that bares as much resemblance to the old as the vectra does to the insignia :-\

well i voted calibra, although it looks a little box like to be a calibra....oh and the fact it doesnt have a roof means it shares nothing at all with the calibra.

but it would be nice to see the name on a up to date car, just a shame it could be this one :(
